McmE, USN, 1 January through 31 December SUMMARY OF OPERATQNS : BLUE RDGE began 1977 at White aeach, Okinawa, serving a$ Flagship for Rear Admiral J. H. ORRS. Commander Amphibious Forces. U. S. Seventh Fleet. ~hd ship departed iihitel~each 11 january and arrived in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong on the 14th for a five day port visit. On the 19th she sailed for Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines, ar a iving there 21 January. Whilc: moored in Subic Bay BLUE DGE served as host ship for the SEVENTH Fleet Scheduling Co~ference on 27 January, and hosted Admiral Thomas B., USN, Commander in Chief, U. S. Pacific Fleet, and miral Robert B. BALDWN, USN, Commander U. S. SEVENTH F1 et, plus numerous commanding officers. The ship remained in Subic $ay until 11 February, when she sailed for White Beach, Oki away arriving on the 14th. On th.e 16th, during the three day -l inport period, RADM MORRS presented the Meritorious Unit Clitation to BLUE RDGE for the articipation in Operati n Eagle Pull, the evacuation of ship's Am.er f cans and foreign Nation 3 s from Cambodia. '

2 BLUE RDGE departed on 16 February enroute home. She left WESTPAC 22 February and arrived at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii The morning of 1 March the ship left Hawaii bound for San Diego, California with 62 "Tig rs", male dependents and guests' of crewmen who embarked for 9 the voyage to the ship's home port. At 1059, 8 March 1977 BLUE RDGE moored at Pier 6 of the 32nd Street Naval Station and ended her fourth Western Pacific deployment. This as followed by a week of stand down and an upkeep period fo the rest of the month. Ream Admiral Richard A. PADDO K, USN, Commander Amphibious Group Ealstiern Pacific embarked abo 4 rd BLUE RDGE on 18 April The ship conducted local oper tions the week of 9 to 13 May and 16 to 20 May. The morning f 20 May BLUE RDGE received a request to assist the U. S. Guard by providing fueling facilities for a helicopter en aged in a rescue mission with the sailing vessel Nixie. Thl Coast Guard helicopter refueled aboard the ship both enroute to the Nixie and again during t.he return portion of the m BLUE RDGE'S medical department provided communica controlling functions to keep the helicopter in co with its home base. After a week inport BLUE RDG~ conducted local operations off the Southern California coast between 1 and 3 June and upon return she moored at the Navy Pier 9 at the foot of Broadway in downtown. Ssn Diego, and conducted n open house on the weekend of 4-5 June. During the two days f general visiting, 1457 visitors visited the ship. The mo ning of 6 June BLUE RDGE moved from the Broadway Pier to the Naval Station's Pier 6, and remained there until the morni g of the 13th when she again conducted local at sea opera 2 ions. Returning to port on the 17th., the ship embarked RADM K. 3 J. CHRSTOPH, USN, Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group TH EE and his staff on the 20th. On 22 June BLUE RDGE again got underway and participated in Operation READEX 4-77, which c nsisted of 25 ships, 100 aircraft, and 10,000 men from the U.S. THRD Fleet. Th.e ship returned to the San ~ i e Naval ~ o Station on 1 July and remained in port for most of the month, with the exception of a short underway period 5 to 7 quly. On 5 August BLUE RDGE conducted sea trails and returned to port the morning of the 6th to embark 620 guests of the crew for a dependentls day cruise.

3 The ship's Rescue and Assista ce Team aided the USS FRESNO (LST-1183) to help with a fire in t he latter's Engineroom on 7 August. BLJE RDGE was underway betwe n 8 and 11 August for an Operational Propulsion Plant Exami ation (OPPE).. BLUE RDGE started her fifth Western Pacific deployment the morning of 24 August when she eft San Diego, bound for Pearl Harb~or, in company with the $ SS AJAX (AR-6). Embarked were Mr. Ed Leland and Mr. Dennis Jana, two Guests of the Navy, who rode the ship to Pearl H rbor. Pearl was reached on 31 Augulst. The m~rning of 3 September th ship departed Pearl Harbor and inchopped to the U.S. S i VENTH Fleet on the 12th. She arrived at White Beach, Okinawa on 17 September and again became Flagship for RADM J.. MORRS, Commander Amphibious Forces, U.S. Seventh F1! et. The following afternoon the ship got underway for local operations and'returned briefly to White Beach the afte noon of the 20th to embark 122 members of the various ervices in a Sea the World 1111 Cruise. BLUE RDGE proc eded to Manila, Republic of the 'hilippines arriving the mo1 ning of the 23rd and remaining in Manila until the 27th. On that date she got underway in the morning for Subic Bay, epublic of the Philippines. Embarked were 130 dependent's and 1 uests for the one day trip. The ship remained in Subic Bay until 4 September when she again got underway for White Beach i arriving there on 7 September; At this time the Sea the W rld 11 Cruise participants were disembarked. The following d y VADM Robert B. BALDWN, USN, Conunander, U.S. SEVENTH Fleet made an unofficial visit to the sthip. The same day, four members of the Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) had a two and a half hour visit and lunch' aboard BLUE RDGE BLUE RDGE was underway from Okinawa the morning of 9 October with Commander Task Force-! 6, Commander Task Force-79/ Commanding General Ninth Marine Am hibious Brigade embarked for Operation Bayanihan V/Fortress Lightning. The exercise was high.lighted by a major amphibi us' landing on the sland of Mindoro, Republic of the Philippines on 16 October, involving 30 ships, 130 aircraft, 20,000 men and more than 100 different commands. On 15 October the ship 4 osted members of the press, inc1udin.g NBC-TV, the Korean Broadcasting System, Washington Post and A$sociated Press. The ship ended the operation d n 23 October and steamed back to Okinawa, arriving there on the 26th. RADM MORRS

4 hauled down his flag upon arrival,) and the following day BLUE RDGE departed White Beach for a one day transit and a three day visit to Keelung, Taiwan. On tthe 31st the ship left Keelung and steamed east, outchopping on the 4th and arriving in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on 11 November. BLPE RDGE moored at the Naval Shipyard tto repair ruptured boiler tubes and departed on 15 November, with 62 "Tigers" embarked for the trip back to San Diego. BLlUE RDGE'S fifth deployment to the Western Pacific ended at 1552, Sunday, 20 November when she moored at Pier 4 U.S. Naval Station, San Diego, Cal'fornia. The ship conducted a stand down for the rest of the m t nth. BLUE RDGE again set sail on Decmeber to participate in Operation READEX 1-78 an eight da exercise.
