2 Deblister-RX Quick Start training sheets Page 1 Handle to turn and push blister card through Deblister-RX There are several rollers designed to push out the medication from the blister card. 1. Above is a side view of the DeBlister-RX showing the handle used to turn the upper roller. This roller is turned in a counter clockwise direction which causes the upper rubber roller to push the medication blister card throught the DeBlister-RX. To the right is one of the optional rubber rollers. 2. Above is the black plastic handle which will allow you to pull the shaft out from the upper roller. The shaft holds the upper and lower roller together. 3. The steel shaft shown here is being pulled out so that the rubber roller can be removed for cleaning, or to change the position of the lower roller rings. 4. This is a view of the yellow roller side shafts which must fit into the matching grove on the left and right gear collars. 5. The roller can be removed by pulling it upward, after the steel shaft has been removed.

Above are the steel disk used to support the blister card material between each medication. The numbers are used to record where each steel disk should be for each different blister card. 8. The small groves are design to allow you to precisely move each steel disk slightly to the left or to the right. This is necessary so that the disk can provide the proper pressure against the blister card where needed. 9. The disk are positioned in the spaces between the medication blister cavity, so that as the blister card is pulled through the rollers, the medication can be pushed out without crushing the medication. 10. The transport blade is designed to allow the blister card (after the medication has been pushed out) to go over and past the area where the medications are falling through. The transport blade should be touching a disk spaced equally from each edge of the blister card. 11. By pressing the button on each black handle of the transport blade, you can move the handle and then move the transport blade to the left or right.

4 Machine Description The DeBlister-RX is designed to remove medications from most any push through package up to 120 mm wide by passing the blister through a pair of rollers. The upper roller is rubber coated and solid. The lower roller has a series of moveable disks that can be arranged according to the spaces between the medication so that the medications can be pushed through by the upper roller. Operating speed is up to 20 blisters per minute that can be removed depending upon the blister size and the operator experience. The DeBlister-RX is constructed from anodised aluminum panels and stainless steel components. It is maintenance free and easily cleaned. Installation Carefully unpack the machine and clean to pharmacy standards. The DeBlister-RX should then be ready for immediate operation, as the DeBlister-RX requires no electrical or air connections. Operation Method A for blister packs when the settings have not be recorded The DeBlister-RX has two rollers through which the blister is passed to remove the medication. To set up the machine for a new medication, carry out the following steps: 1. Lift the clear plastic cover. 2. Remove the upper roller by pulling out the shaft. (Note the hand positions in Picture 1. Also note Picture 2 upper roller removed). 3. Place the medication blister package underneath the stainless steel edge guide to the left as shown in Picture 3 and 4. Adjust the disk on the lower roller so that they are in line with the spaces or out side edge of the blister pocket that the medication is in. A disk is not needed for the left most edge of the blister pocket of the medication blister card. To change the position of a disk, lift it free from the groove that it is in, and glide it into the required groove. Although the disk appear to be loose, they will be held firmly in place when the upper roller is replaced. 4. Carefully replace the upper roller taking care not to dislodge the disk from the grooves as twisted disk may damage the medications. 5. Align the Transport blades behind the blister at the rear of the DeBlister-RX. Position the blades close to the edges of the blister at about 1/4 of the blister card width from each edge of the card. Each Transport blades should almost touch a disk, and should be right behind a disk (inline with the disk). If you do not have the Transport blades in the proper position, the blister card could get jammed. The Transport blades are easily adjusted by pulling out and turning the lever, sliding the blade to the desired position, and then re-tightening the black lever.

6 Disk or rings Lower roller blister card support Edge Guide Blister Pocket Blister Pocket edge The disk must be between each blister pocket edge as shown above. If the disk are improperly placed, the medications in the blister pockets may get crushed. The left hand side of the medication blister card does not need a disk to the left of the blister pocket. The lower roller blister card support gives the left hand side of the medication blister enough support. Edge Guide Medication blister card The upper roller secures the disk so that they do not move. The disk must be placed in the lower roller grooves so that the disk do not wiggle as the upper roller is being turned.

7 6. Close the top cover and replace the plastic drawer below to catch the medications as they are pushed out of the blisters. 7. The DeBlister-RX is now ready for operation. Align the blister package against the stainless steel edge guide (Picture 3 and 4 ). Push the medication blister card through the rollers by turning the handle counter clockwise. Continue to hold the medication blister card against the guide edge as the blister card goes through the DeBlister-RX. This will help prevent the blister card from moving while in the deblister operation. If the blister card were to move, the medications could get crushed. The medications will fall into the plastic drawer, and the empty blister will be ejected over the transport blades. The recovered product should be inspected for any signs of damage before continuing with the deblistering. If the is any damage to the medications, this probably means that the disk are not in the proper position, or that the blister card moved away from the edge guide as it was being pulled through the BeBlister-RX. Record the correct settings on the forms in the back of this training booklet. The next time you deblister that medication, you can easily reset the disk to the correct settings as in Method B below. Method B for medication blister cards that have been previously recorded 1. Lift up the top cover. 2. Remove the upper roller by withdrawing the metal shaft. 3. Move the disks on the roller so that the disk are in line with the setting numbers as previously recorded. 4. Replace the upper roller. 5. Set the transport blades. Close the top cover and replace the plastic drawer. The unit is now ready for operation. Cleaning and Maintenance The Deblister-RX should be cleaned using a solution of 70% Ethanol. All parts are removable for cleaning. It is recommended that the lower roller be removed for cleaning after each batch to avoid cross-contamination between products. To do so, first remove the upper roller and loosen the transport blades. The lower roller can then be lifted out from the slots where it normally is. The lower roller should be washed in hot detergent solution and dried at an elevated temperature. Or you could use a cotton cloth. Try to remove moisture from the lower roller. The upper roller should be washed in cold detergent solution and rinsed in 70% Ethanol solution. The upper roller needs to be cleaned once per day.

8 Tips for Easier Operation 1. Always ensure that the plastic drawer is in place before feeding a blister through the roller. 2. The results will be best if long capsule-shaped blister pockets are presented to the rollers with the narrow end of the pocket first. 3. When feeding the blister between the rollers, make sure that the edge of the blister pocket remains firmly in contact with the guide edge. 4. If there is still damage to the medication, move the gap slightly to the left or to the right between the disk where the medication blister pocket is that would contain the damaged medication. Be sure to record the new settings. 5. If the empty blister card jams upon leaving the rollers, check the set-up of the transport blades. The transport blades should not be aligned to the blsiter pockets, but should be aligned to the gaps between the pockets. Check also that the empty blister exiting from the rollers do not catch on the point of the blade. If this occurs, adjust the transport blade so that it is close enough to the disk and cannot catch on the empty blister card. However, do not have the transport blade touching the disk. 6. If the transport blade becomes dislodged from its position on the horizontal shaft, the blister card may be caught on it. The transport blades must be repositioned as shown in Picture 5. The picture shows how to adjust a blade with a 2.5 mm allen key. 7. If some of the medication is only partially emptied from the blister pockets, it may be that the medication is stuck to the blister pocket or the foil through moisture release, or from heat sealing during the original blister medication packaging from the manufacturer. However, it may also be that a different roller is required (a softer one or one with a larger diameter). In some cases, it may be necessary to order a roller with grooves in order to place O rings in the grooves to give added pressure to that particular medication. The decision to order additional rollers, or special rollers depend upon how many of that particular medication you will have to punch out by hand. In other words, if you only use a few of a problem medication per year, you may not order a special roller for that one medication. See Picture 6.
