1 Monday, January 25, 21 - Week 4 The Week at a Glance Baltic Dry Indices* Last Fridays Closing Weekly Difference A Book s cover We thought of being a little philosophical this week! Well, it s an old saying but our communities have long forgotten about it. Why we keep on judging all things from what it looks and seems? Same takes place in most of our transactions as well. We are manipulated by the press and the ones owning the media rule the psychology of the mass. This explains the over-exposure of Greece s adverse economic outlook, though many countries worldwide and even many so called developed and industrial countries have proven worst economic data to show. We have even believed some evaluation houses ranking Lehmann Brothers stock into BUY just 2 days before it collapses. Consequently, the so called $1.. question is: Who to trust? I am afraid there is no simple answer to that and the only rational criteria on which someone has to rely on is only his pocket. Done but Failed True or False: The reported sale of the 1991 built RORO LEADER for demolition last week was not correct as the vessel is still trading regularly. 2 Secondhand Sales Dry Comments Capes retracted severely on last Monday and Tuesday and even if all routes increased during the rest of the week the finishing line was on the negative side. The Pacific market reversed totally with the Pacific RV at %. T/C Average at US$ 4,37. In general, the Panamaxes followed once more the Capes' trend although with minor ups and downs. It seems that Panamaxes are on hold, waiting for further developments in the market of their more voluminous sisters. T/C Average at US$ 29,417. Supramaxes softened at average -3.51% with all numbers going 1 working days back. Many Supramaxes appear on stream which were well expected but soon enough we will see the results. T/C Average at US$ 25,63. For one more week Handies remain solid with all routes and basins stable. T/C Average at US$ 17,613. Interest in period fixtures was tailed off due to the high fluctuations observed minimizing the trust of the market to the positive trend line, the pre-holidays period for the Chinese New Year as well as the numerous fixtures of the recent weeks. In the sale and purchase front a full dish menu has been presented last week; In the handies, the mid 9s built MIRA R has been sold for USD 14,5 million most probably to Koreans. In more modern tonnage, the 22 built PRIMROSE has been sold to Chinese buyers for excess USD 2, million. The 1986 built handymax ZAMRUD after having failed a couple of weeks ago for USD 8,3 million, she has now been confirmed sold for USD 8,6 million this time to Middle Eastern based buyers. Another confirmed deal was the 1998 built handymax AOLUCKY sold for a very firm price of USD 2,5 million though we understand that she was inspected extremely well. The Chinese built supramax VICTORIA III has been reported sold to Italian buyers for a price of USD 28,5 million. Panamax speaking, it seems that 1 year old units should cost around region 28, million. Such levels are backed by the sales of the 1999 built DARYA RADHE and AEOLIAN SPIRIT. In the capes, the 25 built CAPE PIONEER has been reported sold to Greek buyers for USD 54, million. 3 Wet Comments In the VLCC sector, there was an ease of activity with little fresh enquiry that helped charterers push rates downwards. Rates for MEG/ East were reported at WS 117.5, however, tonnage lists are rather tight giving good possibilities for rates to recover. Despite the very firm previous weeks, the Suezmax market witnessed a downward correction in rates, while the tonnage available keeps piling up. Waf/ Usac route has dropped to WS 125 levels from WS 175 previously achieved. On the other hand routes ex Black Sea seem to resist as tonnage lists are tight and there is still a good number of requirements. Activity has been rather slow for Aframaxes in the Med and in combination with the accumulated tonnage lists rates dropped at WS 11 levels. The North Sea and Baltic have been firmer with freight levels reaching at wws 165 and WS 1 respectively. In the Clean sector, the LRs in the MEG have been rather steady with LR2s firming by a few points. Freight levels for the MEG/ Japan route were reported at WS 14 for LR2 and at WS 155 for LR1s. MRs have remained rather quiet while earnings have remained steady in most of the markets. It was a rather MR week in the sales as Norden is reported being the buyer of the three Gan sisters, namely GAN-SHIELD, GAN-SPIRIT and GAN-SABRE for USD 79, million en bloc. In the Suezmaxes, Centrofin in Greece is said to having paid region USD 15, million for the 1994 built AFRICAN RUBY.
