This fall, sail aboard the storied Sea Cloud, to discover secluded islands and historic towns of the Adriatic that were once centers of the Greco-Roman, Byzantine, and Renaissance worlds. We are privileged to be accompanied by art historian and distinguished professor, William Hood. He will be joined by Professor Ivo Banac of Yale University and Patrick Bowe, noted architectural historian and landscape designer. Begin in Venice to discover the city s architectural masterpieces and fine museums before embarking Sea Cloud. Sail to Ravenna, once the capital of the Western Roman Empire and known for its exquisite mosaics. Cross the Adriatic to Split, Croatia, to tour the magnificent ruins of Diocletian s Palace, and spend a day in Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic. Return to Italy to explore the baroque city of Lecce and Syracuse, Sicily, where we will visit a palazzo by special invitation. See the superb collections of the archaeological museum in Lipari before disembarking in vibrant Naples. TRAVELING WITH YOU Sincerely, William Hood is the Mildred C. Jay Professor Emeritus of Art History at Oberlin College, where he taught courses in Italian Renaissance and Baroque Art. From 2008 to 2010, he was Visiting Professor in Italian Renaissance Art History at Columbia University, and is currently a Visiting Professor at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. A recent Andrew W. Mellon Fellow at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dr. Hood has also been a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome and of the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies at Villa I Tatti in Florence. Dr. Hood holds a Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts and is the author of the acclaimed book Fra Angelico at San Marco. He has lectured at museums across the United States. Emily K. Today s visits include the exquisite Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and Theodoric s two great churches with their extraordinary mosaic processions of virgins and martyrs following the Magi. See the splendors of the Byzantine court reflected in the mosaics at the Basilica of San Vitale. Return to the ship in time for a late lunch. This evening, attend the captain s welcome reception and dinner. The Venetian Lagoon. NEW YORK Wednesday, October 8 Depart New York on an overnight flight to Venice. VENICE, ITALY SEA CLOUD Thursday, October 9 Arrive this morning in Venice. Enjoy lunch at Hotel Europa & Regina, overlooking the Grand Canal, and a walking tour of Piazza San Marco before embarking the elegant Sea Cloud. Gather on deck for a champagne toast and comments by our lecturers as we sail past the Doge s Palace and the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore and into the Venetian Lagoon. SPLIT, CROATIA Sunday, October 12 AT SEA Wednesday, October 15 During a day at sea, observe as the ship s crew practices the art of trimming the sails by hand, or perhaps settle into a comfortable deck chair with a favorite book. SYRACUSE (SICILY), ITALY Thursday, October 16 This morning explore Syracuse, one of the most important cities in antiquity. Discover the ancient Greek and Roman theaters in the Archaeological Zone and see the cathedral, built upon the ruins of the Temple of Athena. For lunch, we have been invited to the private garden estate of Il Biviere. Return to the Old City to view Caravaggio s Burial of St. Lucy, housed in the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia on the Piazza Duomo and conclude with a private visit to the Palazzo Beneventano del Bosco. LIPARI (AEOLIAN ISLANDS), ITALY Friday, October 17 This morning arrive at the colorful port of Split, dating from the 3rd century C.E. Visit the gallery of sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, with a collection of his works in marble, bronze, and wood. Continue to Diocletian s Palace, an incomparable complex of buildings featuring luminous white stone from Brac, marble from Italy, and sphinxes brought from Egypt. Return to Sea Cloud in time for lunch and set sail for Dubrovnik. DUBROVNIK, CROATIA Monday, October 13 Step ashore for a visit to the walled city of Dubrovnik, a World Heritage site which has undergone tremendous rebuilding with the assistance of UNESCO. The influence of the Venetian architects is apparent on Dubrovnik s main artery, La Placa. See the collections in the ancient Franciscan and Dominican monasteries and the Rector s Palace. Alternatively, you may wish to visit Trsteno, a private garden estate just outside the city. In the early evening, a special cocktail reception is followed by an a cappella concert with dancers in the courtyard of Palazzo Sponza. BRINDISI, ITALY Tuesday, October 14 Attend onboard lectures this morning as Sea Cloud sails toward Italy. Following lunch, arrive in the port of Brindisi. Drive past ancient olive groves to Lecce, an unspoiled Baroque city full of exuberantly ornamented churches, palaces, and houses carved from the honey-colored local stone. Often used for period movies, Lecce resembles an opera set. Visit the restored cathedral and adjoining Archbishop s Palace, the seminary, and the Church of Santa Croce. Return to the ship in time for dinner. Following a leisurely morning, tender ashore to visit Lipari. The Archaeological Museum boasts a superb collection of artifacts, including extraordinary masks from this and other islands. Dine on deck as we admire the glow of the volcanic island of Stromboli while sailing among the Aeolian Islands. AT SEA Saturday, October 18 Enjoy a relaxing day at sea as we cruise to Naples. Marvel at the glittering mosaics of the Basilica of San Marco on a specially arranged after-hours visit, and admire Titian s Assumption of the Virgin at the Frari. Travel by boat to see architectural masterworks by Andrea Palladio, including his island church of San Giorgio Maggiore and Il Redentore church on Giudecca Island. The newly restored Palazzo Grimani di Santa Maria Formosa and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection are additional highlights. Spend a day in Pompeii to learn how the ancient Romans lived, and marvel at the treasures in the National Archaeological Museum. 