This country of unique cultural heritage hosts a rare blend of African, European, and native Taíno Indian influences. Culture Dominicans are proud of their rich heritage, expressed in every aspect of the country s vibrant art, music, dance and cuisine. Language Spanish is the official language of the Dominican Republic, and English is widely spoken. Currency The Dominican currency is the peso (DOP), divided into 100 centavos. U.S. dollars (USD) and credit cards are widely accepted. Climate The tropical climate is very consistent and remains a balmy 77ºF (25ºC) throughout the year. The warmest weather runs from May through October, though even in cooler months, it s still warm enough to swim. Hurricane season lasts from June to November. Most of the time, a short tropical rain during the day will cool off the heat and bring the sun out again. Government Since 1966, the Dominican Republic has had a stable, representative, democracy. Time Zone The Dominican Republic falls within the Atlantic Standard Time Zone, but doesn t follow Daylight Savings Time.
