2 Superhero Adventures!!! A spent cast of Superheroes will look to arriving Scouts and leaders for help adjusting back to normal lives as camp staff after defeating their latest, greatest nemesis. As night approaches, the "Camp staff" will begin the process of preparing their Scout side-kicks through entertaining as well as educational stories, skits and songs... all in an effort to prepare for the next threat that may challenge the Ware Superheroes. Our Superheroes and their newly recruited side-kick's adventures will continue the following days, as all Scouts and leaders help to create a new league of Superheroes, learning what it means to be a "True Hero"! With the skills and virtues learned through different Superhero training (Scout skill building activities), evil will be vanquished and Camp Ware will be saved! As immediate and tangible evidence of their training, Scouts will collect special gems (beads) from our Superheroes home planet during program sessions to mark their successful participation in the daily activities, efforts to help others succeed and group participation. They will be a given an energy band (string) to harvest their gems as a reminder of their achievements. Every Scout will leave Camp Ware feeling accomplished and recognized! Bring your superhero gear!

3 So what is summer resident camp really all about???? Shhhhhhh... Don t tell your Scout this but it is learning disguised as FUN!!! 4 What your Scout s day will be like... The camping day begins with a refreshing dip in the pool followed by breakfast in the dining hall. Then it's off to activities such as handicrafts, BB's, archery and nature with fellow Scouts and leaders. After lunch and a short siesta, it's back to the activity areas with the site guide leading the way. Optional staff directed pack activities such as fishing, cooking, nature hikes, more swimming or a service project rounds out the afternoon. Scouts will have worked up a big appetite so they might need a little encouragement to get into Class A uniforms for the formal retreat at the parade field right before dinner. A trip to the trading post before the exciting camp wide evening activity, then perhaps a campfire back at campsite before bed brings the day to a close. A cracker-barrel for leaders will provide an opportunity to meet with the staff to review that day and relax. 5-Day Webelos Advancement Camp: Your Scout may be attending our new Webelos Program this summer. This program is specifically built for Webelos to complete advancement requirements and understand what it will be like to be a Boy Scout. This program is one extra day prior to the combined Cub & Webelos Scout session. It will follow a similar structure to the daily Cub/Webelos session, but will focus on achieving Arrow of Light requirements. Webelos choosing not to attend the one extra day will still receive an excellent program focused on advancement but will likely not accomplish as much and will not experience some of the special activities planned as outlined below: (Extra) Benefits of the Webelos Program ~ Learn the what Boy Scouts will be like Earn tough pins and complete advancements towards his Arrow of Light Participate in a special campfire and dinner, planned just for the Webelos Visit the Boy Scout camp at Camp Horseshoe Go on an Outpost to a remote part of camp and sleep under the stars! Imagination is a wonderful thing. It is only limited by the surrounding encasing it. Camp Ware opens the door, themes create worlds, cub Scouts live the dreams!

5 Other great information... As tempting as it might be (considering how much you and your son will miss one another) please do not plan to a visit until the last day. The entire family is welcome and encouraged to join us the last day to see your son s accomplishments recognized as well as partake in our Famous Last Day Chicken Barbeque. As part of the BSA Child Abuse Prevention Program, all visitors must sign in at our headquarters building. If a Scout or adult is to leave camp for any reason, he must sign out at headquarters. If he is to leave camp with anyone who is not his parent/guardian, we must have a signed parent/guardian release form. Any individuals removing a Scout from camp must identify themselves with adequate identification prior to leaving camp. Part of the medical form requires that a physical is had and it is signed off by a physician. Please keep the original and provide camp a copy. If your son is attending with his den or pack, this form should be given to your camp coordinator in advance. If just you and your Scout are attending be sure to bring them with you to camp. 6 Check-in: Check-in for Webelos attending the 5-Day Webelos Advancement camp is between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. as well as between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. for Webelos and Cub Scouts arriving the next day for the four day program. Although we greatly appreciate your excitement and the temptation to come early, please do not arrive any earlier than the time listed above. This will allow Camp Ware staff proper time to prepare for your arrival. What to Expect: When arriving in camp, site guides will greet you and help move you into your home-a-way-from home for the next several days. A map of camp with the locations of all activities as well as the campsite you will be staying in will be provided. All members of the pack will be staying in the same tent site. Cub Scouts arriving day two will join the Webelos already in camp. Only if requested will your youngest Cub Scouts (Wolves & Bears) stay in Macaleer Lodge. What better way to help develop unity within the pack. Specific program areas will continue to exist for Cub Scouts and Webelos Scouts. Depending on the size of your pack, you will share a campsite with one or more other packs in order to accommodate everyone in camp. Parent & Scouts attending independently will join their fellow Scouters, staying in a tent site. Swim Check: EVERYONE MUST BRING A MEDICAL FORM! The Ins & Outs of Camp... The very first thing every camper will do after settling in is a swim test to determine their skill level in the pool. So pack your bathing suit on top! Aquatics facilities are for the use of registered campers only. Every camper will be issued a buddy tag at the health lodge upon arriving at camp unless such activity is restricted by doctor s orders. Each camper is required to take a swimming test upon arrival to determine their swimming ability and classification. Any camper may request to be classified as a non-swimmer without having to take a swim test. All adults and Scouts are required to use the buddy system. Remember going away to camp as a kid or on a field trip, maybe even vacation and how cool it was to buy a souvenir? Our camp maintains a well-stocked trading post. Items such as candy, soft drinks, personal items, souvenirs as well as program items such as crafts are available. Additionally, the trading post stocks items like compasses, Scout knives, t-shirts, belts, buckles, patches. Don t forget money for the trading post!

