3 The Days of Vikings Farmers, explorers, and merchants. But to some they were considered pirates. Vikings were the Scandinavian warriors of the sea, known as barbarians by those who feared them. Travel with us to the tenth century - to the days of the Vikings! Viking Vernacular Vikings : Clan : Chief : Tribe : Head Chief : Judges : Viking Elders : Boy Scouts with swords and shields and helmets who are registered for the Days of Vikings Camporee and want to have a great time competing in tenth century Norwegian games. 4 Registration While playing on the river bank in the early morning of a hot summer day, a Tenderfoot Scout discovered a clay jar containing a parchment with strange characters. Experts believe it to be in Old Norse. (English Translation) Registration is by patrols. Patrols can not be larger than nine scouts. A troop with ten scouts will register as two patrols. Each patrol must have a patrol leader. Each troop must provide a minimum of two adult leaders. There must be a minimum of one adult leader per ten youth in attendance. Registration is $20 per scout if paid in full before December. Take advantage of the early-bird discount ($5 off) by registering before October. No registrations, changes, or cancellations can be made after 16 December Register on line. 3

5 A note to the Viking Elders (That is you Scoutmasters) Viking Elders, you are welcome to participate in the activities. Your presence is appreciated. If you see something unsafe, you have the right and responsibility to take corrective action. You may take pictures, cheer for the youth, and give encouragement. Now, there are some things you may not do. Don t aid your Vikings in the competitions. Don t give advice, answers, or provide them with any advantage. Let the Head Chiefs be responsible for their tribes. Your role between now and February 9th is to train your Chiefs to lead their tribes. Here are some activities and rank advancements you can help your youth with to prepare them to be at their best at the Camporee. Preparing for the Camporee Vikings, this camporee will take some preparation. Use this section of the guide book to plan your clan meetings in the months leading to the camporee. Have fun, build memories, and take some pictures along the way. Post pictures at Decorating your Boat Every good Viking knows how to handle his boat. But our canoes don t look like viking ships. That part is up to you. With your clan, plan how you will decorate your canoe and bring the materials with you. Clans will have one hour to decorate before the boat races begin. (Note. Please don t use paint or anything that will damage the canoes.) Each clan will provide two oarsmen for the boat race. Oarsmen must be classified as swimmers as described by 1st class requirement 6A. At check-in, the Viking Elder from the Tribe will give the names of the two oarsmen from each Clan who meet this qualification. 4

6 Making a Viking Tent When a ship was no longer suitable for the sea, its parts were converted to make a shelter. Canvas tarps and 2X4 boards can make an adequate Viking tent. Anyone recognize the one on the left? Be creative with yours. 5

7 The Right Apparel How far you want to take this is up to you. Come in full costume, or just bring a sword and shield. (But don t bring any real weapons - that could go bad quickly.) Make it from wood, cardboard, cardboard wrapped in foil It s up to you. You ll look out of place if you re dressed like a 21st century observer. As for headgear, do you want to be authentic or iconic? Historically speaking, Vikings never put horns on their helmets. On the other hand, everyone knows you re a Viking if you do. 6

8 Fire Starting Vikings don t use matches or ferrocerium rods. But they are good at starting fires with Fire-Steels, Fire Drills, and Burning Glass. You can get good at these methods if you practice. Bird s Nest (Tinder Bundle) A bird s nest is made from dry fibrous plants such as dead grass and ground tree bark. When you have a glowing ember, fold it in the bird s nest and blow until the nest ignites. Making a bird s nest: Char Cloth and Punk Wood Vikings used a material made from fungus soaked in old urine called touchwood. Touchwood can hold an ember long enough to ignite your bird s nest. Rather than making touchwood, we will use char cloth or punk wood. Char cloth is made from natural fiber cloth, and punk wood is decomposing wood. The method described here is the same for both. The cloth or wood is heated in an oxygen deprived environment so that it is rid of it s flammable components without burning to ash. The resulting charcoal will hold an ember like the touchwood, and will be used in the three fire started methods described below. Making char cloth: Fire-Steel Flint is a stone harder than steel. When steel is struck against the sharp edge of flint, small pieces of steel are removed and heat up to make a spark. When that spark is caught on a piece of char cloth (or touchwood as in this diagram), it will create an ember that you can transfer to your bird s nest. Fire Drill The hand drill, bow drill, and pump drill are three types of fire drills. In each case, the heat generated between the drill base and the fireboard creates a coal that can be transferred to your bird s nest. Watch these videos for detailed instructions. Then pick one to build. Making a hand drill: Making a bow drill: Making a pump drill: Burning Glass It s not likely you ll find or make burning glass, so a modern-day magnifying glass will have to do. The right kind of fuel and a good amount of patience is the key. Using a magnifying glass: 7

