2016 ROUGH RIDER CAMPOREE SCHIFF SCOUT RESERVATION FRIDAY MAY 13, 2016 SUNDAY MAY WEEKEND GUIDE VERSION.03
WELCOME: In celebration of the upcoming summer Olympics we have crafted feats of speed, strength and teamwork. This year s camporee promises to be action packed. Square off patrol against patrol for ribbons and bragging rights in the great events and competitions listed below! Register today for only $10 per person (Registration ends May 6) - Sorry no on-site registrations. Please read this packet carefully. There are items listed that are needed by your Scouts and/or their patrol for the weekend s events. MEDICAL Current Parts A & B medical form with parent signature is required for all attendees including Webelos attendees. Be sure all inoculations are up to date. Marking medicals as Up to Date is not acceptable. CAMPFIRE Each Patrol should plan to prepare one skit, song or cheer to be performed on Saturday night. Come to the campfire rehearsed and ready to perform. The item performed must be appropriate for the occasion (no vulgarity, violence or other gray areas will be permitted). Webelos: Webelos are encouraged to attend as guests of your Troop for the day. New this year is the ability for Webelos to camp as your guest with the Troop. There are however some stipulations: 1. Your troop is responsible for the care and feeding of Webelos. 2. Webelos MUST camp with a parent. 3. Webelos (and parent) pay the normal $10 per person fee. Please make arrangements with any day tripping Webelos to meet at your site. There will not be anyone at registration on Saturday to meet with incoming scouts. Wristbands will be given to each troop at check in for day trippers and late arrivals Weekend Help: What makes a truly fun camporee is how much effort goes into it, and we count on the Troops to provide volunteers to lend the staff a hand, particularly at the scored events. Our volunteers always tell us how fulfilling it is when they see how the boys enjoy it. Even a couple of hours helps. Assignments will be announced at Friday evening Staff meeting.
CAMPoree events: Station 1: Boat/Slalom Competition Teams build a boat out of Legos and must float it down the river with the aid of blowing through straw. All materials are provided. Each team will receive a set of legos, a Styrofoam block and set of straws. Team must construct boat utilizing all the legos provided. When ready the team will break into groups along the course and provide the wind power through the straws to move the boat through their part of the course. Points are awarded based on time to complete the course. Judges are the final arbiters. Station 2: A-Frame Race Teams build an A-Frame from provided materials and must lash the horizontal beam (the top is screwed together) using diagonal lashings, then complete a short course where one scout stands on and controls the A-Frame and other scouts with the aid of guide ropes keep the A-Frame upright. This is a timed event, beginning from the tying of the lashings to the completion of the course. Time penalties are added for: 1. Incorrect diagonal lashings 2. Lashings that do not hold through the course 3. If the A-Frame top touches the ground 4. If the scout on the A-Frame touches the ground Judges are the final arbiters. Station 3: Obstacle Course In this timed scored event each patrol must complete each of the presented activity tasks including walking with team skis, shooting NERF guns at targets, participating in a 3-legged race, and shot put. Some included activities act as score reducers or multipliers. Judges are the final arbiters.
Station 4: Be Prepared Bag Each patrol must complete 8 random challenges in this timed event. Patrol members line up and individually run to the bag of challenges and randomly draw a challenge. If the patrol member can complete the challenge successfully they score a point, if they cannot or choose not to then they put the challenge card back into the bag and join the end of the line. The winning team completes all 8 challenges in the least amount of time. Random bag of challenges can include anything including, knots, scout questions, safety questions, and physical challenges all chosen at random. Judges are the final arbiters. Station 5: Specialty Extras This year we are including a non-competition area which will include patch trading, Dutch oven cooking demo and amateur radio. Patch Trading: Patch trading will include patch vendors (TBD) who will be selling patches, presentations by patch enthusiasts, and an area for scout only trading (no selling), so encourage your scouts to bring some cool patches to trade. Dutch Oven Cooking: Scouts and Adults will see and taste Dutch oven meal samples. Hear from Dutch oven enthusiasts, and learn that your Dutch oven can be used for more than just dump cake. Note: Because of the variety of presenters make the assumption that nuts, eggs, seafood and wheat may be used. Those with such allergies should avoid tasting samples. Amateur Radio: Did you know that Schiff Scout reservation has an amateur radio room? Learn a bit about Amateur radio, and how to participate in activities while camping at Schiff. If you would like to take part as a presenter for any of these specialty extras please speak with Dave Lumerman (dave@lumerman.com)
Additional Competitions: Dessert competition Your challenge is to create a yummy dessert to be judged by the Camporee judges. Dessert must be delivered to Hickox Hall for judging at 5:45pm on Saturday evening. Entries will be judged on taste (50%), difficulty in preparation (30%), presentation (10%) and creativity (10%). Each patrol can submit an entry. Boys must have participated in the majority of the preparation. Prizes for top 3 desserts. Entry in competition counts towards scout spirit award. Olympic flag competition The Olympic flag submission should mimic a country flag, must include Troop number, and must be attached to a standard 1-inch diameter broom handle. Olympic flags entered into the competition must be delivered to the flag stand (outside Hickox Hall) before morning colors and will remain on display for the weekend. The ideal flag is 2 feet by 1 1/2 feet. Your dimensions may vary. Entries will be judged based on creativity (60%), theme appropriateness (30%), and adherence to the required dimensions (10%). Entry in competition counts towards scout spirit award. Mascot competition Every good country has a mascot. The United States has the Bald Eagle, Finland has the Brown Bear, Greece has the Phoenix, and Canada has the Beaver. Show your scout spirit and travel from event to event with your mascot and present the little fellow for judging at 5:45pm at Hickox Hall. Top 3 will be voted on at the campfire. Entry in competition counts towards scout spirit award. Now for the fine print. Live animals, scouts, adults and little sisters dressed up, as mascots are not acceptable. Mascots need to be constructed (at home) out of any appropriate materials (nothing on fire or hazardous), and should be of adequate size to be viewed by the campfire attendees. They can represent any character, live or mythical.
