Introduction This is the first publication of Water Statistics, published by the Kosovo Agency of Statistics. This publication aims to inform about comprehensive statistical water resources in Kosovo. This modest publication aims to contribute to creating a sustainable information on the state of water in Kosovo. The publication is based on Law on Official Statistics No. 04/L-036, the Law on Waters of Kosovo No.04/L-143, 2013, and Eurostat Questionnaire (The joint questionnaire / Inland waters / JQIW 2014). KAS thanks to institutions for cooperation concerned with monitoring and management of waters in Kosovo, such as: Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, Regulatory Office of Waters in Kosovo, Hydrometeorology Institute, Hydro-economic Enterprise "Iber Lepenci", NewCo Ferronikeli Complex LLC, KEDS, SharrCem SH.PK Plant in Skenderaj. Interpretations expressed in this publication are entirely those of the authors and should not be attributed in any way to KAS or any other institution. Suggestions, proposals and remarks for this publication are welcome and will help us to be more effective to users. This publication was prepared by the staff of the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Statistics in KAS: Bajrush Qevani Director, DAES MA.sc.Haki Kurti, Head, DAES Teuta Ademi, Officer, DAES March, 2016 Chief Executive Officer, KAS Isa Krasniqi

1. General information on Kosovo Kosovo territory is km2, Kosovo has continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. It is densely populated with about 193 people per km2, and divided into 38 municipalities. The capital of Kosovo is Pristina. Kosovo has a central geographical position in the Balkan Peninsula and lies between 41 50'58 "and 43 51'42" of northern latitude and 20 01'30" and 21 48'02" of eastern longitude. Key local factors that influence Kosovo's climate are relieve, waters, soil and plants. In Kosovo are present all forms of precipitation. The most important falls are in the form of heavy rain in the valleys and in the form of snow in the mountains. Kosovo has an average of 160 rainy days per year. Municipality of Prishtina is 572 km² and lies in northwestern Kosovo. 9 Table 1 shows that in 2009 the maximum temperature in August was 28.6 C, in August 2010 was 30.4 C, in August 2011 was 30.4 C, in August 2012 was 31.8 C, while the minimum temperature was in January C, in February 2010, 1.1 C, in February C, and in February C. In February 2010, the number of monthly rainy days was 19 days and in December 2010 was 20 days. The distribution of rainfall in terms of time and water use have huge difference within the territory of Kosovo and the lack of water is much greater in the eastern than in the western part of the country. Kosovo can be divided into three climatic zones (see Table 3). On average, Kosovo receives rainfall of about 760 mm per year. 7

1. Social and Economic Indicators Resident population 1 in Kosovo in 2011 was residents. According to estimates made in 2014 it appears that Kosovo has 1,844,553 inhabitants. While estimates for 1991, 2012 to 2014 are based on the statistical methods used for estimates, forecasts and projections (Tab.4). Table 4: Total population in Kosovo, Source: KAS Year No. of population Source of data Census Census Census Census Estimation Census Estimation Estimation Estimation Table 4 shows the population censuses for the years 1948 to 2011 and estimates made by the years 1991 and Based on published data Kosovo has a relatively 'new' population with 28% of the population under age 15, and by age 15 to 54 years, 58.4% of the population. 1 KAS final data from the Population, Households and Dwellings Census in Kosovo Total Kosovo; In the Census of 2011 are not included data for municipalities; Zvecan, Zubin Potok, Leposavic and part of Mitrovica. 9

2. Ponds in Kosovo Water is an important natural resource and as such has indispensable role for the life of living beings on earth, indispensable resource for economic development of the country, plays crucial roles in regulating climate, therefore the management and conservation of water resources, ecosystems of fresh water, of drinking water, is vital for the country. Most of Kosovo's water resources originate in the country, with the exception of the upper part of the River Ibri, which originates in Montenegro and flows into Lake Ujmani. Hydrography of water flows of Kosovo is divided in 4 river ponds: the White Drini (Drini i Bardhë), Ibri, Morava e Binçës, and Lepenci (see Tab.5). The main rivers that belong to the Black Sea pond are: Ibri, Sitnica with branches; (Llapi, Drenica), and the Morava e Binçës. To Adriatic Sea belong: Drini i Bardhë with its branches (Lumëbardh, Lumëbardhi Deçan, Lumëbardhi Prizren, River of Klina, Ereniku, Mirusha, Toplluha and Plava). Lepenci River with the main branch (bifurcation) belong to the Aegean Sea. 10

Kosovo Agency of Statistics, a brief description Kosovo Agency of Statistics is a professional institution which deals with collection, processing and publication of official statistical data. As such acts since 1948 and has passed through several historical stages, structured according to state regulation of those times. On 2 August 1999, the Agency has resumed his professional work (after nine years of interruption of all statistical series detrimental to the interest of Kosovo), as an independent institution under the Ministry of Public Administration. Since the Agency operates in the frames of the Prime Minister s Office. Office is funded by the Kosovo Consolidated Budget, but also by donors for specific projects and for technical professional support. The mission of the Agency; to meet the needs of users with qualitative statistical data, objective, in time and space so that users have reliable base to conduct regular analysis in the interest of planning and project development at the municipal and country level. To support government institutions, scientific institutes, research academies, businesses in order to provide proper information for decision-makers and other users in Kosovo.
