1 - GENDERED STATISTICS - Women on Public Sector s and Committees in Jamaica JAMAICA AND THE EASTERN Prepared for Friedrich Ebert Stifung (FES) Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean by visiting intern, Mira Krause, March
2 - PART I - The following report covers 287 Public Sector s and Committees/Teams approved by Cabinet as at 5 January The underlying data for the analysis is based on a report of the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Finance and Planning, February In respect of the report, the following should be noted: 1. There are instances where the appointments predate the current Administration. These appointments date back to 2008; 2. For completeness, the report includes boards that have expired. In these cases, the Cabinet Office is not in a position to state whether the members were asked to continue serving beyond the expiry date as no further submissions were made to Cabinet regarding these boards; 3. There are also instances where the expiry dates for the boards were not specified at the time of appointment; 4. It is likely that the report contains names of persons who have resigned from boards. In these cases, notice of the resignations may not have been brought to the attention of Cabinet; 5. There are boards whose appointments have been facilitated by a particular Ministry, however, in the normal course of their operations they do not report to said Ministry; and 6. For some Committees/Teams, given the nature of their activities, no effective and end dates have been listed 1 1 Source: Cabinet Office, Report on Public Sector s and Committes/Teams as approved by Cabinet, 4 February
3 This analysis covers board appointments made under the following Ministries, Departments and Agencies: Cabinet Office; Ministry of Education; Ministry of Finance and Planning; Ministry of Health; Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce; Ministry of Justice; Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Agriculture and Fishery; Ministry of Local Government & Community Development; Ministry of National Security; Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining; Ministry of Tourism & Entertainment; Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing; Ministry of Water, Land, Environment & Climate Change; Ministry of Youth & Culture; and Office of the Prime Minister 3
4 This 2015 analysis of 253 s, out of a total of 287, provides the following results, and takes into account that there was no decisive data concerning the sex of some members of 34 boards (12%). Therefore, they are not included in this analysis boards or 42% have less than 30% female members, vs 54% in boards or 34% have between 31% and 49% female members, vs 34% in boards or 14% have between 50% and 65% female members vs 12% in boards or 10% have more than 65% women. For 2015, in respect of boards with 50% or more female members, these comprise 24% of the total (combining nos. 3 & 4 above).