Color vs Color When arriving each patrol will be assigned a color. During the day s events each patrol amasses patrol score, which is then combined to form a point total for the entire color area. The color area with the best score is awarded a do-dangly for each of the included patrols. SCOUT SPIRIT AWARD Don t forget to show your scout sprit! Scout spirit encompasses attendance at events and competitions, how troops and patrols interact within each other, other campers and staff all weekend. The Martha Lambert trophy will be awarded on Sunday morning.

General Instructions CHECK-IN Units will check-in at the main parking lot on Friday evening. It is expected that all Troops will be checked in and ready to participate in time for the opening ceremony on Saturday morning at 8:30 am. CHECK-OUT Before a Unit may leave on Sunday, it must check-out with the administrative staff. All units should attempt to be ready to leave camp by 11am on Sunday. Each campsite will be inspected and, in the spirit of Scouting, it is expected to be in a better condition than it was found. MEALS AND FOOD SUPPLIES Units are responsible for the preparation of all meals, to be eaten in their campsites. All food should be in closed containers. PARKING Parking of all cars will be at the direction of the staff. You will be able to bring only one vehicle past the parking lot for 15 minutes; and only to drop off or load gear. This will be a timed event. Time tickets will be given out to each car. Abusing the privilege will lead to your not being allowed to pick up gear on Sunday, and you will be forced to haul it out by hand. NO cars may remain in camp unless specifically approved by staff for appropriate reasons. TRAILERS This year we will be allowing a limited amount of trailers in site placed at the end of road near Hickox Hall. Trailers must be placed off the road and detached from vehicle. They must remain in place for the duration of the weekend. As with all gear, you are responsible of securing gear, and should be predominately closed and tidy. If you have a trailer, and want to bring it in to camp, sign up early and indicate you have the trailer on your form. We will NOT be moving sites around on check in to accommodate. ACCIDENTS All accidents must be reported to the EMT who will be serving on staff. An accident report should be completed by the Unit leader and forwarded to the EMT. Steve and Janice Daves cell phone number is SERVICE TROOPS There will be various responsibilities for the Camporee, ranging from the FUN (building the Council Fire, and morning colors) to the more mundane (policing central areas for garbage, spot check latrines, etc.). We would appreciate it if each Troop would volunteer to take one of these responsibilities. In an effort to keep the camp cleaner than in the past, we request that units collect garbage during the weekend.
RELIGIOUS SERVICES Rough Rider District will hold religious services on Saturday evening, which all units are expected to participate in. The religious committees may be holding additional religious services. Announcements will be made at Friday cracker barrel as to where services will be held. Dress for services in Class A. Anyone not attending religious services is to remain in site and do quiet activities. Quiet time is to be strictly enforced so as not to disrupt religious services. UNIFORMS Class A uniforms should be worn during religious service and at all ceremonies. Class B uniform is expected (this does not mean no uniform). Show your scout spirit and wear your colors during the day! ATTENDANCE Once checked in, all Units and individuals must remain in camp. The administrative staff must be directly notified if anyone must leave camp. TAPS After Taps and before Reveille, all Scouts should remain in their campsites and remain quiet, so as not to disturb others. SCOUT COURTESY/SCOUT SAFETY All Scouts and Scouters must be respectful to the others in the camp. Use common sense. Do not enter another Unit s campsite unless invited to do so. Treat others the way you would expect to be treated. Any intentional act by a Scout that injures another Scout or causes any damage of any kind will result in that Scout and his Unit being asked to leave the camp immediately. Quiet time during religious services is to be respected. TOUR PLAN Rough Rider District of the Theodore Roosevelt Council, BSA sponsors this event. Units should file a tour plan and bring a copy for check-in DIRECTIONS TO SCHIFF SCOUT RESERVATION Camp address: 1606 Wading River Manor Road,Wading River N.Y LIE east to exit 69.
