2 Melanesia is a group of some of the most idyllic tropical islands on earth. For millennia they have entranced the early navigators and settlers who populated them and whose paths we ll follow. We sail from New Caledonia to Papua New Guinea aboard the expedition ship, Oceanic Discoverer, on a voyage that calls at many diverse islands from dazzling rings of coral atolls, where nothing stands higher than a palm tree, to towering volcanic islands. Our marine activities include snorkeling and SCUBA diving in pristine waters and swimming off warm sandy beaches. Former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry, MA 94, will discuss with us various U.S. strategies in the Asia-Pacific region and the battles of World War II that took place in the Pacific theater. Join us for an adventure in this marine paradise! BRETT S. ThOMPSON, 83, DIRECTOR, STANFORD TRAVEL/STUDY Highlights L A about WWII history in the Solomon Islands at battle sites and U.S. military installations where shipwrecks lie both above and below the sea. T LL through villages on remote islands and observe traditional ways of life in Vanuatu. K L or dive among colorful coral and man-made reefs, sharing the waters with thousands of exotic tropical fish. into the fiery caldera of an active volcano on Tanna Island and be awed by the bubbling lava pools that carpet its floor.

F U E L c O S t S In the uncertain, often volatile oil market of late, it is difficult to predict fuel costs over the long term and, more specifically, at the time of operation of this voyage. Our prices are based upon the prevailing fuel rates at the time of brochure printing. While we will do everything possible to maintain our prices, if the fuel rates increase significantly, it may be necessary to institute a fuel surcharge. What to ExPEct We consider this to be a mildly strenuous program. No prior snorkeling experience is necessary, however all participants should be comfortable swimming unassisted in open water. Boarding our excursion vessel, the Xplorer, is safe and easy; you simply step aboard the vessel from the ship s Main Deck and Oceanic Discoverer s unique hydraulic platform gently lowers the excursion vessel into the water, ensuring that you don t need to clamber aboard or get your feet wet. Ashore, you must be able to walk moderate distances unaided, along beaches and sometimes over rough terrain, including steep and sandy trails. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program. Deposit & Final Payment A $1,000-per-person deposit is required to hold space for this program. A $200-per-person deposit is required to hold space for the optional post-trip extension. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability. cancellations & refunds Deposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-perperson cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. We recommend trip-cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you. Insurance Stanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are U.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. Our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are traveling on this program. We strongly recommend that you subscribe to optional baggage and trip-cancellation insurance. The product offered in this brochure includes special benefits if you postmark your insurance payment within a specified window: 15 days of the date listed on the confirmation letter for the Waiver of Pre-existing Conditions and coverage for Financial Insolvency; 21 days for the Cancel for Any Reason benefit. Eligibility We encourage membership in the Alumni Association as the program cost for nonmembers is $200 more than the members price. Parents and their children under 21 may travel on one membership. For more information or to purchase a membership, visit alumni.stanford. edu/goto/membership or call (650) responsibility The Stanford Alumni Association, Stanford University and our operators act only as agents for the passenger with respect to transportation and ship arrangements and exercise every care possible in doing so. We cannot accept any responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay or changes in air or other services, sickness, weather, strike, war, quarantine, force majeure or other causes beyond our control. All such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the passenger as tour rates provide arrangements only for the time stated. We reserve the right to make such alterations to this published itinerary as may be deemed necessary. The right is reserved to cancel any program prior to departure in which case the entire payment will be refunded without further obligation on our part. The right is also reserved to decline to accept or retain any person as a member of the program. No refund will be made for an unused portion of any tour unless arrangements are made in sufficient time to avoid penalties. It is understood that the ship s ticket, when issued, shall constitute the sole contract between the passenger and the cruise company. Baggage is carried at the owner s risk entirely.
