30 years Advancing advancing 30 Years of conservation Conservation in Elkhorn SLough Elkhorn Slough Foundation

Elkhorn Slough: Protecting A Watershed Holistic grazing practices on Elkhorn Slough Foundation land help preserve rare native grasslands. From winding tidal creeks to sustainably-managed farmland, the Elkhorn Slough Foundation works to preserve the working landscape of this unique place. Photo by Keith Ellenbogen. The Foundation s conserved lands are enjoyed by many and are now conserved for future generations. Thirty years ago, a group of local citizens worked with the manager of California s first National Estuarine Sanctuary to create a non-profit organization with the goal of producing education, research and community outreach programs in Elkhorn Slough. Today the Elkhorn Slough Foundation has evolved into a land trust that manages nearly 4,000 acres and is the largest landowner in the watershed. Its lands encompass rocky chaparral- covered ridgelines, oak forests, coastal prairies, sand dunes and diverse wetlands, as well as working farms and ranches. The Foundation has created and improved public access to this winding waterway. The Foundation s work often places it in the roles of both caretaker and guardian for the lands it manage. Its Long Valley property is one of the largest unbroken tracts of maritime chaparral and oak woodland in the watershed, but years ago developers had the land slated for major residential development. Sites were staked and bulldozers were on scene, ready to get to work. The Foundation, working with several conservation partners, secured the property before shovels hit dirt, saving one of the last untouched areas in the watershed. This is one of hundreds of stories lived by the Elkhorn Slough Foundation every day. Reflecting on the Elkhorn Slough Foundation s growth over the past 30 years reveals a community on the right path to ensure that this remarkable place will not only be here for future generations, it will be better than it is today. And with a mission to conserve and restore the Elkhorn Slough and its watershed forever, there is still a lot of work on the road ahead.

Thanks, Elkhorn Slough Foundation, for 30 years of conserving one of California s greatest treasures From high above, congratulations on 30 years of conservation that allows our flight guests to see a truly unique and beautiful view like no other place on earth!

Partnering for Change The hallmark of ESF s work over the past three decades has been the development of partnerships with other community organizations, service clubs, churches and neighbors. Over the years, the Elkhorn Slough Foundation has hosted Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church and temple youth groups, student interns from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, UC Santa Cruz, Stanford University, Monterey Peninsula College, Hartnell and Cabrillo Colleges and many other institutions from around the country. We enjoy the volunteer efforts and camaraderie of business and corporate groups wanting to invest their time and energy in making their community a better place by enhancing the slough environment notes ESF Executive Director Mark Silberstein. Seniors groups tour with us and we delight in young visitors discovering the slough. Several Eagle Scout projects grace the slough and the North Monterey County Mother s Club contributed to the building of the only wheelchair accessible path on the shore of the slough. Over thirty years, the Foundation has worked with a diverse range of community members and dozens of organizations and agencies that represent them. As we look ahead, says Mr. Silberstein, we see a deepening of our connections to community and broadening the reach to invite people from far and wide to enjoy the gifts of this special place. Community members reap the rewards of ESF s stewardship, taking home flowers from Foundation farms as souvenirs from a hike. Volunteers from every walk of life, be it interested neighbors, corporate groups, or civic minded youth (like the boy scouts pictured above) pitch in to make the Foundation s work possible.

