The Birth of the Fleet 1890/ / / / / /today In the second half of the 19 century the Messina family becomes known as shipowner of winecarrying vessels based in Riposto, Sicily. The quality leap arrives with the purchase of the Angelina, built in Great Britain in In this way Giuseppe Messina continues and expands the activity of his father and grandfather. Birth of Ignazio Messina. The Messina family moves to Genoa, where they decide to settle their headquarters and the operative management of the company. 8 The Turning Point 1890/ / / / / /today Anni Giuseppe gradually leaves the company to his son Ignazio. The company officially becomes a limited partnership. The traffic of wine decreases and the vessels are now starting to ship more remunerative commodities like sugar, wheat, petroleum and concrete. It s therefore a period of expansion for the traffics and the routes. In Genoa the company flag waves over Eritrea dock where the firm obtains a regular berth and various docks to store the cargo. The fleet is enlarged by the addition of new vessels: Borzoli, Multedo, Albarosa ed Astero. The sailings from Genoa, with a frequency of 2/3 per week, call the following ports: Leghorn-Naples- Messina-Catania-Malta- Tripoli-Homs-Sliten- Misurata-Sirte- Benghazi. Two steamships, Audace e Tenace, are put into service. Ponte Eritrea during the 30s Messina Calendar

Happy and Troubled Years 1890/ / / / / /today A regular service to Eritrea is launched and the sailings, initially on a monthly basis, become being performed fortnightly - increasing the number of the vessels in service. The ships are also arranged in order to adapt them to the various type of transports (general cargo, raw materials, labourer, troops and passengers). These years are marked by a politics of growth and expansion that enables Messina to obtain the transport of valuable commodities like cotton, hides, coffee, bananas, spices and perfumes. Ignazio Messina organises some shipping agencies in Africa hiring local staff, encourages the setting up of companies for goods loading and discharge, arranges the depots and creates firms for road haulage. Messina settles its docking zone in the newest part of the port: Sampierdarena basin, namely Etiopia and Eritrea docks. The company owns 17 vessels for a total capacity of tons, with a workforce of 70 employees and 500 sailors. In Tripoli the company handles a floating coal depot for vessel refuelling, with 40 clerks and 90 other employees (part of them in the port and part at sea). Messina takes over the Camed (Mediterranean shipyard of Pietra Ligure) with more than 300 employees. By the Second World War outbreak and up to the spring of 1945 the activity of Ignazio Messina is basically the defence of its own fleet. Messina s logo for the Ethiopian post service Eritrea dock a sunk vessel 9

Post-war Period 1890/ / / / / /today The fleet is almost completely destroyed (vessels are either sunk, confiscated or unserviceable); Lido and Goggiam are the only ones remaining. S.S. Lido Ignazio Messina commits to the reconstruction of his fleet: between 1945 and 1948 Camed builds three motor vessels for the associate company Messina: Libertà, Operosità and Concordia. Ignazio's target is to be back again on the historical routes which had been conquered in the 30s. This means restoring especially the lines that are bound for Libya and Tunisia, heading for the ports in Red Sea, West Africa and in the Arabic Peninsula and going straight on towards the East. He aims to open some routes towards West Africa and to reach the South African ports in order to serve the whole Africa. Ignazio Messina sees one of the lowest points in the history of his company. He decides to apply for credit from private citizens in order to meet his commitments. Ignazio Messina has to give up the management of the shipyard and start focusing back on the traditional familiar activity of shipowners and managers of shipping line services. Messina boasts again a fleet of a dozen vessels, including owned vessels and chartered ones, calling the ports of Magreb, Red Sea, Africa and Arabia; the contacts with the Italian ports of Leghorn and Naples are re-opened. Ignazio Messina s sons Gianfranco, Giorgio and Paolo progressively begin to work in the Company. 10 M/V Matteoemme (60ies)

A Period of Change and the Birth of Jolly Fleet 1890/ / / / / /today Jollyemme, a new Ro-Ro unit, enters the service between Genoa and Libya. It is the very first container service between Italy and a foreign country. Ignazio Messina becomes a joint-stock company. Messina Terminal is relocated to La Spezia. Death of the founder Ignazio. 12 The 90s and 2000s 1890/ / / / / /today The 1980s and 1990s The fourth generation, with Andrea Gais, Massimo Messina, Ignazio Messina, Stefano Messina and Emanuele Messina gradually enters the company and assures the management continuity The Messina family is back to Genoa as terminal operator at Nino Ronco dock, Derna wharf and the areas behind them. On the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the Company s founding, Messina gives Genoa a large glass sphere, designed by Architect Renzo Piano. It is set to become a big herbarium of ferns, one of the riches of Genoa botanical garden. It is located beside the Aquarium in the Old Port, exactly where Messina vessels used to anchor during the 60s. Messina finally manages to obtain wider spaces it had always been asking for in order to carry out and increase their trading, by extending their granted land up to Canepa dock, part of Bengasi wharf and the filled space between Ronco and Canepa docks. 12

Today 1890/ / / / / /today Genoa: Messina signs a contract with the Korean shipyard Daewoo for the construction of the four biggest Ro-Ro vessels in the world, for a total investment of 300 million dollars. These vessels are expected to start their service between October 2011 and February Together with Terminal San Giorgio in a temporary association of enterprises, Messina gains the former Multipurpose Terminal areas. Jolly Diamante will be followed by Jolly Perla (April 2012), Jolly Cristallo (September 2012) and Jolly Quarzo (February 2013). Messina signs another contract with the Korean shipyard STX for the construction of a second series of four Ro-Ro vessels, for a total investment of 300 million dollars, to be put into service between December 2014 and May

Today 1890/ / / / / /today The company is reorganized in order to respond with more efficiency to market requests and transformations: the new holding Gruppo Messina Spa is established. All shipping activities belong to a new established company, Ignazio Messina & C. SpA Delivery of Jolly Titanio. 31 Group Profile The Core Business The liner shipping company Rail and road haulage Terminal activities

Terminal Activities the Need of Space 1930/ / / /today Messina flag waves at Eritrea dock. In Messina vessels berth at Etiopia and Eritrea docks, in the basin of Sampierdarena. At a later stage vessels berth in the port of Genoa, at Marinetta, at some internal quays and at Magazzini Generali. Eritrea dock during the thirties By the realisation of the first container terminal at Libia Dock, inside the port of Genoa, Messina obtains the first berth at Tripoli Wharf where the company creates three ramp steps for the stern mooring of ro-ro vessels and installs the first shore crane to stack the containers. Messina moorings in the old port During the seventies the Tripoli Wharf Terminal becomes too small in respect of the volumes that are involved in the trades. In 1977 the company moves to La Spezia where it becomes terminal operator, keeping the offices and the management in Genova. La Spezia: Messina manages to build a naval dockyard into a real Port (partly private and partly in concession) by converting a space just outside the commercial area. Thanks to the new spaces in the following years the company increases its traffics. However, at the end of the Eighties the need of space becomes a problem again. After being asked to come back to the Port of Genoa in 1993, Messina decides to go back only in 1996, taking in concession Nino Ronco quay and Derna wharf along with the behind areas. After a few years, in spite of the larger areas compared to those Messina had in La Spezia, the lack of new spaces arises as a real problem in Genoa too: in 2004 the company manages to get a first extension, then cancelled, and in 2010 together with Terminal San Giorgio with a temporary association of enterprises, is awarded with the former sqm Multipurpose areas. Now Messina manages, in extension to the first concession it obtained in the past, Canepa quay, part of Bengasi wharf and back areas as well as the filled space between Ronco and Canepa docks. 32
