Valeria has been working at Blue Loon for six years. She started as a ticket collector at the main station. Two years later she was promoted to Northern District Manager. She was a manager for three years. Since last September she has driven a bus on the Southern Route. Valeria has been one of Blue Loon s most conscientious employees. In June, four customers sent letters to Blue Loon praising Valeria and recommending her for the award. Two passengers described how helpful she was, and two others wrote that she is always smiling and very courteous at her job. Valeria was presented with a gold watch and, in October, she will have a three-day holiday at the company s cottage on Lake Pleasant. In an interview, Valeria said that she loves her job and appreciates her company s confidence in her work. Read each question carefully. Line: Louisbourg Louisbourg is a historic Canadian town on the east coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. It was founded in 1713 during the French colonization, and it quickly became a substantial town and seaport. Unlike most settlements in New France, Louisbourg relied little on agriculture. Instead the export of fish, mainly cod, paid for almost all of the colony s supplies. From its fishing base, Louisbourg began to develop into a major sea port. In 1740, the population of Louisbourg was Louisbourg was also an important military base. In 1719, construction began on stone fortifications along the seawall. By 1740, stone walls circumscribed the entire city. The three-storey King s Bastion Barracks, built in 1745, was once the biggest building in the New World. The building contained the governor s 10 room apartment and a military school with trainee s sleeping quarters. Today Louisbourg is a small, but wealthy, farming village on the opposite side of the harbour to where the old fort stands. The Fort of Louisbourg became a national historic site in Parks Canada, in 1961, started extensive reconstruction based on historical records. Part of the walls, the King s Barracks, several streets with homes, shops, and taverns were rebuilt in precise detail. The reconstruction of Louisbourg is a major tourist site on Cape Breton Island. Therefore, it is an important contributor to Nova Scotia s economy. In addition, it has been used occasionally as a model for the reconstructing of historic sites by museums from around the world.
