2 Easier Access Program Wide Committed to making all stations accessible by stations are accessible Working with the Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit on effective design Includes elevators, sliding doors, fare-gates, accessible ramps and other features that will improve mobility for all transit riders 2

3 Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit (ACAT) ACAT Overview Toronto citizens who advise the TTC on difficulties faced by people with disabilities and seniors Recommends the elimination of barriers to accessible public transit in the City of Toronto ACAT consists of 15 volunteer committee members who are appointed by the TTC Board ACAT s Role Represents the needs and concerns of persons with disabilities and seniors who use public transit services provided by the TTC. Advises the TTC on the provision of accessible public transit. Advises the TTC on necessary policy issues for services which pertain to the interests of persons with disabilities and seniors. Supports TTC staff in consulting, educating, and advising persons with disabilities, seniors, and the community at large. Subcommittees Design Review, Service Planning, Communications, and Wheel-Trans Operations Advises TTC on priority and plans for Easier Access projects 3

4 Easier Access Project Background Construction underway: St Clair West Coxwell Woodbine Dupont Ossington Station is scheduled to be accessible at end of 2016 Construction began in July,

5 Commitments during Construction Maintain customer access to Ossington station at all times Sequence work in phases to reduce impact to the community Provide street sweeping services and dust mitigation Public informed about related transit changes Reduce noise as much as possible when night work required 5

7 Easier Access Improvements Barrier free path to all levels of the station including installation of: Two elevators to access eastbound and westbound platforms Accessible fare gates Three automatic sliding doors Improved signage including wayfinding CCTV Security cameras Upgrade station power 7

13 Elevator 2 (E2) Laneway Construction completed Construction work complete: Excavation complete Protected mural (Network Daycare) Cut pavement and retaining wall, and removed concrete using jack hammers Completed piling and placement of steel beams and concrete Poured concrete followed by backfilling Reinstated laneway pavement surface Laneway access to daycare was maintained during construction Work to be completed: Install elevator cab and finishes from within the station 13

21 Scott Eunson Artist s Statement I appreciate the clean, straightforward aesthetic of the original Ossington station design, and I propose to create a number of installations that populate the vast tile grids of the station walls, creating a finer scale and texture that references history, growth and movement The Particles will act as an informal way-finding system, responding to the need for visual cues to navigate the station, hinting at paths and giving the spaces a sense of flow and visual interest. 21

23 Jury s Statement " The jury was impressed with the thorough research that the artist conducted to develop his proposal; considered together with his past public art projects, we felt great confidence in his abilities to achieve his intended goals. He made a careful study of material choices, the station s wayfinding, existing signage, colours and architectural details, and the flow of movement throughout it. We liked that the work engages passengers that regularly use the station, as well as those that pass through it. The artist s hands-on production plan is highly cost efficient, allowing for an artwork of considerable scope, within the budgetary allowance. The simplicity of the overarching concept is balanced by the rich and subtle variety of detail in his particle formations, and the pleasing tactile quality of their form and texture. We anticipate that the project will enrich the transit experience for visitors and regular commuters alike. " Heather Nicol, Juror and community member 23