9 Here are rank advancements you can pass off as you prepare for the Camporee. See pages 15 to 16 for advancements you can do AT the camporee. First Aid Tenderfoot 4a. Show first aid for the following: Simple cuts and scrapes Blisters on the hand and foot Minor (thermal/heat) burns or scalds (superficial, or first-degree) Bites or stings of insects and ticks Venomous snakebite Nosebleed Frostbite and sunburn Choking 4b. Describe common poisonous or hazardous plants; identify any that grow in your local area or campsite location. Tell how to treat for exposure to them. 4c. Tell what you can do while on a campout or other outdoor activity to prevent or reduce the occurrence of injuries or exposure listed in Tenderfoot requirements 4a and 4b. 4d. Assemble a personal first-aid kit to carry with you on future campouts and hikes. Tell how each item in the kit would be used. 2nd Class 6a. Demonstrate first aid for the following: Object in the eye Bite of a warm-blooded animal Puncture wounds from a splinter, nail, and fishhook Serious burns (partial thickness, or second-degree) Heat exhaustion Shock Heatstroke, dehydration, hypothermia, and hyperventilation 6b. Show what to do for hurry cases of stopped breathing, stroke, severe bleeding, and ingested poisoning. 1st Class 7a. Demonstrate bandages for a sprained ankle and for injuries on the head, the upper arm, and the collarbone. Orientering 2nd Class 3a. Demonstrate how a compass works and how to orient a map. Use a map to point out and tell the meaning of five map symbols. 8

Tribes, clans, viking youth, and tribe elders generally know their needs better than anyone else. Please bring everything necessary. 9

11 Arriving at Camp Check-in is from 5PM to 7PM on Friday at the north shore beach of Senator Wash in CA. Arrive as a tribe ( troop ). The Head Chief of the tribe ( Senior Patrol Leader ) will make an accounting of tribe members in attendance. The Tribe Elder ( Scoutmaster ) will submit medical forms. All registered participants will receive a wristband and the tribe will be assigned a campsite. Have your camp site set up before the 8PM campfire program. 10

13 Viking Games and Contest Rules We will kick off the morning games with a boat race and carnival-style competitions. Morning activities may be repeated as many times as you like while time permits. After lunch, we will all come together for group competitions. Contest scores will be weighted such that Boat Decorating accounts for 10%, Tent 20%, Costume 20%, and Fire Starting 10% of the overall score. All other activities will be equally weighted to make up the other 40% of the overall score. Morning Games Boat Racing : Viking clans will bring materials to decorate the canoes. Points will be awarded for decorative creativity and for the boat race. The boat will be manned by two oarsmen from each clan. Scoring for the race will be ranked by time. Catigory Point Description Max possible Design Race +20 points for decorating the canoe to look like a Viking longship. Top 10 best designs will receive additional points (+10 for 1st place to +1 for 10th place) Points will be awarded reverse rank by place. First place will receive points equal to the number of clans registered for camp. 30 Equal to number of clans Archery : Scoring for individuals is based on the BSA Archery Merit Badge Book using a five-color target face with 10-ring scoring: The number of arrows shot will be determined by the Range Master. Time permitting, Vikings may return to the range to improve their scores. A Viking s highest score will be used for his clan s total score. A clan s score is the sum of the 5 highest scores from the clan. Ax Throwing : Scoring for individuals will be similar to archery. The number of throws will be determined by the Range Master. Time permitting, Vikings may return to the range to improve their scores. A Viking s highest score will be used for his clan s total score. A clan s score is the sum of the 5 highest scores from the clan. Spear Throwing : The spears will be wooden broom handles. Similar to javelin throwing, this competition will be scored by distance thrown. Distance will be measured from the throw line to the spear s first point of impact with the ground. Points will be equal to the number of feet thrown rounded up to the next foot. Judge s measurement is final. Arguing will result in 0 points. Time permitting, Vikings may return to the range to improve their scores. A Viking s highest score will be used for his clan s total score. A clan s score is the sum of the 5 highest scores from the clan. 12