7 T ERMS & C ONDITIONS AIRFARE Academic Arrangements Abroad (AAA) will be pleased to assist with air travel arrangements for this program, including specially negotiated group airfare when available, suggested group flights, or your own individual requests, for a processing fee of $40 per person. Complete details will be provided in your confirmation mailing. PAYMENT SCHEDULE A deposit of $2,500 per person, payable to Academic Arrangements Abroad, of which $350 is non-refundable for administrative fees, is required with the reservation application. Final payment, by check only, must be received 120 days prior to departure. HEALTH All participants must be in good health. This program involves extensive walking over uneven surfaces and climbing stairs at monuments and other locations not handicapped accessible, and climbing in and out of various conveyances including tenders. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. Please note: Sea Cloud does not have an elevator. PHOTOGRAPHY Photographs or, in some cases, videotapes of participants of Travel with the Met trips may be used for educational and promotional purposes by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) and AAA. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfares, and currency exchange rates in effect as of the time of brochure printing and are subject to change without notice. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The participation of the Met is limited to educational sponsorship of the program described in this brochure (The Program). AAA acts only as an agent for the participant with respect to transportation, accommodations, and all other services, relating to The Program. AAA, the Met and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability for any act, error, or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay, or irregularity which may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus, or other carrier, or through neglect or default of any subcontractor or other third party, which may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the participants of The Program. The passage ticket issued by the carrier is the sole contract between the participant and the carrier. Nor will AAA or the Met and/or their agents be responsible for loss, injury, damages, or expenses to persons or property, due to illness, weather, strikes, local laws, hostilities, wars, terrorist acts, acts of nature, or other such causes in connection with The Program or anything beyond their reasonable control. AAA is not responsible for transportation or other program delays and changes, nor additional expenses or loss of time that may be incurred. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or wellbeing of the participants, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary at any time, without notice to the participants, such alterations will be made without penalty to AAA or the Met. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the participants. Baggage and personal effects are the sole responsibility of the participant at all times. AAA and the Met reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant at any time, or to require any participant to withdraw from The Program at their own expense when such an action is determined by AAA or the Met to be in the best interest of the participant s health and safety, or the general welfare of the other participants. CANCELLATION POLICY AAA must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of The Program, which may include but are not limited to: advance payments to land operators; ship charters; communication expenses; development/promotional expenses, and the loss of time that might have permitted resale of reserved space. All cancellations must be made in writing to the offices of AAA and are subject to a $350 nonrefundable administrative fee. All refunds are limited to amounts actually received by AAA and are the sole responsibility of AAA; the Met shall have no liability for refunds. At the time AAA receives written notification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellations received between 120 to 91 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days prior to departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. Air cancellation charges, if any, will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. All group fare tickets must be issued no less than 30 days prior to departure. NOTE: Neither AAA nor the Met shall be liable for any airline cancellation penalties incurred by the purchase of a nonrefundable ticket. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. However, AAA reserves the right to cancel The Program prior to departure for any reason and, in such case, reimbursement of refundable costs of the trip by AAA shall constitute full settlement with the participant. In the unlikely event that a dispute arises between a participant and AAA or the Met, the following conditions will apply: (a) the dispute will be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in New York, NY; (b) the dispute will be governed by New York Law; (c) the maximum amount of recovery to which a participant shall be entitled under any and all circumstances will be the sum of all monies actually received from the participant by AAA. The participant agrees that this is a fair and reasonable limitation on the damages, of any sort whatsoever, that a participant may suffer.