7 Letters and packages can be sent to the address listed below; include the scout s name, pack number and Camp Ware. Remember to mail it enough days in advance so that it arrives while the Scout is still in camp. Packages will not be returned if they arrive late. may also be sent to a camper. A link can be found on the home page of our website Each campsite has a mailbox in the headquarters building that should be checked daily. Our camp has one public phone line and one business line. Because of the size of the camp and the varied schedule of each Scout, there is no practical way to put an incoming call on hold. If urgency demands, we will attempt to locate Scouts quickly; otherwise, a message will be delivered to the appropriate unit leader. Check-out and Pick-up: If as a parent attending with just your Scout (rather than with the pack or den) please note than an opportunity will exist to check-out on the last day with our business manager. At that time you will verify finances and pick up your chicken dinner tickets. Scouts & leaders will utilize free time throughout the day to pack gear and clean campsite in preparation for late day final inspection by the Camp Commissioner or their designee. Parents and visitors should plan to arrive between 12 and 12:15 p.m. Final day retreat in which Scouts receive their awards begins at 1:20 p.m. World Famous Last Day Grilled Chicken Barbeque begins between 12:30 and 12:45 p.m. World Famous Last Day Grilled Chicken Barbeque well in the Camp Ware World at least! All Scouts, parents, siblings & guests are cordially invited to join us the last day of the week for our World Famous Grilled Chicken Barbeque. For those of you have joined us in the past you ll be excited about a new spin... the songs will still be there but the meal will be an outdoor grilled chicken barbeque party! Let your pack know if you re coming to the chicken barbeque! Ticket prices: Adults: $8 Youth 5-12: $6 Under 5: free Tickets need to bought upon arrival so we can Be Prepared. As sad as it is for us to see you all go, camp must come to an end... All campers must exit camp no later than 2 p.m. on the last day.

Sturdy pants (jeans) T-shirts Raincoat or poncho (yes ~ it can rain at camp) Sneakers (bring a back-up pair!) Socks (bring extra!) Hiking boots Sleeping bag with pillow or sheets (Tents provided have a cot with mattress.) Toilet Articles Toothbrush/toothpaste Washcloth Soap Deodorant Recommended Items Flashlight with fresh batteries Pocket knife (no sheath knives) *Webelos only* Spending money (Trading post will be open!) Fishing gear (including Pa license) Sunglasses Compass Camera and film Water bottle Folding Chair Alarm clock (just in case) Sunscreen Bug spray Comb and/or brush Towel (bring an extra of this too!) Health Forms As an event lasting is more than 72 hours, sections A, B and C of the BSA Annual Health & Medical Record are required. A physical is needed to attend this encampment. What NOT to Bring to Camp: Hunting and sheath knives, fireworks and firecrackers, bicycles, alcoholic beverages, firearms and ammunition, radios, video games, as well as all other electronic equipment (please limit cell phone use to emergencies), pets, pocket knives. 9 Some really important stuff... We recognize that sending your Scout off to an overnight Cub Scout summer camp (with or without you) is a decision that probably took a good bit of thought and contemplating. Just as it is more than likely an experience that will cause your son a few butterflies, you may be inclined to have a few fluttering around in your stomach too! Our goal in providing the following information is to help settle some of those butterflies! We talk a lot about having FUN at camp, but in reality the health and safety of your Scout (as well as leaders) is our number one priority! All program area directors are 21 years of age or older and participate in specialized training at camp school, becoming BSA National Camp School certified A licensed/certified health officer is at camp 24 hours a day/7 days a week Lifeguards are BSA certified; standards of which exceed the American Red Cross The number of CPR/AED trained staff members exceeds the required standard More than 50% of camp staff are over the age of 18; exceeding the standard All staff members receive 18+ hours of training which includes heath and safety Chester County Council, Camp John H. Ware, III is registered and approved by the state of Pennsylvania Our camp is inspected by the health department National Camp School inspected, certified and accredited to meet specified, strategic standards Our camp is considered a Safe Zone following specific security policies and procedures; overseen by a safety committee We require that all visitors must sign-in and out of camp Measures are in place to distinguish between staff members, campers (youth & adult) and visitors BSA standard of two-deep adult leadership, with at least one adult leader being registered with the Boy Scouts of America is strictly upheld All BSA registered leaders have completed Youth Protection Training Food allergies and special dietary needs will be accommodated (simply communicate this to your unit leader or contact the camp director one week prior to attending) All campers complete a swim test to determine their skill level prior to any activity in the pool - a camper can opt out of the swim test understanding they are then limited only to the shallow end of the pool Nationally Accredited

10 The Cub Scout Motto Do Your Best. Doing his best is one of the most important things for the Cub Scout to learn. Boys often become so interested in winning that they fail to see the importance of doing the best they can at everything. One boy's best might be quite different from another boy's best. Cub Scouting teaches boys that no one can find fault with them if they always do their best. MISSION STATEMENT OF THE HORSESHOE SCOUT RESERVATION Provide and maintain quality outdoor program facilities which will foster the development of advanced summer and year round scouting programs for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts in the Chester County Council, BSA. It is the mission of the entire Camp Ware staff to support and foster the Cub Scout Motto.