14 Rock Throwing : Similar to shot put, this competition will be scored by distance thrown. This is not a discus, so no spinning throws! Other than that, you don t have to adhere to any formal methods. Distance will be measured from the throw line to the rock s first point of impact with the ground. Points will be equal to the number of inches thrown. Judge s measurement is final. Arguing will result in 0 points. Time permitting, Vikings may return to the range to improve their scores. A Viking s highest score will be used for his clan s total score. A clan s score is the sum of the 5 highest scores from the clan. Caber Toss : A caber is a log tapered at one end. The thrower lifts the caber vertically with the tapered end cupped in his hands. The objective is to toss the caber so that it spins end-over-end 180 degrees, lands on the wide end, and falls with the tapered end in the 12-o'clock position. Scoring is based on the spin and landing. Distance thrown is not a factor in this game. Fire Starting : Like last year, the objective is to start fire. Different from last year, you won t set up a fire lay or burn through a string. Every Viking will bring enough material to make three Bird s Nests. Just make bird's nests and start them on fire using the three methods described on page 7. Make the fire drill of your choice (hand drill, bow drill, or pump drill) before the camporee. It s up to you if you want to make one fire drill for your clan or enough for every clan member. Clans can bring a fire-steel and magnifying glass, or you can use ones provided by the camp. Each Viking can earn points. Time permitting, Vikings may try multiple times to improve their scores. A Viking s highest score will be used for his clan s total score. A clan s score is the sum of the 5 highest scores from the clan. Fastest times from each clan will be ranked and points will be distributed in reverse rank order. Catigory Point Description Max possible Fire-Steel +5 for getting sparks to catch on char cloth, +10 for making fire 15 Fire Drill +5 for getting smoke, +10 for getting a coal, +10 for making fire 25 Burning Glass +5 for getting smoke, +10 for making fire 15 Time For each of the three methods, the clan s best times from start to ignition will be ranked. Points will be distributed in reverse rank order. Afternoon Games The Practical Knot Challenge : It s one thing to know the names of your knots, another thing to tie them, and yet another to know what knot to use in any given situation. Clans will be given a scenario. The clan will tie the appropriate knot and give it s name. Some situations could justify the use of more than one kind of knot or lashing. For example, joining two ropes can be done with 13

15 a square knot or a sheet bend. But this is a race, so if the two ropes are the same diameter, go with the square knot. Go with the sheet bend if the ropes are different diameters. First clan that correctly completes the knot or lashing will earn the point. Knots and lashings will be chosen from the BSA Handbook. (Splices and whippings are good to know, but won t be part of this contest.) Toga Hönk : Tug-of-War as we know it, but this game is played with a circular rope and multiple teams. Relay Race : This relay race will test your Vikinging skills. Skills are from any of the Scout through First Class Rank requirements. Points are earned by correctly completing each task. Treasure Hunt : Pull out your compass and know your paces. For this you ll want to review Second Class Requirement 3. We will complete First Class Requirement 4 (one mile orienteering course) on the hunt for the lost Viking Treasure. First Aid : Vikings were warriors, and with battle came injury. Understand the principle of triage. Review first aid skills from Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. Best of the Best Points will also be awarded for - Best sword (all wood) - Best shield (construction and design) - Best battle axe (all wood) - Best costume overall - Best Viking canvas tent & designs 14

