Powered by a 1400 ihp triple expansion steam engine and two coal-fired Scotch marine boilers. Entered service in June 3, This tanker was one of two bought by the Argentine government in 1917 to carry oil from their Comodoro Rivadavia oilfield to Buenos Aires refineries at trek of nearly 1000 miles. At this time, the ARgentine Navy ran the first fleet of oil carriers comprised of three tankers. On october 17, 1921, the tanker fleet, including the ARISTOBULA DEL VALLE passed to the civilian oil agency YPF (Yacimiento Petroliferos Fiscales). By 1922, new, larger tankers arrived to lessen the DEL VALLE s worth as a tanker. In addition to oil, passengers and general merchandise were routinely carried on open decks of these tankers or wherever possible, because of the need and lack of good transportation from or to these isolated areas in extreme southern Argentina. Converted to a dry cargo vessel in 1925, trading much as it had before, but now only dry goods and passengers. It remained in Argentine registry her entire career. Sold to Feodoro C. Plonczyk of Buenos Aires in Dropped from Lloyds Register in and presumed scrapped in Aristobulo Del Valle after 1925 conversion to dry cargo carrier [DC]

Her end came in 1918 when she was destroyed by an internal explosion and fire while anchored off Presqu lle de Quiberon, Brittany, France on April 17th. The FLORENCE H. which had gone to anchor awaiting the clearance of mines, was delivering ammunition to St. Nazaire, France from the United Kingdom when the explosion occurred sinking her; 34 of her 77 crew were rescued. Then during salvage operations, the wreck of the FLORENCE H. exploded on December 7, 1930, which sank the Italian salvage vessel ARTIGLIO (the ARTIGLIO had been working on the wreck of the steamer EGYPT, which had sunk in 1922 with $5 million in gold and silver bullion when winter weather forced the ARTIGLIO to suspend operations until the following summer. She was assigned to demolish the FLORENCE H. which had been hauling 3500 tons of white and black gunpowder, guncotton and steel for the war and was a menace to navigation. Due to her successes in this manner of work in the past, a French warship was standing by noting how the 148 Italian salvage vessel went about her business). The ARTIGLIO, anchored above the wreck, had just put two divers down with special demolition mines, when the sea rose like a huge bubble with a deafening roar. The ARTIGLIO was blown into the air, broke in two, and sank immediately after landing on the water. Only seven of her 21 crew survived. The FLORENCE H s hull has been rediscovered and is a dive site for scuba divers, but little remains of her hull. It is located at approximately N W.

23 170 August Ziesing on the Detroit River [DC] Lake Bulk Freighter built at the Ecorse yard in 1918 as a) AUGUST ZIESING (US ). Launched October 30, 1917 for the Pittsburgh Steamship Co. (later the US Steel Corp. in 1952), Cleveland, OH. Dimensions: 600 loa, 580 lbp x 60 x 32 ; 8271 GRT, 6398 NRT. Powered by a 1,900 ihp triple expansion steam engine and three coal-fired Scotch marine boilers. The AUGUST ZIESING entered service on April 14, 1918 departing the shipyard light bound for Two Harbors, MN to load iron ore. Her tonnage changed due to a rebuild in 1937 to 7969 GRT, 6143 NRT, 13,300 dwt. She was reboilered in March, 1955 with two coal-fired water tube boilers. Rated service speed: 10 knots (11.5 mph). On May 20, 1960 the ZIESING collided with the American Steamship steamer STANDARD PORTLAND CEMENT in a dense fog two miles above Port Huron, MI in Lake Huron. The American SS bulker sank but there was no loss of life. The vessel was raised three days later and repaired at the GLEW at River Rouge yard and later sailed Canadian as the ELMDALE. Apparently little damage was inflicted on the ZIESING. On September 13, 1968 the ZIESING grounded in fog two-hundred yards above the Rock Cut in the St. Marys River. The grounded vessel swung into the shipping channel blocking traffic until September 15th when lightering was completed. The ZIESING was towed by the steamer JOHN G. MUNSON (2) to Gary, IN for repairs. The AUGUST ZIESING was laid up for the last time November 26, 1974 at Hallett Dock #6A, Duluth, MN. On July 1, 1984 she was sold to Hyman-Michaels Co. of Duluth for scrap. The ZIESING was resold to Shearmet Recycling of Thunder Bay, ON and was towed there October 5, 1985 but operations were shut down because the company went out of business before scrapping could begin. The ZIESING was resold to U.L.S. International for scrapping at their Algoma Steel dock site at Port Colborne, ON. The tow passed Detroit, MI downbound August 16, 1986 on the way to Port Colborne. Dismantling was completed at Port Colborne by mid-november three months after she had arrived there.

26 The next four hulls built under the same contract by the Great Lakes Engineering Works were nearly identical stemwinder type ships, basically a ship with all cabins and machinery aft. Two were built at the Ashtabula yard and two at Ecorse. Dimensions: 261 loa, 253 kl : 2486 GRT, 1872 NRT, 4000 dwt. As result of shipping surplus, LAKE GEORGE laid up at Philadelphia in November, Was sold to the Davidson Steamship Co., Duluth, MN on July 28, 1922 and returned to the Lakes. LAKE GEORGE s claim to fame occurred in 1930 when she set a speed record for completing a voyage loaded with wheat from Duluth to Montreal in three hours less than eight days. Due to the Depression, she laid up at Bay City in 1932, where she remained until being sold to Win On Steamship Co., Shanghai, China for $50,000 in July, 1937 and renamed c) WIN ON.
