4 Useful Information on Poland ALL MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ARE ACCEPTED LOCATION: Poland is located in Central Europe. The country is bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania to the east; and the Baltic Sea and Russia to the north. The total area of Poland is 312,679 square kilometers (120,726 sq mi). POPULATION: Poland has a population of over 38 million people. The capital of Poland Warsaw has 1.7 million citizens. There are several other major cities, such as Krakow (Cracow), Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk, Szczecin, Lodz, Katowice, Lublin, Rzeszow. LANGUAGE: The official language is Polish. English and German are widely spoken in hotels and the tourist industry. TIME: Poland is in the Central European Time Zone: GMT + 1. Summertime is applicable from the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October when they set the clock back one hour. If you convert 1 USD into Polish Zloty you will receive about 3 PLN. In fact, the Polish Zloty exchange rate may fluctuate many times during the day. Major foreign currencies may be exchanged for Polish Zlotys at banks or exchange counters, identified by the name KANTOR. They are located in many places like hotels, train and bus stations as well as main streets in cities. The bank notes: 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10 zlotys. The coins: 5, 2, 1 zloty and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 grosz. CREDIT CARDS: An increasing number of establishments in Poland accept credit cards. Among the most popular are American Express, VISA, MasterCard, Carte Blanche, Diner s Club, Eurocard. Special information stickers are put on the doors and windows of business offices which accept payment with credit cards. Holders of credit cards can obtain cash from banks or ATMs. TRAVEL DOCUMENTS: U.S. and Canadian citizens do not need a visa for leisure or business travel to Poland, and they can stay for up to 90 days without a visa. Your passport expiration date must be at least six months after your return to the United States or Canada. For further information please visit the website of the Polish Embassy or Consulate in your country. CLIMATE: Poland has a moderate climate. The average temperature in July is 67 F (19 C). There are, of course, very hot days when temperatures exceed 86 F (30 C). The coldest winter months are January and February, when average temperatures drop to a few degrees below freezing. During exceptionally cold winters, temperatures as low as -22 F (-30 C) have been recorded. With huge snowfalls, the Polish mountains offer good conditions for winter sports enthusiasts. CUSTOMS FEES: Every visitor can bring ordinary gifts and souvenirs, which cannot be used for commercial purposes. You must consider their nature and quantity. The total value must be less than 175 EUR. According to the present rates, as listed in the official table of custom fees, souvenirs that exceed the value of 175 EUR are subject to duty. 5 Warsaw - City with an Attitude Krakow - A Treasury of World Heritage Sites OLD TOWN WILANOW PALACE DANCE FESTIVAL WAWEL CATHEDRAL, the capital of Poland is located in the middle of Europe, at the crossroads of transportation routes from the west to the east and from the north to the south of the Continent. For over a dozen years, Warsaw has been growing dynamically and has become a modern and open city. Its characteristic features are history and atmosphere with strong influences of Western and Eastern cultures. KRAKOW is undoubtedly one of the most interesting cities of Poland and Europe. For over a thousand years, it has been a center of Polish science, culture and art. The city owes its unique character to extraordinary architecture that dates back to the times when Krakow was the capital of Poland and Wawel was the seat of kings. Krakow survived the destruction of World War II, which enabled the Old Town to preserve its former glory. Tourist Highlights: OLD TOWN a great reconstruction of the 14th-century town surrounded by a Barbican, destroyed during World War II: a monument included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. ROYAL PALACE the seat of Polish kings and between also of the President of the Republic of Poland. Destroyed during WWII and reconstructed in ROYAL ROUTE starts from Castle Square and ends in Wilanow. Its first part, including Krakowskie Przedmiescie and Nowy Swiat streets, is the most elegant in Warsaw. ROYAL LAZIENKI PARK one of the largest and most beautiful palace and park complexes in Europe, founded by the last king of Poland, Stanislaw August Poniatowski. WILANOW PALACE a baroque residence of King Jan III Sobieski. GRAND THEATRE AND NATIONAL OPERA located in the heart of Warsaw, is one of the most important sites on the cultural map of the city. The theatre offers the best plays, operas and ballets. Nearby: ZELAZOWA WOLA a 19th-century mansion, the birthplace of Frederic Chopin who also spent his first years there. In the summer, each Sunday offers public piano concerts at a local park. LOWICZ a center of folk tradition. The Lowicz region still teems with folklore, mainly in such domains as weaving, embroidery, paper cuts, pottery and sculpture. WILANOW is a district of the city of Warsaw, Poland. It is home to historic Wilanow Palace, the Polish Versailles, and second home to Polish kings. KRAKOW Tourist Highlights: MAIN MARKET SQUARE the biggest medieval market square in Europe; a place of unique historical, cultural and social importance. It teems with life throughout the years. KAZIMIERZ the former Jewish district, Europe s largest center of Jewish religion, science and culture before WWII. Today, you may visit the synagogues, historic houses and remainders of defense walls that survived the ravages of war. WAWEL once the seat of a duke and later of Polish kings. An integral part of the Wawel complex is the Cathedral with a Renaissance Zygmunt chapel and the Zygmunt bell. Nearby: WIELICZKA SALT MINE a rock salt mine with Europe s unique 3,5 