2 HARVARD STUDY LEADER John Stewart, a composer and music theorist, earned degrees from the New England Conservatory and Harvard University, where he studied with composers Earl Kim, Leon Kirchner, and Lukas Foss, among others. A composer of chamber, vocal, and orchestral music, Dr. Stewart taught at the New England Conservatory for many years before joining the faculty of Harvard University, where he taught courses in harmony, counterpoint, composition, and musicianship for over 25 years until his retirement in While at Harvard he received both the Harvard Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize (1994) and the Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Award (2008). He was named a Favorite Professor of Harvard College class of 2009 (the sixth such designation in nine years), an honor that includes a farewell statement to graduating seniors in the Harvard Yearbook. In addition to his Harvard activities, Stewart was the Founder and Director of the Young Musicians Program at Oregon s Ernest Bloch Festival. As a member of the Composer s Symposium at the Festival, he received numerous premieres of his music between 1998 and In fall 2009, Stewart was lured out of retirement for a two-year Visiting Professorship at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida. Invited by the Frost School dean to guide the establishment of a new undergraduate theory curriculum, Stewart also taught undergraduate and graduate composition students and a Stravinsky Seminar for graduate students. Recent premieres of his music have included choral works at the University of Mississippi and a Piano Trio at the University of Miami. Now happily re-retired, he divides his time between composing, painting, writing, gardening, hiking, and birding. Scheduled guest speakers may be altered due to circumstances beyond our control. 3 The Great Journey Through Europe June 22 to July 2, 2018 Amsterdam pre-program option Rhine Valley, germany join us on this Great Journey through Europe as we retrace the traditional Grand Tour undertaken by enlightened ladies and gentleman of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Travel through four countries and the western heart of the Continent on this carefully planned, exclusive itinerary. Cruise Holland s waterways, surrounded by polder land reclaimed from the North Sea, and the UNESCO designated Rhine River and its lush Rheingau wine region. Experience three of the world s legendary railways and visit five UNESCO World Heritage sites. The exclusively chartered, deluxe Amadeus Silver II, launched in 2015, provides our accommodations en route from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to Basel, Switzerland. (r,d) sunday, June 24 Cologne, Germany Enjoy the morning while cruising along the picturesque Rhine River to Cologne, one of Germany s most ancient cities, founded as a Roman military outpost in 38 B.C. From the time of Charlemagne to present day, it has flourished as the Rhineland s foremost mercantile and religious center and is the birthplace of the world famous original Eau De Cologne perfume. Explore the Altstadt (Old Town) and visit the historic Kölner Dom (cathedral), the finest example of High Gothic architecture in Germany. This UNESCO World Heritage site showcases such artistic treasures as the Milan Madonna and the Shrine of the Three Holy Kings. (b,l,d) Monday, June 25 Koblenz/Rüdesheim Go ashore this morning in Koblenz, strategically positioned at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers and where Germany s Roman past dates to 9 B.C. From the famous Deutsches Eck (German Corner), look out across the Rhine River to view the 19th century fortress of Ehrenbreitstein once the residence of the powerful Archbishop Electors of Trier. Explore this historic city during a walking tour and see the twin towered Basilica of St. Castor, which was built between the ninth and 13th centuries and features the Rhineland s distinctive Romanesque architecture. Lake Lucerne, Switzerland Cruise through the spectacular Rhine River Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Be on deck for a front row view as, with nearly every bend in the river, steep terraced vineyards rise on the slopes of the riverbanks, medieval castles crown the crags and tranquil villages nestle along the banks. See the famous Lorelei Rock legend holds that a beautiful siren lured sailors here with her enchanting song. Dock in the medieval town of Rüdesheim, the heart of Germany s wine country. Enjoy a tour aboard the unique Winzerexpress mini train, traveling through bucolic countryside vineyards en route to a private tasting of German wines. Reboard the ship and cruise through the Rheingau, Germany s most famous wine growing region, known particularly for its Riesling. Luminaries such as Goethe and Schumann came here to experience the intellectual atmosphere of its university, Germany s oldest, founded in Heidelberg has preserved its authentic Renaissance Baroque character, including the eight remaining arches of the famous Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) spanning the Neckar River. Visit imposing Heidelberg Castle, a 13th century embodiment of the city s medieval past. (b,l,d) Wednesday, june 27 Strasbourg, France The lively Alsatian city of Strasbourg fuses old and new Europe. The Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a treasure trove of medieval houses, and the charming Ponts Couverts covered bridges flanked by watchtowers at each end span the picturesque canals. It was in Strasbourg that John Calvin first established a reformed parish. See remnants of the Reformation in the beautiful Protestant and Catholic Church of St Pierre le Vieux. Nearby, the graceful sandstone Catholic Cathedral of Notre Dame is a Romanesque Gothic masterpiece. The fairy-tale appearance of a past era lives on in the Petite France district, the historic millers, tanners and fishermen s quarter along the Ill River. Walk across Lucerne s most famous landmark, the delightful wooden Chapel Bridge. Ascend Mount Pilatus by panoramic gondola to its 7,000-foot summit for a 360-degree panoramic view of central Switzerland s mountains, forests and lakes. Then, board the Pilatus Railway, the world s steepest cogwheel railway, and descend more than 5,300 feet in less than three miles on return to the shores of Lake Lucerne, where you will enjoy a scenic lake cruise.
