From humble beginnings chartering sturdy, Russian, polar research vessels to explore the high latitudes, Aurora Expeditions is now proud to announce the inaugural voyages of our state-ofthe-art expedition ship, the Greg Mortimer. Just like its namesake, the Australian mountaineer and Aurora Expeditions co-founder, the Greg Mortimer pushes the boundaries of exploration using the latest innovations in naval technology. Exclusively designed for expedition cruising, the 104-metre vessel will allow us to continue providing the authentic, small-ship experience for which we are known. Thanks to its unique, patented X-Bow, it s capable of fast, comfortable transit speeds using less fuel consumption and reduced emissions. The protection of the places we visit has been Aurora s philosophy since we began. Today, environmental preservation and expeditioner safety are always at the forefront of our operations and the Greg Mortimer is being built to the latest and most stringent Polar Code specifications. Our new ship is being fitted with the latest in sonar, satellite communications and returnto-port technologies. Our team have worked closely with our ship designers to create the best expedition vessel on the seas, with its unique adventure activity preparation areas and sea-level Zodiac loading making it easier to transfer to and from the ship. As you browse through this brochure, you ll see that we continue to seek new regions to explore such as Russia's Franz Josef Land (page 48), Jan Mayen (page 50), while continuing to offer voyages to your favourite destinations including the Antarctic Peninsula, Weddell Sea, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands in the Southern Hemisphere; and Norway (including Svalbard) and Greenland in the north. 4 Birth of an ideal In 1988, Greg Mortimer hatched an audacious plan to sail to Antarctica and attempt Mount Minto, the highest unclimbed peak in the Admiralty Ranges. He had already become the first Australian to reach the summits of Mount Everest, K2 and Annapurna II without using supplementary oxygen. Returning triumphant, Greg and his future wife, Margaret, founded Aurora Expeditions. Greg s quiet determination, fierce courage and larrikin streak proved ideal traits for leading polar expeditions but above all, it was his insatiable desire to explore, to push farther than others that made him successful. First ship-based adventures In 1992, our first expedition boarded an ice-strengthened ship bound for Antarctica. Greg and his merry band took every opportunity to explore, often landing where few, if any, had been before. By limiting group numbers and having the flexibility to respond to weather and ice conditions, expedition cruising was born. It s a style we ve evolved ever since, pioneering mountaineering, sea kayaking, polar snorkelling, skiing and rock climbing, expanding into the European Arctic, Australia s Kimberley Coast and the Galápagos Islands. We've also offered expeditioners the chance to retrace epic polar journeys like Shackleton s crossing of South Georgia. In doing so we ve become one of the world s leading polar specialists. Adventure remains our mainstay Today Greg s legacy is as strong as ever. Aurora Expeditions remains at the forefront of expedition cruising, where our focus is on the destination, the adventures that await and a warm, inclusive atmosphere that comes naturally when memorable times are shared. With the construction of our first purpose-built, state-of-the-art expedition vessel now underway, by October 2019, we ll be pushing the boundaries even farther. And our new ship s name? The Greg Mortimer, of course. SUSTAINABILITY Thanks to virtual anchoring, which uses GPS and high-tech steering to hold position, the delicate polar sea floor is protected from heavy chains and anchors. HYDRAULIC PLATFORMS Custom-built for Aurora Expeditions, these dedicated observation areas swing out to offer unobstructed views of polar bears, feeding whales, or the ship pushing through pack ice. At just 104 metres long, the Greg Mortimer carries a maximum of 120 expeditioners to the polar regions. Our Fly & Sail voyage option removes one sea leg, which appeals to those who prefer to cross the Drake Passage just once. It also means your travel time to the Antarctic Peninsula is cut by at least a day when you fly from Punta Arenas, Chile, to King George Island off the Antarctic Peninsula s northern tip, and sail back. You can also choose to sail to the Antarctic Peninsula and fly back from King George Island to Punta Arenas. 62 The Aurora Family VIP LOYALTY PROGRAM We are excited to announce the launch of the Aurora Family, a personally designed loyalty program for our Greg Mortimer voyages commencing October The Aurora Family will consist of three tiers of membership. Enter as a Pioneer and gain Expeditioner status. Sail with us and reap the rewards! TERMS & CONDITIONS Membership to the Aurora Family is free and automatic after your first voyage with Aurora Expeditions. Membership will automatically be upgraded to higher levels after the qualifying number of voyages is reached. Qualifying voyages include all sailings on the Greg Mortimer and Polar Pioneer, as well as Patagonia Treks operated by Aurora Expeditions, and Aurora s Kimberley voyage program. 'Welcome Home' and 'Family & Friends' vouchers/credits must be redeemed within 12 months of issue. Only one voucher per booking can be redeemed and can be combined with other offers. Vouchers will be sent within 6 8 weeks of your return from your trip. Complimentary upgrades are always subject to availability and may refer to either an upgrade to a more spacious stateroom of the same category, or a higher category at the discretion of Aurora Expeditions. Upgrades are not valid on Polar Pioneer. Onboard credits must be redeemed on your next voyage within 2 years of issue. Onboard credits refer to spending on the ship/s and include bar, ship shop and laundry charges and other items as described by Aurora Expeditions from time to time. The total credit amount must be used on one booking only and does not carry over to future bookings. If the full value is not used on the one trip, no cash reimbursement or credit will be given. Aurora Expeditions reserves the right to revise or alter the 'Welcome Home' voucher or other membership benefits at any time without notice. Bookings must be made by the expiry date shown on the voucher and cannot be taken as a cash payment. Credits toward pre/post-voyage hotels apply only to hotel bookings made through Aurora Travel Services. You are responsible for the surcharge if your chosen accommodation costs exceed the value of your credit voucher. NOTE: For the purposes of reward levels, multiple voyages marketed as a single voyage will count as one voyage only. Back-to-back voyages marketed as separate voyages will count as two separate voyages. Status is not reassessed or upgraded until after your return home.
