2 How the BoxBarrier works The BoxBarrier retains water with water. That means it uses it s opponent, a resource always available. This makes it very efficient. The modular flood defence consists of separate elements, which are connected with sealed joints. Each element is covered by a lid before filled with water. Because of its large weight after being filled with water it resist the pressure from the rising water level. Due to the very flexible rubber strip at the front underside, is not dependent on any special underground. The BoxBarrier works on grass, mud, clay, pavement and asphalt. It is no problem to go from one underground to another. Delta Marine Consultants Page 2

3 The Elements of the BoxBarriers The box element is the main piece. After being filled with water it is very heavy and therefore stable enough to resist the waterpressure. The joint piece Keeps the box elements connected. Because it is interlocking it enables a sturdy connection for an effective flood. The lid Gives the box elements more stability at the top. The rubber strip On the underside of the box and joint elements seals the BoxBarrier to the ground and prevents water flow. The rubber strip of the box element and the joint element have to touch in order to be most effective. Delta Marine Consultants Page 3

4 Storage and transportation Due to the stackability it is possible to store several meters of the BoxBarrier on little place. 400 meters of BoxBarrier fit into a conventional 40 feet container. The BoxBarrier should always be stored out of the sun to avoid aging of the material. In an emergency the BoxBarrier is easily put onto a trailer and towed to the place of set up. 5 Assembling the BoxBarrier Installation is very easy and can be done by hand. All it needs are the three elements of the BoxBarrier which are the boxes themself, the joint parts and the lids, and a pump. A crew of six men with two pumps placed on a lorry can install 1000 meters within an hour. The procedure will be explained on the following pages. Delta Marine Consultants Page 5

6 Step one of set up First of all unload the elements and line up the box elements with the joint elements. Spare a lid for every box. The flat side of the box elements must face the water. This is very important to keep it watertight. Delta Marine Consultants Page 6

7 Step two of set up Fit the joint part into the space provided for it on the side of the box. In order to be watertight it is very important that the side with the out dent shows towards the waterside. That is the side where the box elements are flat. Row up the box elements and the joint elements in that manner. Always make sure that the flat side of the box elements is facing the water and the side with the out dent of the joint elements is facing the water. This is important because it guaranties the rubber strip at the front underside to form a continuous line. Delta Marine Consultants Page 7

8 Step three of set up After lining up and interlocking the box elements with the joint elements and making sure everything is facing the right side put the lids on. Depending on if you want to fill the BoxBarrier from the water- or landside orientate the hole in the lid towards either side. Delta Marine Consultants Page 8

9 Step four of set up The last step for a safe defence line is filling the box elements. This can happen with any water supply, either water from the river, or if it isn t available yet, with tab water. Filling time depends on the water source and the pump. Please be aware that the front side dents out due to the water pressure inside. This is operational and does not influence the safety in any means. The out dent will go back as the water level outside rises. This will let the box elements spill a bit, this also is no threat to you and your properties safety. Delta Marine Consultants Page 9

10 Disassembling After usage we advise to pump out most of the water in the box elements. After emptying the box elements entirely they can be stacked and stored again. A good place to store the joint elements is inside of the box elements. Delta Marine Consultants Page 10

11 Tips and tricks Water supply If you can t fill your BoxBarriers with water from the river or lake yet because it is not easy assessable, you can prefill the box elements with about 30 cm / one foot of tab water and wait for the water to rise until you can use water from the river or lake to fill the box elements entirely. But please do it in time. Storage Please store your BoxBarriers in a shady place and near the location they might be needed. Also store them in a way that they are always easy assessable and ready to use. Water leakage It is mandatory to have a continuous line of rubber sealant at the front bottom side in order for the BoxBarrier to be safe and a good protection for your property. Pump We advise you to use a pump with a flow rate of 20 m 3 /h. Delta Marine Consultants Page 11
