5 Wearability: The Key to Compliance HexArmor safety eyewear was developed as a natural extension of our core mission: to send every worker home safe, every day. To accomplish this, we knew the safety eyewear we designed and manufactured needed to be a product workers would want to wear PPE that wouldn t get in the way because we all know the safest PPE is the PPE that s worn. 6 Coatings Hydrophobic vs. Hydrophilic For fundamentally different coatings that outperform anything on the market while maintaining their performance over time, HexArmor s chemically engineered anti-fog technology absorbs moisture droplets as they hit the lens, eliminating fog. This moisture absorbing process is known as hydrophilic and is found in all HexArmor s anti-fog coatings. Taking this process one step further, HexArmor uses specialized dualaction hydrophilic coatings for extreme applications that cause moisture to spread on the lens and then absorb, eliminating fog permanently. Traditional coatings in the safety eyewear market use hydrophobic technology. This technology causes moisture to spread as it hits the lens, eliminating fog. Although effective for a short period, hydrophobic anti-fog coatings are detergent based and wash off over time. This type of shortterm fog protection leads to compliance issues and eyewear being treated as disposable. 7 Flow-Coating Flow-coating is profoundly different than traditional dip-coating methods used by other safety eyewear brands. Dip-coating applies an identical coating to both sides of the lens and can sacrifice the quality of one protective property over the other. Traditional dip coatings can either be scratch-resistant or anti-fog. The combination of the two compromises the performance of each. Flow-coating technology has allowed HexArmor to pioneer four completely new coating combinations in the Americas that include permanent anti-fog on the interior of the lens and either a scratch-resistant hard coat or permanent anti-fog on the exterior of the lens. This specialized dual-coating process is exclusive to HexArmor and is a first for the PPE eyewear industry in the Americas. In the Pulp and Paper industry, issues around safety eyewear fogging up becomes more frequent. Machine areas are high in heat and humidity, causing safety glasses to fog up in a matter of seconds. This results in workers having to take their glasses off to see, subjecting them to potential hazards and compliance issues. 17 Rough Around the Edges (Abrasion) The edges of raw materials or sheets of plywood and OSB can wear through the palm material on an inferior glove very quickly, especially when edges are rough after being cut. HexArmor builds superior abrasion resistance into our heaviest duty gloves for enhanced durability. Leather has been a proven performer when it comes to abrasions, and we rely on the highest quality leather to provide durability in many of our gloves lines. Also, adding patches of SuperFabric to other materials, like the SteelLeather 5033, can increase the abrasion resistance significantly and extend the life of the glove. Get a Grip Having a solid grip on tools and equipment results in safer, more efficient work. Changing wet or oily saw blades without a confident grip can result in slippage that causes punctures and lacerations. 18 CASE STUDY The Right Solution for Maintenance Mechanics Change-overs are a very common part of maintaining production lines at paper mills. Slitter blades must be adjusted or replaced daily in order to meet customer specifications for finished goods. HexArmor had been working with a large international provider of packaging and paper products to find a solution for lacerations that their mechanics were experiencing during routine maintenance on production lines. The company had been using a Spectra blended cut-resistant glove for years, yet hand injuries were still present, and the mechanics did not like how the gloves bulky fit got in the way of handling smaller parts. HexArmor s team of safety advisors recommended Chrome Series gloves with SuperFabric for mechanics changing slitter blades because it offers 360-degree cut protection. After about a month of use, a mechanic came in contact with one of the slitter blades while performing a change-over. The blade cut through the synthetic material on the back of the Chrome Series glove. While the glove itself was damaged, the worker was not injured due to the high level of protection provided by the SuperFabric material underneath the surface of the glove. Had the worker been wearing a competitive product, he would have been injured, and the company would have incurred thousands of dollars in costs associated with the injury. 29 How to Properly Care for Your Gloves Improper glove care can shorten the life of your PPE. It can also lead to dermatitis, decreased dexterity, loss of protective abilities, and odor. Glove care refers not only to laundering but also proper storage, routine glove checks, and knowledge of materials and their particular strengths and weaknesses. Because there are so many different work gloves on the market, experienced safety managers should be aware of what workers gloves are made of and how they will stand up to the applications they re being used for. Common glove materials include nylon, spandex, leather, cotton, SuperFabric *, Kevlar, and knit fibers. Each of these materials has a certain way it needs to be cared for. Often there is a blending of the materials, making proper care even more crucial. Cleaning + Care Most gloves and arm and body PPE are machine washable.