km-long tourist route where you may admire an amazing underground world with chapels, lakes, old mining equipment and salt sculptures. It is a unique monument listed on the first UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List in AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU/OSWIECIM Europe s largest German Nazi concentration and death camp from World War II. The complex consists of two main camps: Auschwitz I, the administrative center, and Auschwitz II (Birkenau), the extermination camp. WADOWICE the birthplace and hometown of Karol Wojtyla, later Pope John Paul II. Here he was baptized, went to school and grew up. The former family house of John Paul II now holds a museum. CZESTOCHOWA the local Pauline monastery in Jasna Gora is visited by thousands of pilgrims. They pilgrimage to the miraculous picture of the Holy Mother of Jasna Gora, the most precious Polish relic. The vault in Jasna Gora holds a rich collection of gold treasures and national memorabilia. 5

Here the Constitution of May 3rd was proclaimed in 1791, the second oldest constitution, after the U.S. Constitution, in the world. You will admire some of its 300 rooms and see the Canaletto Room with 23 of his paintings, the Throne Room, the magnificent Knight s Hall with six large paintings by Marcello Bacciarelli, the Marble room with its 22 portraits of Polish kings and the largest and most impressive of all the castle s chambers, the Ballroom. After lunch served at a local restaurant in Old Town, we continue our tour with a drive to the area of the former Warsaw Ghetto. En route, you will see the building of the National Opera House and Town Hall. During your tour of Warsaw we invite you to the famous Warsaw chocolate factory Wedel to taste the delicious hot chocolate at the Wedel Old Fashioned Shop. In the evening we arrive in Zakopane beautifully situated at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, in the valley between Gubalowka and Giewont. It is the most popular resort in Poland and one of the most beautiful places in all of Poland, owing to its picturesque location. Once, a small mountain village, Zakopane became a fashionable artist s retreat at the beginning of the 20th century. DAY 5. Tuesday ZAKOPANE (Breakfast, Dinner) In the morning, you will have a sightseeing tour of Zakopane. You will visit the Jaszczurowka Chapel, a great example of the wooden architecture in Zakopane, and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima at Krzeptowki, which was built by the people of Zakopane to thank the Lady of Fatima for saving the Pope after an attempt on His life. Admire the breathtaking views of the Tatras from the top of Gubalowka Mountain and shop for souvenirs of arts and crafts of the Highlanders (Gorale) in the local shops. 7 Warsaw - Zakopane - Krakow A-1 DAY 6. Wednesday ZAKOPANE KRAKOW After breakfast, spend a relaxing day on your own and take a spectacular rafting trip on the Dunajec River in Pieniny National Park. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, we leave for the medieval city of Krakow. DAY 7. Thursday KRAKOW (Breakfast, Dinner) The morning sightseeing tour will feature Wawel the Royal Castle, home to three dynasties of Poland s monarchs. Its stately halls and exquisite chambers are filled with priceless art, valuable period furniture and rare ancient objects. The collection of monumental 16th century tapestries is matchless. You will also visit Wawel Cathedral, the place of the cult of St. Stanislaw and of St. Jadwiga, Queen of Poland. These 18 chapels are true architectural masterpieces. The giant bell, Zygmunt from 1520 ranks with the world s largest. This is the place where Polish kings were crowned and buried. Following a short break for coffee and cake at the famous Krakow café, a place designed by local artists with beautiful glass-painted windows and interesting drawings, we drive to Old Town with its restored Main Square of magnificent houses and palaces. Friday KRAKOW AUSCHWITZ WADOWICE KRAKOW After breakfast, we leave for Auschwitz, the site of the former Nazi Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous death factory. Today, a Museum, it is a silent witness to human tragedy. In the afternoon, we return to Krakow via Wadowice, the birthplace of John Paul II. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will see the house where He was born and grew up. From the window of His bedroom He used to see a clock with the sign Time flies, eternity awaits. In the Basilica of Wadowice, where Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II, was baptized you can still see the special plaque that commemorates this fact as well as a stone font where the Pope prayed during His first pilgrimage to Poland in From here, we return to Krakow. Upon arrival, you will have free time. DAY 9. Saturday KRAKOW WIELICZKA LOWICZ (Breakfast, Dinner) This morning we drive to Wieliczka to see the underground world of the oldest salt mine in Europe. Admire the salt chambers, monuments all carved in salt by many generation of Polish miners. You will be fascinated by the fabulous St. Kinga Chapel with its beautiful chandeliers, a masterpiece of salt work art. After lunch on your own, we depart for Warsaw. On the way, we will stop in Lowicz, a typical Mazovian town famous for folk art: especially noteworthy are the colorful costumes and beautiful paper cut-outs. You will be invited for a home-hosted dinner by a local family, whose charming cottage is located at the foot of the former Lowicz Castle. You will be welcomed in a typical Polish way, with bread & salt, and enjoy your meal served by the young married couple in their lovely house. Saturday WROCLAW RYDZYNA (Breakfast, Dinner) After breakfast, we visit Panorama Raclawicka a single painting arranged along the interior walls of a rotunda as one unbroken circle and viewed from an elevated central balcony. The picture represents the battle of Raclawice, fought on April 4th, 1794 between the Polish insurrectionist army led by Tadeusz Kosciuszko, and Russian troops.
