4 Lake Mead The beautiful landscape of Lake Mead and the surrounding area in Nevada is a much different picture today than many centuries ago. For thousands of years, the land known as Lake Mead and Hoover Dam were occupied by natives of the Hopi, Mojave, Havasupai and other tribes. These people lived along or near the Colorado River because it made it possible to live in this desert region. The Colorado River is a very important river whose headwaters are located in the Rocky Mountains. It flows through seven (7) states and provides the resources for the plants and wildlife to survive in the areas adjacent to the large natural waterway. This arduous river has provided the environment for many cultures to hunt wildlife for food, utilize the plant life there, practice farming, and take advantage of the water source for many uses. Spanish explorers were recorded in this area as early as the 1500s as they were looking for silver, gold, and other wealth in the North American region. It was during this time, that the Spanish conqueror, Coronado, was the first non-native person to see the Grand Canyon. Later, Spanish priests came to the area and explored the Colorado River basin for routes of travel for their missions. Sometime in the 1800s, European and American explorers came to the area as fur traders and gold seekers. River explorers and mappers also made their way to this area as the country expanded westward. Several decades later, Hoover Dam was built over the period of 1931 to The purpose of building Hoover Dam was to control the raging Colorado River and provide a consistent means of irrigation to the surrounding states. The Hoover Dam reached 726 high and when completed, it was not only the world s largest concrete structure, but also the world s largest hydroelectric power station. During the five-year construction of this historical monument, more than 21,000 workers contributed to the project. The Hoover Dam was built with enough concrete to form a two-lane highway that would stretch from New York to San Francisco. That s about 4,000 miles! The water pooled in Lake Mead by Hoover Dam is capable of irrigating two million acres while big turbines in the power station can produce electricity to more than one million homes! Lake Mead and Hoover Dam are definitely places to see when traveling through this area in Nevada.