Exploring Nature with Tomorrow s Leaders Students on field trips to the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve get a big lesson in the scale of life. Not only is there rare and exciting wildlife roaming all around, there are dozens of species that they never knew about invisible to the naked eye to be found in a single drop of water. It s an eye-opening experience that gets many young minds excited to explore the world around them, says Education Coordinator Kenton Parker. It is wonderful to come in to work and nurture a budding love of science in future generations. With the help of passionate educators, one of the Elkhorn Slough Foundation s first accomplishments was developing the early curriculum for the Reserve s Education Program. The Education program is updated as new scientific discoveries are Young scientists learn how to use microscopes, and that even a few drops of water from the slough can hold an abundance of life. made and technology improves, yet the results are the same: students leave the Elkhorn Slough with a new appreciation and sense of wonder for the world around them. Today the Education Program is led by the Department of Fish and Game staff of the Elkhorn Slough Reserve and boasts a state-ofthe-art education lab and a cadre of trained naturalists. The program reaches more than 7,000 students annually, and that number grows as more and more teachers become certified to lead field trips at the Reserve. Every time I hear a child gasp in surprise at the sight of a slithering snake, a squirming shrimp or a hawk swooping at its prey, says Kenton, I smile knowing that this is something the Reserve will do long into the future. The Reserve offers teacher-training workshops for those interested in leading fieldtrips. More information about these workshops can be found at ESF s Scholarship for Exploration The Elkhorn Slough Foundation awarded eleven students a scholarship to Camp SEA Lab s Elkhorn Slough and You! summer camp program this summer. In this weeklong day camp students discover native species, see plankton under microscopes, experience up-close encounters with marine life and help restore rare wetland habitat. The Elkhorn Slough Foundation Conservation Education Scholarship for The Les Strnad Award honors Les Strnad s contributions to science education and wetland conservation in Monterey County. Les helped establish the National Estuarine Research Reserve and co-founded Camp SEA Lab, a program that fosters life-long excitement and scientific understanding about our coasts and oceans for youth, families and teachers. By learning about Elkhorn Slough through this scholarship, the students gain a sense of responsibility for the watershed and appreciation for the work done to protect this vital environment. The scholarship helps share the experience of natural exploration with young minds as a tribute to Les contributions to keep the Elkhorn Slough protected for future generations. The Foundation provided scholarships for these students to join Camp Sea Lab and to honor Les Strnad, shown here with the participants. Students of all ages enjoy learning about the Elkhorn Slough from many perspectives whether hiking to ridge top vistas, kayaking, or exploring microscopic life.

Transforming the Landscape: Restoration in Action The Elkhorn Slough Foundation manages some of the most pristine places in the watershed and has restored some of its most damaged lands as well. Its restoration efforts draw on the knowledge of renowned scientists, engage the community and have led to great improvements in natural resources. Restoration projects span the course of years establishing baseline conditions, carefully repairing historic damage and monitoring the restoration site for years. Acting as healer, ESF has mended some deep wounds in the land. On the El Chamisal Ranch, a deep eroded gully nicknamed the Mini- Grand Canyon by foundation staff measured 600 feet long, reaching up to 20 feet deep and 60 feet wide in some places. Inside it were thousands of pounds of plastic, piles of cars and even a school bus. The Elkhorn Slough Foundation removed the junk and trash from the eroded hillside, recontoured the slopes and planted thousands of native plants to hold the soil in place. Today, this land is on its way to be productive habitat. ESF and ESNERR work to protect the rare marshes of Elkhorn Slough by restoring degraded wetlands, addressing many of the problems this scarce habitat faces due to past modifications. The Tidal Wetland Project is a joint effort of the Foundation, the Reserve and more than 100 interested scientists, managers and conservationists. They culminated a six-year study with the restoration of Parsons Slough, a branch of Elkhorn Slough, in This work is reducing the erosion of tidal marshes and sand banks in the slough. The upcoming Tidal Marsh Restoration project will restore dozens of acres of degraded wetlands to the proper elevation for marsh plants to thrive. Over the past thirty years ESF has transformed thousands of acres of land. Today, native plants populate the watershed s hillsides and ridge tops, and invasive weeds are on the decline. Development has been diverted. Hundreds of acres of degraded and eroded land have been brought back to productive habitat. Streams, ponds and marshes have been restored. Groundwater aquifers have been recharged. Healthy farm and ranchland is contributing to the economy and is protected from development. It s this kind of stewardship that inspired the Nature Conservancy to transfer its ownership of 750 acres of protected land to the Elkhorn Slough Foundation this past September. Projects like these increase the chances that marshes in the estuary will adapt to changing climate, making Elkhorn Slough more resilient in the face of rising sea level. Yet land is not static and a dynamic effort is required to care for it. As stewards of Elkhorn Slough, the Foundation s work includes healing damaged lands and creating a vision for a healthy future. This means balancing both the ongoing economy of a working landscape and sustaining the extraordinary wildlife resources of this unique place. Students from Vanderbilt University come to the Elkhorn Slough for Alternative Spring Break, forgoing beachside parties for the chance to make a difference on the landscape. The California Conservation Corp dig deep to help heal this massive gully. background photo: This feature was a common sight in the Elkhorn watershed before ESF began restoration actions.

