The Cayman Islands lie 480 miles suth f Miami, nestled in the turquise waters f the western Caribbean. The three gentle islands are lcated just 149 miles suth f their clsest Caribbean neighbr Cuba, and 167 miles nrthwest f Jamaica. The ttal land mass f the three islands is 100 square miles. Grand Cayman ccupies 76 square miles; Cayman Brac, 14 square miles and Little Cayman, 10 square miles. 2 Grand Cayman The island itself is made up f 5 main areas. Mving frm the nrthwest tip f the island we are staying in West Bay which is the resrt side f the island where mst f the htels are lcated. Mving suth, Gergetwn is the dwntwn area where the law schl is lcated. T the east is Bdden Twn, the suthern cast and a little mre tranquil. 7 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS TO U.S CITIZENS ALL U.S. citizens travelling by air between the United States and the Caribbean, Canada, Mexic, Central and Suth American, and Bermuda, will be required t present a valid passprt. Electricity THE BASICS Electrical current is 110 vlts AC, 60Hz. American style tw-pin plugs are standard. Time Lcal time is GMT -5. (The same as in Tampa) Weather The average temperature in the winter is 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter r summer, the temperature generally stays within the range f degrees. The mnths with the least humidity and lwest temperatures are December thrugh April. Currency /Banks All business including taxis and buses will accept U.S. dllars r Cayman Island dllars. The Cayman Islands has its wn currency, whse basic unit is the dllar. Hwever, there is n need fr visitrs t exchange their US dllars int lcal currency. The US dllar is accepted thrughut the islands at a rate f CI 80 cents. The US dllar equals CI $.80 r, CI$1.00 equals US$1.25. Regular banking hurs are 9: 00 a.m. until 4 p.m. Mnday thrugh Thursday and until 4:30 p.m. n Friday. Students staying at a htel withut Internet service shuld nt despair. Internet cafes are widely available in the Cayman Islands, enabling visitrs t send and receive frm almst anywhere their adventures take them. Hepatitis A vaccinatin is recmmended befre travel. Dengue fever is endemic and ccurs thrughut the year. Medical facilities are relatively gd; there are bth a public and private hspital. The main hspital is lcated in Gerge Twn, Grand Cayman. It basts mdern equipment and facilities. A 24 hur hyperbaric decmpressin chamber is available fr divers and an air ambulance service fr ther emergencies. On nights and weekends, pharmacies are pen n a rtatin schedule. Safety The Cayman Islands has a relatively lw crime rate. Nevertheless, visitrs are advised t take the usual sensible precautins as they wuld anywhere else in respect f their persnal safety and belngings. Transprtatin GETTING AROUND Cab fare frm the airprt t the Sunshine Suites where we are staying is abut $22 U.S. When exiting the airprt, g t the taxi dispatcher and they will give yu a ticket with the rate written n it fr the driver. This rate cvers 1-3 passengers. Mst taxis are minivans that can seat mre than 3 peple, additinal charge fr extra passengers apply. Cabs have a minimum fare f $4 and are usually destinatin based. Bus is the cheaper way t travel. The lcal bus rutes cver the main rads f the island and use small 12 persn mini-buses. The fare is $2 Cayman (CI) r $2.50 U.S. The main bus dept is lcated directly next t the law schl.. Buses run every 15 minutes 6am-midnight. Taxis Taxis are available at Owen Rberts Internatinal Airprt n Grand Cayman and ffer a fixed rate per vehicle r per persn t all pints n Grand Cayman. This infrmatin is available frm the taxi dispatcher at the curb. Htel vans cannt prvide curtesy arrival pickup at the airprt. Taxis are readily available frm all resrts and frm the taxi stand at the cruise ship dck in Gerge Twn. On average, a taxi wuld cst frm US$10 t US$25 depending n what part yu are ging t. 10 Public Transprt System There is a daily bus service which runs frm 6 am until midnight depending n the rute and the day f travel. The bus fare als depends n the rute and varies between CI$1.50 t CI$3.00 per persn. The new bus terminal is lcated adjacent the Public Library n Edward St. in dwntwn Gerge Twn and serves as the dispatch pint fr buses t all districts. There are 38 mini-buses perated by 24 licensed peratrs, serving eight rutes. Daily service starts at 6 a.m. frm the dept and the schedule is as fllws frm Gerge Twn t: * West Bay - every 15 minutes, 6 a.m p.m., Sunday - Thursday; 6 a.m. - midnight, Fri. & Sat. Fare is CI$1.50 each way. * Bdden Twn - Every 30 minutes, 6 a.m p.m., Sunday- Thurs.; 6 a.m. - midnight, Fri. & Sat. Fare is CI$1.50 each way. * East End and Nrth Side - Every hur, 6 a.m. - 9 p.m., Sunday - Thurs. and Saturday. On Friday, buses will perate until after Midnight. Fare: CI$2 each way. There are museums and btanical gardens as well as early settlements and St. Pedr s castle fr histry buffs. Als, yu can send a pstcard frm Hell. There is als a mvie theater playing current releases. Enjy the unique heritage attractins, Batswain s Beach/Cayman Turtle Farm, Pedr Saint James, Queen Elizabeth II Btanic Park and the Natinal Museum. Business hurs and days may vary, but usually restaurants are pen frm 11 am until 10 pm. The exchange rate makes the difference ntewrthy, and travelers shuld ask the restaurant staff which currency the price refers t. Diners shuld nt be surprised t find a service charge f 15 percent added t the bill. Adding the waitstaff's gratuities t the check is a cmmn practice in the Caribbean.

15 BEFORE YOU GO Register yur trip with the US Department Infrm yur bank that yu will be using yur debit and credit cards abrad. Otherwise, yu may nt be able t withdraw mney while traveling. If yu intend t use yur credit card, r debit cards, in the Cayman Islands, yu shuld ntify yur bank (r card issuer) that yu will be traveling t the Caribbean, and the dates f yur travel. Many credit card cmpanies will "blck" credit cards if they see them being used utside the U.S. This can be extremely incnvenient fr yu. Sme credit cards will charge an additinal percentage when yu make purchases while traveling utside the U.S. This charge varies by issuer and may be called a currency exchange fee r a freign transactin fee. If yu expect t use a card while traveling utside f the U.S., lk fr a card that has a currency cnversin methd that is favrable t yu. Make a nte f the credit limit n each credit card that yu bring, and avid charging ver that limit while traveling. Americans have been arrested fr inncently exceeding their credit limit. Ask yur credit card cmpany hw t reprt the lss f yur card frm abrad numbers d nt wrk frm abrad, but yur cmpany shuld have a number that yu can call while yu are verseas. WHAT TO PACK Always try t travel light. Yu can mve mre quickly and will be mre likely t have a free hand. Yu will als be less tired and less likely t set yur luggage dwn, leaving it unattended. Paying fr excess baggage is very expensive. Persnal Items Besides the higher value f the Caymanian dllar, things are expensive n the island. Be sure t pack enugh f all essential items s as t nt have t pay premium prices n the island. This includes tiletries, sunscreen, cleaning prducts, etc. All extra items shuld be in new unpened packages t avid delays in custms. Clthing Bring plenty f beachwear but be sure t wear it nly n the beach. When leaving the beach, cver up. T-shirts and shrts are generally acceptable, but depending n where yu g yu may want t cnsider a few ther styles. Always pack with a mind t light clthing, as yu will be in a trpical climate, breathable clthes are best. Remember that the Cayman Islands are a little bit cnservative, especially when it cmes t dress, and that light, trpical clthing is best.
