4 September 23, 2017 Christ Church Worshippers have been coming to the site of Christ Church since The original structure was a log chapel of ease of St. Anne s Church, Annapolis, which was replaced in 1811 by the Old Brick. In 2011, the church celebrated its 200th anniversary with completed renovations to the Old Brick that included restoration of the church bell and other improvements, bringing Old Brick closer to its historic appearance. Christ Church was the first local congregation to approve the proposal for the Columbia Cooperative Ministry. Power lines Starting in the mid-1960s, utility companies came under fire for the increasing occurrence of blackouts or brownouts. In 1965, a blackout affected the Northeast states and into Ontario, Canada. The timing and proximity of this blackout may have influenced the decision to have the majority of Columbia s power lines buried underground, eliminating to the maximum extent possible the need for poles along roads and highways. Jackson Pond Jackson Pond was originally named Hittman Pond. Hittman Associates was authorized by the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration and the Office of Water Resources Research to carry out programs to study the feasibility of small storage reservoirs throughout an urban community as a means of stormwater management control. The management of stormwater that began with the Hittman project is as important today as it was 50 years ago. Jackson Pond is in the Patuxent River Watershed. What happens at the pond influences what happens in the Chesapeake Bay. Street names April Wind Circle is a relatively new street name, resolving a controversial issue that had long dogged the residents of Coon Hunt Court. In 1969, some original residents felt that the name was in poor taste and inquired if anything could be done about it. The Rouse Company initiated a process to change the name, but it is a mystery why a name change never occurred at that time. In 2012, the issue came up again, this time resulting in the name being changed. In keeping with the theme of Thunder Hill street names, April Wind is the title of an Andrew Wyeth painting. Cooke Cemetery George Cooke and some of his family members are buried in this small graveyard linking the area s agrarian history to modern day Columbia. George Cooke farmed 500 acres and kept a diary of daily activities from The diary is considered to be one of the most complete surviving personal records of an antebellum Maryland planter, according to the National Agricultural Library located in Beltsville, Maryland. Renew. Rehab. Replace. In 2016, the neighborhood enhancement advisory committee in Oakland Mills initiated a series of workshops for homeowners to provide design options for home renovations. Titled Renew. Rehab. Replace., they focus on updating aging homes to modernize exterior aesthetics, address aging-in-place concerns, and offer new thoughts on lawns and gardens. Mid-century modern homes can be made new again with large and small renovation projects. Lake Elkhorn Lake Elkhorn was designed to provide stormwater management for the 3.8 square mile watershed of the Elkhorn Branch of the Little Patuxent River. Careful consideration was made so that the lake and its components would blend into the existing landscape, and the surrounding wooded areas would be preserved as much as possible. The lake was created by building an earth-filled dam, a concrete spillway, a holding pond and a silt pond. Efforts continue to mitigate runoff and manage stormwater.