Pulling Together: The War on Weeds Expansive vistas of natural landscapes are enjoyed by many, thanks to the eradication of invasive weeds in the area. ESF Stewardship Director Kim Hayes removes invasive plants from the Foundation s protected lands, and works with neighbors to manage invasive species that can easily spread from one property to the next. Volunteers like these girl scouts help the Foundation restore and care for the land, removing invasive plants like jubata grass, French broom, cape ivy and more. When the Elkhorn Slough Foundation made the decision to become a land trust, it was in essence taking a step back to see the big picture. What happens upstream affects the Reserve s lands, the slough, and the marine sanctuary further downstream. To protect these places ESF staff works with landowners throughout the watershed to remove invasive weeds from their properties. Many of the invasive plants in Elkhorn Slough disperse their seeds in the wind, helping them rapidly spread over large areas. They also aggressively hog resources like water and nutrients, causing native plant populations to dwindle. Early detection of invasive species in the area followed by swift eradication can help control how far these plants spread, so the Elkhorn Slough Foundation and the Elkhorn Slough Reserve keep a vigilant eye out for new invaders. Make no mistake: weeds like these can be a serious problem they can quickly carpet a valley, decimating valuable habitat for the rare and endangered species that make the Elkhorn Slough watershed their home and reduce the productivity of farms and ranches. In addition to protecting their own land from weeds like jubata grass, French broom and perennial pepperweed, ESF and ESNERR work to share information with fellow landowners about how these plants both threaten the biodiversity of the watershed s protected lands and impact economic uses of farms and ranches. Through this outreach the Foundation has been able to enlist adjoining landowners in reducing these pest weed infestations. In the past year alone ESF has treated an area equivalent to 250 acres of jubata grass spread over 2,200 acres of land, and over the years thousands of invasive weeds have been removed from the watershed. All of this work has helped maintain Elkhorn Slough as a hot spot for biodiversity and a fertile working landscape. Collaborating with neighbors to find and remove these plants erases the manmade barriers of parcel lines, and in the process keeps the slough healthy.

Healthy Land, Clean Water Sea otters using the Elkhorn Slough as a nursery for their pups depend on clean water. Photo by Keith Ellenbogen. Land management success stories are measured in years, not weeks or months. While it is easy to tally up acquired and restored acres of land, it can be very challenging to detect the impact of conservation on overall health. For aquatic environments like the slough, the quality of the water is key. Many factors affect water quality, such as annual variation in rainfall or increased runoff from neighboring lands. Due to these complications, very few studies verify the direct positive correlation between restoration work and watershed well being. Land trusts nationwide struggle with this challenge, however slough scientists have now measured improvements in water quality in the upper slough following land acquisition and restoration projects undertaken by the Foundation. ESNERR researchers Alison Gee, Kerstin Wasson and John Haskins teased apart changes in water quality due to restoration from those due to other factors using years of data from four different data sets: prior to restoration, following restoration, sites where restoration has occurred, and sites where no restoration happened. Elkhorn Slough is one of the few areas nationwide where there is sufficient data to conduct this sort of analysis. The research study examined two major Foundation projects: restoration of the lands draining into the Azevedo wetlands and into Porter Marsh. In both areas, water quality significantly improved after restoration when compared to an adjacent control site where no restoration had occurred. Reserve Researchers also investigated the water quality implications of managing tide gates, revealing that water quality dramatically improved during periods when culverts or tide-gates allowed more tidal exchange than in periods when they strongly limited tidal exchange. Study co-author Kerstin Wasson concludes long-term monitoring data, made possible by strong partnerships and dedicated volunteers, have taught us that extensive restoration near wetlands combined with wise management of water control structures can improve water quality to support the rich estuarine biodiversity of Elkhorn Slough. ESF s land acquisition and restoration projects have directly translated into improved water quality. The Foundation and Reserve s combined forward thinking and dedication to their long-term missions have made a measurable, positive difference. Snowy egrets, great egrets and great blue heron are some of the many water birds that use the Elkhorn Slough as a migratory stopover or permanent home. Decades of water quality data have been analyzed to show that water near ESF s conserved lands are significantly cleaner than before acquisition and restoration.

