Together, we'll experience the remarkable amphitheater in Pula, then cross to Italy for an inland visit to Urbino. In Ravenna, the city s celebrated mosaics will inspire us along the journey toward Venice. The elegant Sea Cloud is a destination unto herself. As her energetic crew scales the masts to set the sails by hand, we'll relax in the congenial company of Harvard alumni and members of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Traveling with us will be Boris Berman, Professor in the Practice of Piano at the Yale School of Music. Professor Berman regularly appears with leading orchestras, in major recital series, and at important festivals. Also joining us aboard Sea Cloud will be Robert Darnton of Harvard University, who will lecture on history and Marco Leona from the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, who will speak about conservation and preservation. He studied at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with the distinguished pianist Lev Oborin. A Grammy nominee, he is a prolific recording artist. In 1984 Professor Berman joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music, where he is The Sylvia and Leonard Marx Professor in the Practice of Piano, coordinator of the piano department, and music director of the Horowitz Piano Series. He also gives master classes throughout the world and is a frequent juror of international competitions. He was given the honorary professorships in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the China Conservatory in Beijing, and Royal Danish Conservatory in Copenhagen. In 2000 Yale University Press published Professor Berman s Notes from the Pianist s Bench, the second edition of which appeared recently. In 2008 the same publisher released his book Prokofiev s Piano Sonatas: A Guide for the Listener and the Performer. Both books have been translated into several languages. U.S. DEPARTURE Sunday, June 30 Depart for Dubrovnik on an overnight flight. DUBROVNIK CROATIA Monday, July 1 Arrive this afternoon in Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic, and embark the awaiting Sea Cloud. Enjoy a glass of champagne on deck as you sail out of the harbor. (D) HVAR, CROATIA Tuesday, July 2 Spend a relaxing morning at sea before docking in Hvar. Drive to nearby Stari Grad, one of Europe s oldest towns, for some free time in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then travel to Spagnola Fortress, perched high above the town of Hvar, to admire the views. On a walking tour of Hvar, see where its 13th-century walls surround a treasure trove of Gothic palaces and cloisters, Baroque cathedrals, and grand squares. Visit the Meštrović Gallery, a museum dedicated to the work of the 20th-century sculptor. Continue to Kaštelet, a 16th-century fortified home, bought by Meštrović in 1939 and now housing his powerful wood reliefs. Return to Split for a historical walking tour, including a visit to Diocletian s Palace, one of the world s best-preserved examples of Roman architecture. After lunch, drive to scenic Trogir, whose many medieval buildings helped secure its World Heritage status.
