2 Welcome to SPR Summer Camp 2017! This booklet contains great information about our upcoming summer camps, including camp and trip plans, info on how to register, and information about our Theater and Performing Arts Academies, great local sports programs and camp opportunities through Thornton Academy, and new this year a program for families to help children in need in our community be able to attend camp! Our K-8 camps will run this summer from June 26th-August 25th! Additional coverage after camp may be available as needed once the school calendar is finalized, so stay tuned. We are looking forward to our most funnerest summer ever! Morning Chill: Before Care Program for K-8 Camps Who: Anyone registered for Camps Kinder-8th grade Where: Saco Community Center Time: 6:30 AM 8:30 AM Fee: $7.00/day Residents $8.00/day Non-residents When: June 26th August 25th, 2017 Breakfast is included Join us for a summer of structured fun and play for our youngest age group! This introduction to Summer Camp offers a great opportunity for your child to socialize, play games, participate in Arts & Crafts along with some basic movement and stretching set to music. With fewer campers and lower staff to child ratios we will be able to offer this age group one of the best first summer camp experiences in the area. Each day will be a combination of Indoor and Outdoor Activities. Each week will feature a special theme at Camp! We will use multiple rooms, our gym and our outdoor play structure! Morning Chill & Sandbox Summer 2017 Page 2 This is a separate program to help those that have to be to work earlier than our traditional 7:30 AM drop off or, if you have multiple children at different camps, you can drop them all off at one location! Children will enjoy a GREAT start to the day. They will have the use of Room 114 at the Community Center for breakfast and morning activities as well as access to the gym to get them moving before heading off to camp. Please enter the program from the Bradley Street Front Entrance. You must accompany your child into the program to check in with the staff. Breakfast is available in Morning Chill through the School Department s Summer Breakfast and Lunch program. Sandbox Tots Summer Day Camp June 26th August 10th, 2017 Ages: 3 5 as of July 1st and MUST be potty trained Where: Saco Community Center and Play Structure Time: 9:00 AM Noon Monday Thursday Fee Options Residents: $15.00/day Non-Residents: $16.00/day Only days paid for in advance will guarantee a spot Daily Limit of 25 campers

3 Kinder Discovery Summer Day Camp June 26th-August 25th, 2017 Ages: Entering Kindergarten Fall 2017 Where: Saco Community Center & Playground Time: 7:30 AM 6:00 PM Monday Friday Fee: see page 8 on fees We are so excited to continue the success of our Kinder Discovery Summer Day Camp for children entering school for the first time in the fall! Our goal for this camp is to assist children in their transition to school by introducing them to group concepts in a smaller environment and a structured set of daily activities. Kinder Discovery Camp participants will experience activities that prepare them for school such as taking their first bus ride and visiting both Fairfield and Young schools in Saco to tour the schools and spend some quality time at the playground. Other opportunities include touring the local Fire Station and having a visit from the Canine Unit of the Police Department. Campers will participate in on-camp events and age-level appropriate field trips throughout the summer as well. Highlighted activities and trips for Kinder Discovery Camp include: The Portland Children's Museum! Funtown! Aquaboggan! Camp stage shows featuring Sparks Ark and Little Red Wagon theater group Our popular camp events: SPR Penny Carnival, PeppFest, G-Force Laser Tag, and NEW this year Water Wars! NEW! Theater Academy Friday shows throughout the summer Please note: there is a maximum of 50 spots DAILY available for this camp. There is a maximum of 50 total spots available for each day between those that registered for the Full Summer Open and those that are registering using the Daily Option. We will be allowing more than 50 total memberships to our Kinder Discovery camp. Daily spots will be sold on a first come-first serve basis to the first 50 members registering per day. We encourage parents to register your children early to guarantee a spot and also for staffing & trip planning purposes. Without your help in registering early and because space is limited on buses, last minute registrations cannot always be accommodated or may require an additional fee depending on the day; most of our field trips require advanced reservations and ticket entry. Advanced registration is highly recommended. See our pricing breakdown for cost-saving options for those that register early during the spring through June 1st. Same-day payments for daily registrations may not be allowed. Sunscreen will be supplied for our Camps for grades k-6! *Sunscreen will include name brand options. 