A Haven for Wildlife More than 340 bird species have been identified in and around Elkhorn Slough, with seasonal counts of tens of thousands of individuals. But it s not the quantity of birds that makes the watershed special it s the diversity. And not just of birds there are species of every sort crawling, swimming, growing and flying throughout Elkhorn Slough. The waters there host dozens of Southern sea otters foraging for clams and raising their pups. The Sea Otter Research and Conservation (SORAC) program at the Monterey Bay Aquarium releases rescued sea otters in the Slough, where its shallow marsh inlets are used as a nursery. Over 100 species of fishes also use the slough habitats, including as a nursery its quiet waters, full of eelgrass, provide a perfect shelter for eggs and larvae of many species. A look in the freshwater ponds on the Reserve and surrounding hills will reveal Santa Cruz long-toed salamanders or California red-legged frogs. The Slough is one of only a handful of known locations inhabited by these beautiful (and threatened) amphibians. While you might think of charismatic fauna when you hear endangered species, the term also refers to flora, like the Santa Cruz tarplant. You ll find this plant on California native grasslands and coastal prairie habitat at Elkhorn Slough. Its aroma has been described as a tangerine and Christmas tree blend. At one time it could be seen and smelled throughout the bay area, but today it is found only in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties 99% of its native grassland habitat has disappeared in the past 200 years. And of course there are the birds. You ll find endangered western snowy plovers, the recently delisted brown pelican and so many more. With so much to see, it s easy to understand why Elkhorn Slough was named by USA Today Magazine as one of the country s top ten places to see wildlife. The Elkhorn Slough provides healthy habitat to more than 340 resident and migratory bird species. 15 Uncovering the Mysteries In 1982 the Elkhorn Slough Foundation was established to assist the newly formed Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ESNERR), and part of that effort has supported scientists working at the Reserve. In 1988 the Foundation helped launch the Slough Water-Monitoring Program, which has measured water quality at 24 sites throughout the slough over the past 24 years. And in 1983 the Foundation worked with the Nature Conservancy to establish the Elkhorn Slough Volunteer Program, blazing the path for the contribution of tens of thousands of volunteer hours that have not just made the slough a better place but played a hands-on role in the research here. Volunteers assist researchers by conducting bird counts, surveying fish populations, monitoring marine mammals and gathering meaningful data in countless other ways. In its role as a fiscal agent, ESF provides critical support that offers flexibility to Reserve researchers. ESNERR scientists have more time to focus on estuarine monitoring and research because ESF works so efficiently behind the scenes, streamlining our grants management, says Research Coordinator Kerstin Wasson. The Foundation s role may have changed from the early days much of the effort focuses on its work as a land trust but ESF still provides important administrative support for Reserve researchers. Together the Elkhorn Slough Foundation and Reserve create an effective conservation partnership for the Elkhorn Slough, with a shared goal of protecting, researching, restoring and sharing the diversity of the watershed with others.
