1 Silva Balcanica, 19(3)/2018 A CHECK LIST AND AREOGRAPHY OF LONGHORN BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: CERAMBYCIDAE) IN VITOSHA MOUNTAIN Pavel Topalov Forest Research Institute Sofia, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Abstract The analysis of literature data and studies of original biological materials showed that the complex of longhorn beetles in Vitosha Mt. includes 121 taxa from six subfamilies: Prioninae (2 species), Lepturinae (37 species and subspecies), Necydalinae (1 species), Spondylidinae (7 species and subspecies), Cerambycinae (35 species and subspecies) and Lamiinae (39 species and subspecies). Three species and one subspecies were established as new for Vitosha Mt.: Aegosoma scabricorne, Pedostrangalia (Pedostrangalia) revestita, Stictoleptura (Melanoleptura) scutellata scutellata and Hylotrupes bajulus. The established taxa belong to 20 zoogeographical categories and 7 complexes. The European complex occupies a dominant position 44 taxa (36.4%), followed by the Palaearctic complex 25 taxa (20.6%). The Mediterranean and Eurosiberian taxa are almost equally presented in the total complex 15 taxa (12.4%) and 17 taxa (14.0%), respectively. However, the cerambycid endemics in Vitosha Mt. (two taxa, 1.7%) have a smaller share compared to endemics for the country (6.8%). Key words: Cerambycidae, areography, Vitosha Mt., Bulgaria INTRODUCTION The cerambycid fauna (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) of Vitosha is relatively well studied due to the disposition of the mountain near to Sofia, and the interest of collectors to this taxonomic group. It should be noted, however, that despite the existence of numerous publications and two targeted studies (Migliaccio et al., 2004; Doychev et al., 2009), there is still a lack of enough knowledge about the species composition, distribution and host plants of the longhorn beetles in the mountain. The aim of this study is to report new data about distribution of cerambycids in Vitosha, as well as to represent new records and to make areographic analysis of cerambycid fauna of the Mountain. MATERIAL AND METODS The present work is based on literature data and original research results. 25

2 The original studies were conducted during the period by the following entomological methods: hand collection of cerambycids on flowers and host plants; collection of adult insects on grass, bushes and low parts of tree crowns with entomological bag; identification of larvae and adults found in tissues and organs of tree and shrub vegetation; rearing of adults in laboratory conditions from infested stems and branches of host plants. The new taxa for Vitosha Mt. are marked with an asterisk (*). The adults were identified by the keys of Plavilstshikov (1936, 1940, 1958) and Bense (1995), and the larvae by the keys of Švácha, Danilevsky (1986, 1987, 1988). The longhorn beetles are listed in systematic order, by the system of Danilevsky (2018), without indicated tribes. The data about recent cerambycids taxa distribution is based on Danilevsky (2018). According to Georgiev & Hubenov (2006), Sakalian & Langourov (2007) and Georgiev et al. (2018) conceptions, the established taxa are arranged in 20 chorotypes (areographic categories). RESULTS The total number of cerambycid taxa in Vitosha Mt. is 121 from five subfamilies: Prioninae (2 species), Lepturinae (37 species and subspecies), Necydalinae (1 species), Spondylidinae (7 species and subspecies), Cerambycinae (35 species and subspecies) and Lamiinae (39 species and subspecies). 20 In this study four taxa were established as new for Vitosha Mt.: Aegosoma scabricorne, Pedostrangalia (Pedostrangalia) revestita, Stictoleptura (Melanoleptura) scutellata scutellata and Hylotrupes bajulus. The established cerambycid taxa belong to 20 areographical categories separate in 7 complexes (Table 1). The European complex occupies a dominant position 44 taxa (36.4%), followed by the Palaearctic complex 25 taxa (20.6%) (Fig. 1). The Mediterranean and Eurosiberian taxa are almost equally presented in the total complex 15 taxa (12.4%) and 17 taxa (14.0%), respectively. Table 1. 21 Percentage Fig. 1. Areographic complexes of longhorn beetles in Vitosha Mt. DISCUSION One subspecies, Dorcadion (Carinatodorcadion) fulvum erythropterum was previously reported for Vitosha Mt. under synonymous name Carinatodorcadion fulvum canaliculatum Fischer-Waldheim, 1823 (Minkova, 1961; Topalov et al., 2014). The dominantion of deciduous forest stands in Vitosha Mt. allows domination (36.4%) of European complex in studied region. The presence of boreal forests in Vitosha Mt. also reflects in relatively high share of the taxa from Palaearctic and Eurosiberian complexes 20.6% and 14.0%, respectively. This peculiarity is characteristic for high mountains. By comparison, the taxa proportion from Palaearctic and Eurosiberian complexes in Strandzha Mt. are only 11.0 and 10.4% (Georgiev et al., 2018). The relative low level of the taxa from the Mediterranean complex of Vitosha Mt. (12.4%) is quite logical and it is less than the values for Bulgaria (as whole) and Strandzha 19.5% and 45

22 27.3%, respecitely (Georgiev, Hubenov, 2006; Georgiev et al., 2018). But nevertheless the impact of Mediteranean taxa of cerambycids fauna formation in Vitosha as considerable. In addition, the cerambycid endemics in Vitosha Mt. (1.7%) have a smaller share compared to endemics for the country (6.8%) (Georgiev, Hubenov, 2006) and Strandzha Mt. (3.3%) (Georgiev et al., 2018). In conclusion it should be noted, that new records increase the strength of cerambycid fauna in Vitosha Mt. The finding of 121 taxa (approximately 45% of longhorn beetles in Bulgaria) indicates that this taxonomic group is not yet well studied and species are expected to be found in future investigations in the region.
