1 With Special VENT Leader David Bishop voyage From the Cape of Good Hope to Gibraltar Exploring the Cult ural & Natural Diversity of Africa Aboard the All-Suite, 114-Guest Corinthian II March 17 - April 21, 2010 cape of good hope/cape town
2 Dear Friends, The countries that constitute the western side of Africa form a mosaic so vast and varied that its richness and diversity are difficult to comprehend. In spring 2010, we invite you to follow in the wake of the early explorers and along the route of prosperous merchant ships of the 18 th and 19 th centuries on a 34-day epic voyage that will ply a remarkable course encompassing the grand scope of Africa, traversing the entire length of its Atlantic coast. It is an astonishing itinerary aboard the elegant 57-suite Corinthian II encompassing 13 different nations, and calling at ports and exploring destinations largely unknown to most travelers. Embarking in South Africa s Cape Town, the bustling port city that was founded near the landmark Cape of Good Hope, you will explore practically every country along Africa s west coast: South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Republic of Congo, Gabon, São Tomé and Príncipe, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Morocco, before the ship arrives at the Rock of Gibraltar, another of the world s great sea landmarks, ending the voyage in historic Seville. It is an unprecedented opportunity to observe the differences in ancient cultures and tribal customs, landscape and animal life, from the towering dunes of Namibia to the remarkable wildlife of Gabon s rainforests, from the markets of Ghana and Senegal to the medinas of Morocco. This voyage presents a richly kaleidoscopic, lushly complex experience of a continent that defies description. Africa is much more than the grandeur of its ancient landscapes, more than its exhilarating wildness. Making this remarkable voyage even more special will be a team of lecturers, discussing topics including history, anthropology, and natural history. Included in this team will be David Bishop, one of VENT s most popular leaders and a longtime member of our staff. We have planned a series of extraordinary events that include a memorable dinner in the sand dunes of the Namib Desert, a safari to the unspoiled rainforests and lagoons of Gabon, a tea ceremony in Berber tents in the Sahara, an exploration of Benin s voodoo cultures, and meetings with government and world organization representatives. The extraordinary itinerary, the events and activities planned, the expert lecturers and Corinthian II, with its spacious suites and limited number of passengers (for more information, please see the ship copy in this brochure), combine to make Voyage From the Cape of Good Hope to Gibraltar the trip of a lifetime. I encourage you to make your reservation today. Sincerely, Victor Emanuel President

He revels in sharing and interpreting the natural world with kindred spirits. David was once a police officer in the heart of London, UK, and the skills he acquired during those early evolutionary days have served him well during his explorations of the wilds of New Guinea and the Oriental Region. During his 35 years of field work David re-discovered the once thought to be extinct Wallace s Standardwing and made many exciting discoveries in the avian world details of which have been published in the scientific literature. People love to travel with David. His boundless enthusiasm and breadth of knowledge of the natural world are contagious. This knowledge is allied with finely-honed skills which include not only finding birds, mammals, and other wildlife, but an ability to ensure that everyone sees that Ground Hornbill or elephant shrew. David s remarkable auditory memory not only enables him to pick out those birds you so wish to see, but also permits an enviable ability to quickly learn indigenous languages. In the 35 years since David left the shores of England, he has undertaken extensive field research on a number of ecological/conservation themes. This important research continues. Although David s primary area of expertise lies in New Guinea and Asia, he makes regular field trips to Africa. This includes leading Victor Emanuel Nature Tours annual tour of Madagascar. David has also developed a special interest in the forests of Gabon, which make a fascinating comparison with the biota and ecological dispositions of Borneo and New Guinea birds and wildlife. Share with David the joy of following the Northern Spring and all the excitement this cruise has to offer as we wend our way up the entire west coast of the great continent of Africa. Do n a l d C. Jo h a n s o n, is among the most important and accomplished paleoanthropologists of our time. He is responsible for groundbreaking discoveries, including the most widely known and thoroughly studied fossil find of the 20 th century the Lucy skeleton. Since Charles Darwin posed the theory of evolution, scientists have speculated about humankind s place in nature. Dr. Johanson s 1974 discovery of a 3.2-million-year-old hominid fossil in Ethiopia added a crucial link in our knowledge and understanding of the human evolutionary past. In the 34 years since Johanson earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, he has led field explorations in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and the Middle East, and effectively reached across multiple media platforms hosting and narrating the Emmy nominated PBS/NOVA series In Search of Human Origins, co-authoring nine books, and lecturing at universities, corporations, and public forums to share his findings and stimulate healthy debate. On this voyage of the western coast Africa, Dr Johanson will help us appreciate the central idea that has informed his career: that we cannot fully grasp who we are and where we are headed as a species until we have a more complete knowledge of our evolutionary roots. A Matter of Value We have always prided ourselves on offering our clients extraordinary value. But we are not certain we have done as much as we should to make clear to prospective travelers what distinguishes our programs from others. To start with, our programs are all-inclusive. There are no hidden fees. Port dues, group transfers, gratuities to porters and guides all are included as is all sightseeing. The bar aboard ship is open, and wine at lunch and dinner is complimentary. But the value we offer only begins there. Our aim is to provide travelers with an experience that is literally unavailable anywhere else. Our ships have deservedly earned a reputation for unsurpassed comfort, service, and cuisine. But it is our dedication to bringing together diverse, congenial, and inquisitive people in an enterprise of discovery that truly sets us apart. Exploring the world in the company of like-minded travelers under the leadership of scholar-teachers from the nation s leading universities and museums this is the experience we offer. And it is a value our travelers treasure for the rest of their lives.
