1 July 23, 2018 Northern Rockies Regional Municipality Fort Nelson First Nation By Re: Letter of Support for the Fort Nelson Community Forest Partnership To Whom It May Concern; I am writing On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Fort Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce in support of the Community Forest proposed in partnership by the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality and Fort Nelson First Nation. The Fort Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce represents over 200 businesses in the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM). Located at Mile 300 of the Alaska Highway in the NE corner of BC we are the provinces first and only regional municipality and service a land base of over 85,000 km 2 or approximately 10% of the Province of British Columbia. The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality has had no active forest industry for the past 10 years and it is essential that we gain local control over our resource. Community Forests can be important economic drivers in local economies. We appreciate Premier Horgan s commitment to tying manufacturing and resource extraction to communities and fully support the development of a Community Forest within the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. 4 egional Municipality The Fort Nelson Community Forest A Partnership Between the Fort Nelson First Nation and the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality Background: The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM) has a long-held interest in obtaining a Community Forest. Similarly, the Fort Nelson First Nation (FNFN) have strong cultural, spiritual, and economic interests in the management of areas within their traditional territory. As a result, these two parties have come together to form a Partnership to acquire a Community Forest in the Fort Nelson TSA. In a March 17, 2017 letter to the parties, then Minister Steve Thomson announced that Government was willing to offer up to 185,000 m 3 per year of timber volume to support the partner's interest in acquiring a CFA. Since that time the Partners have worked diligently toward that goal. Over the 18 months the Partners have work collaboratively with district and regional Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (FLNRORD) staff to identify a suitable operating area for the Community Forest (COMFOR).