16 Advancements Note to Viking Elders ( Scoutmasters ): Opportunities will be available for your Vikings to do rank requirements. Make copies of this and the next page for your Vikings to take to each activity. You and Camporee Judges can sign off requirements. Vikings will return this form to you at the end. Viking s Tribe (troop #) Viking s name Camping Tenderfoot 1a. Present yourself to your leader, prepared for an overnight camping trip. Show the personal and camping gear you will use. Show the right way to pack and carry it. 1b. Spend at least one night on a patrol or troop campout. Sleep in a tent you have helped pitch. 1c. Tell how you practiced the Outdoor Code on a campout or outing. 2nd Class 1a. Since joining Boy Scouts, participate in five separate troop/patrol activities, at least three of which must be held outdoors. Of the outdoor activities, at least two must include overnight camping. These activities do not include troop or patrol meetings. On campouts, spend the night in a tent that you pitch or other structure that you help erect, such as a lean-to, snow cave, or tepee.* 1b. Explain the principles of Leave No Trace and tell how you practiced them on a campout or outing. This outing must be different from the one used for Tenderfoot requirement 1c. 1st Class 1a. Since joining Boy Scouts, participate in 10 separate troop/patrol activities, at least six of which must be held outdoors. Of the outdoor activities, at least three must include overnight camping. These activities do not include troop or patrol meetings. On campouts, spend the night in a tent that you pitch or other structure that you help erect, such as a lean-to, snow cave, or tepee.* 1b. Explain each of the principles of Tread Lightly! and tell how you practiced them on a campout or outing. This outing must be different from the ones used for Tenderfoot requirement 1c and Second Class requirement 1b. 9c. On a Scouting or family outing, take note of the trash and garbage you produce. Before your next similar outing, decide how you can reduce, recycle, or repurpose what you take on that outing, and then put those plans into action. Compare your results. * Rank requirement revision effective August 1,

17 Viking s Tribe (troop #) Viking s name Cooking Tenderfoot 2a. On the campout, assist in preparing one of the meals. Tell why it is important for each patrol member to share in meal preparation and cleanup. 2b. While on a campout, demonstrate an appropriate method of safely cleaning items used to prepare, serve, and eat a meal. 2c. Explain the importance of eating together as a patrol. Fire Building Second Class 2a. Explain when it is appropriate to use a fire for cooking or other purposes and when it would not be appropriate to do so. 2b. Use the tools listed in Tenderfoot requirement 3d to prepare tinder, kindling, and fuel wood for a cooking fire. 2c. At an approved outdoor location and time, use the tinder, kindling, and fuel wood from Second Class requirement 2b to demonstrate how to build a fire. Unless prohibited by local fire restrictions, light the fire. After allowing the flames to burn safely for at least two minutes, safely extinguish the flames with minimal impact to the fire site. Knots Tenderfoot 3a. Demonstrate a practical use of the square knot. 3b. Demonstrate a practical use of two half-hitches. 3c. Demonstrate a practical use of the taut-line hitch. 2nd Class 2f. Demonstrate tying the sheet bend knot. Describe a situation in which you would use this knot. 2g. Demonstrate tying the bowline knot. Describe a situation in which you would use this knot. 1st Class 3b. Demonstrate tying the timber hitch and clove hitch. 3c. Demonstrate tying the square, shear, and diagonal lashings by joining two or more poles or staves together. Orienteering 1st Class 4a. Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least one mile and requires measuring the height and/or width of designated items (tree, tower, canyon, ditch, etc.). 16

18 Drug and Weapon Policy Drugs and Alcohol Illegal drugs and alcohol are not permitted at any time, and all tobacco use should be out of sight of scouts and others. All waste needs to be packed out. Standard rules from the Guide to Safe Scouting apply with respect to prescription medications. Knives, Weapons, and Firearms Scouts with Totin Chip cards may carry one pocket knife. We encourage you to come dressed in Viking attire. That said, weapons must be limited to costume accessories and be time period appropriate. If your sword, ax, or quiver of arrows have the appearance of being dangerous, staff will have to assume you are donating them to the district. Thank you for keeping scouting safe. With the exception of law enforcement officers, no one is permitted to carry firearms. 17
