SITKA, ALASKA SITKA When in Sitka, you must look for sea otters. The area s most unique creature is a huge part of the history of this region. Sea otters were near extinction at the hands of Russian fur hunters in the early-1800s, as fur was the first important commodity exported from Alaska, before gold or oil. This gentle creature was nearly extinct during the sea otter trade, and even today they re rare. 6
