KELLY TIDWELL, COMMODORE The much anticipated annual 2017 SGYC Commodore s Ball will be held on Veteran s Day, Saturday, November 11 th. The theme will be Salute to our Military. This year the Black Tie Ceremony, Dinner & Dance will be at Sea Cliff Country Club. Cocktails and a lavish Seafood Display and Fromage Board will start the Soiree in the Pacific Lounge, followed by passed Hors D oeuvres under the Market Lights on the Oval Terrace. The Change of Watch and Installation Ceremony will be held in the Pacific Room. A dinner of Filet Mignon, Sea Bass and other gourmet specialties will be served ending with Dessert and a Champagne Toast to the 2018 Flag Officers. After dinner the evening s energy will really ignite with the ever popular local band, Flyer. Flyer holds the SoCal record for playing classic rock music in one establishment for 32 years. CINDY BROZ ALLEN, VICE COMMODORE The September 10 th Duffy Cruise to HHYC Brunch was hosted by SC Jeff and Bonnie Specht. SGYC members and guests arrived by Duffy or car where they enjoyed a tasty fare of made to order omelets, waffles, eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, and more! Also in September was the popular Tuesday Cruzin hosted by SC Mike and Sharon Courtway where Members came to Pelican Isle for the camaraderie and food. The Newport Cruise on September th was hosted by Jeff and Tina Haas and SC Cliff and Sandy Meier with vital assistance of Robin Clark and Bruce anchoring the boats to the FIN-TASTIC. The Thursday Wine Pairing Party was held on SC Ray and Jan Nagele s boat, Yorkshire Rose. Friday night SGYC members and guests enjoyed a plated salad, an appetizing buffet, chocolate cake and serenading by Commodore Kelly Tidwell at the American Legion Yacht Club. Robin Clark won the wine basket with picnic items. The Saturday raftup cocktail party featured a Dark n Stormy drink served along with appetizers, on Robin and Jean Clark s boat, the FIN-TASTIC. Mona and Ron Jones guessed the number of shells in a jar to win a beautiful champagne basket. Sunday, there were calm seas to our Harbour. October 3 rd was the Annual Meeting where we voted for 2018 Officers. The new additions to our 2018 Board are Rear Commodore Francis Okino and Port Captain Michael Pace. We thanked Port Captain Jim Hagin and Judie and JSC Mark Monroe and Lina for their service to SGYC. SC Mark Monroe will continue as Fleet Surgeon. We also thanked Robin and Jean Clark who graciously agreed to let SGYC decorate their boat, FIN-TASTIC, for the 2018 Boat Parade. And I especially want to give a big THANK YOU to the 2017 Board members who signed on for 2018! October 14 th, SC John and Margaret Humphreys hosted the lively Jimmy Buffett Party, where (perfect!) margaritas were made by Port Captain Jim Hagin. A wonderful entertainer sang our favorite Jimmy Buffett songs and there was an abundant barbecue with Beef Brisket, Chicken and all the fixings. Support our Club and our event hosts and sign up early, you don t want to miss out on all the fun!! ERLENE PACE, REAR COMMODORE Ahoy Boating Buddies! Yeah, we have a boat to decorate, Robin & Jean Clark have graciously donated their beautiful FIN-TASTIC for this year's Huntington Harbour Boat Parade. The theme is "Musical Kicks on Route 66". There will be a meeting at the Bonaire Clubhouse on Sunday, Nov. 5th at 2:00 pm. Some volunteers already signed up at the Annual Meeting, but everyone that would like to help is more than welcome to. Please contact me if you have any questions. Thanks
On September 10 th Seagate Yacht Club enjoyed a wonderful Duffy Cruise and Brunch at Huntington Harbour Yacht Club. Around 50 members came by Duffy and enjoyed a beautiful morning with their friends.
SGYC Newport Cruise was one for the books. Boats gathered on Thursday, Sept. 21 for the early-arrival activities. Friday featured dinner at the American Legion. Saturday included a shell-counting contest.
Parrot heads and other lovers of Jimmy Buffett s music gathered at Seagate Club House on Saturday October 14 th for an amazing evening of fun, music and dancing with a delicious barbecue.
2017 ANNUAL MEETING SGYC 2018 BOARD OF DIRECTORS "DayTripper" Adventure From Mike Courtway, 2006 Staff Commodore I want to share with SGYC members information on a very enjoyable trip Sharon and I made the first week in October. It's a trip that can be made in smaller boats as well as larger ones. A friend of mine made the trip last year in his dingy. He and his two buddies came back wringing wet. The trip is to the USS IOWA exhibit in San Pedro. What made the trip so enjoyable is once you pass the Long Beach Harbor entrance you can stay inside the federal break wall all the way over to San Pedro Harbor. When you turn into San Pedro you almost immediately pick the sight of the USS IOWA docked a mile or so ahead on the port side. As you slide into the harbor you pass Ports of Call on the port. As you near the bow of the USS IOWA, you pass the Maritime Museum and then observe the Fire Station. Between the two is an opening to a public harbor. Pull in and find a place to dock. It's a large, new docking system. Once you have secured your boat, walk out to the street, turn right and walk past the fire station. You will then see the ticket booth and entrance to the USS IOWA. The tour takes about two hours and is well worth the effort. There are other things to do in the area. The docks are right next to the Maritime Museum and next to that, an Acapulco Restaurant. Ports of Call is a little longer walk. Upon arrival we were the first boat in the harbor. When we left, there were two other boats tied up, including a large Carver. An engine room tour starts soon, also. The trip is 14 miles, dock to dock. A very enjoyable day trip. Call the ticket booth for more
DR. MARK MONROE, M.D. STAFF COMMODORE Shoulder Injury Q: On the recent cruise to Avalon I was jumping off my boat s swim step while holding on to it. I felt excruciating pain in my shoulder and thought I had dislocated it. When I went to the Avalon clinic, after he x-rayed it, the doctor told me I have a Rotator Cuff Tear. What is the Rotator Cuff Tear?
