3 HARVARD STUDY LEADER JOHN STEWART, a composer and music theorist, earned degrees from the New England Conservatory and Harvard University, where he studied with composers Earl Kim, Leon Kirchner, and Lukas Foss, among others. A composer of chamber, vocal, and orchestral music, Dr. Stewart taught at the New England Conservatory for many years before joining the faculty of Harvard University for over 25 years retiring in While at Harvard he received both the Harvard Phi Beta Kappa Teaching Prize (1994) and the Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Award (2008), and was named a Favorite Professor of the Harvard College Class of In addition to his Harvard activities, Professor Stewart was the founder and director of the Young Musicians Program at Oregon s Ernest Bloch Festival. In fall 2009, Stewart was lured out of retirement for a two-year visiting professorship at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami, Coral Gables. Stewart also taught undergraduate and graduate composition students and a Stravinsky Seminar for graduate students. Now happily re-retired, he divides his time between composing, painting, writing, gardening, hiking, and birding. Friday, June 9 MOSCOW, RUSSIA / EMBARK VOLGA DREAM Arrive in Moscow and transfer to the river port north of the city to board the awaiting Volga Dream. D Saturday, June 10 UGLICH Enjoy a leisurely morning cruise to Uglich, whose medieval buildings loom above a sharp bend in the river. At the five-domed Church of the Transfiguration, an a cappella concert creates a starkly beautiful contrast with the glittering iconostasis surrounding the singers. Learn about the important role Uglich played in the rise of the Romanov Dynasty at the Chapel of Dimitry, built on the site where the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible met his death. Tonight, join the captain for a welcome reception and dinner. B, L, R, D Sunday, June 11 GORITSY Visit the UNESCO-listed Ferapontov Monastery, graced with frescoes that are considered among the finest examples of medieval Russian art. Enjoy some free time in this peaceful village, or tour the 14th-century Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery (the Monastery of St. Cyril on the White Lake), once one of the most important in Russia. Cross Lake Beloye formerly known as the tsar s fishing grounds en route to Lake Onega, the second-largest lake in Europe. In the afternoon, step ashore on the tiny island of Kizhy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Lake Onega. Complete details will be provided in your welcome packet. CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS All cancellations must be made in writing to HAA Travels and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. Cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure will be charged a fee in the amount of 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason.