4 Pepperell Explorers Summer Day Camp June 26th26th-August 25th, 2017 Pepperell Explorers Summer Day Camp provides age appropriate trips and just the right level of activities for grades 1 & 2! Trips planned for this camp include but are not limited to: Children's Museum and Maine Wildlife Park, Strawberry and blueberry picking, and camp stage shows with music and puppets; Bowling, Jokers, Sea Dogs, Funtown and Aquaboggan; Our popular camp events including the SPR Penny Carnival, PeppFest, Studios2Go and G-Force Laser Tag, and NEW this year Nerf Wars and Water Wars! Beach blasts, more fresh water and pool facilities, and our popular campground trips to Wagon Wheel and Acres of Wildlife; NEW! Theater Academy Friday shows throughout the summer; On-camp learning: Over the years we have offered Science Club, Reading Club, Improv, Chorus, Soccer, Basketball, play structure, Walking Club, Healthy Snacks, and of course Academic Academy when we teach French, Spanish, History, Math and Sign Language. This camp will operate as a separate program from our Summer Adventure camp also at SMS. Some of the activities already planned include but are not limited to: Boston Trip to the Museum of Science; Amtrak Downeaster train ride to the University of New Hampshire Dairy Bar and other facilities; Maine Wildlife Park, Casco Bay Cruise, and Seadogs Game; Camp Events including Studios2Go, NEW this year Nerf Wars and Water Wars, G-Force Laser Tag, and stage shows with music and puppets, SPR Penny Carnival; bowling, Happy Wheels, Funtown, and Aquaboggan; local fishing, beach blasts, more fresh water/pool facilities, & our popular campground trips to Wagon Wheel and Acres of Wildlife; Strawberry and blueberry picking, and trip to Fort Williams; NEW! 7 Teen Epic Camp: June 26th June 26th-August 25th, 2017 Ages: Entering 7th, 8th & 9th Grade Fall 2017 Where: Saco Community Center Our Teen Epic Camp format is unlike any of our other camp programs, giving parents of older campers more options and flexibility in selecting which days and trips your child would like to attend. Check Out Our Teen Epic Day Camp Program Details! Format: The weekly schedule will be divided into regular camp days and field trip days. Parents can pick and choose which days to register their children for based on activities planned. Regular on-camp days: Schedule: On-Camp days are on Mondays at the Saco Community Center and will include a lunchtime lecture series featuring guest speakers. Hours: 7:30 am-6:00 pm. Cost: On-camp day pricing is $25.00 per day for Mondays only. Activities: Campers will participate in camp activities, specialty clubs, bike trips, volunteering, small local off-site trips, and more! Field Trip Days: Schedule: Field trips occur Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday each week. Hours and Cost: varies by trip. Universal Childcare Membership: $20.00/residents; $25.00/nonresidents. Membership fees are non-refundable. Membership includes access to SPR Kids Kare and School s Out programs. Trips: we will provide a full calendar of our amazing field trips along with online registration in the spring. Trip highlights include: Exploring the state of Maine featuring a tour throughout the summer of regional state parks. Teen Epic campers will participate in the state s Passport Program with weekly trips to mountains, beaches, islands, forts and more! Highlighted field trips also include: Whale Watching, River Tubing, Trip to the Boston Aquarium, Canobie Lake Park, Urban Air, Portland Science Center, and Ropes Course and Zipline adventures at Attitash Mountain! Registration Info and Process for Teen Epic Day Camp Teen Epic s registration process is different than our other camps as fees are trip-dependent. Step ONE: Enrollment in the Teen Epic Camp program Please provide all required forms (see page 8) to the Saco Community Center office. A non-refundable Universal Childcare Membership fee of $20.00/residents or $25.00/ non-residents is due to enroll. Please note: this membership fee is not applied to trips. Membership includes access to SPR Kids Kare and School s Out programs. Step TWO: Making weekly payments during the summer. During the summer, weekly payments will be due the Thursday prior to the week needed, unless otherwise specified, to allow for trip reservations. Some deadlines may be earlier. Last minute trip registrations may not always be able to be accommodated or may require an additional fee as most of our field trips require advanced reservations and ticket entry. There is a maximum of 50 spots available for each trip. We will be allowing more than 50 total memberships to our Teen Epic camp. Trip spots will be sold on a first come-first serve basis to the first 50 members registering per trip. Advanced trip registration is highly recommended as some trips sell out well before the weekly deadlines. Same-day trip registrations may not be allowed. Page 7 Teen Epic Camp Summer 2017

8 SPR Summer Camp Registration Instructions Registration opens Monday, March 13th for everyone and is open through June 16th or until space allows. If there are still spots open, registration will reopen on Tuesday June 27, In order to register you must follow the guidelines below. Anyone with an outstanding household balance will not be allowed to register until the balance is paid. Step ONE: At Home (If you have not already) Create an account at Download and complete a Participant Contact Form on your computer (must be typed handwritten forms will not be accepted). Step TWO: At the Saco Community Center Option 1 IN PERSON: Bring in completed form(s), membership fee, and first payment to the office. OR Option 2 You may your completed contact form to parksandrec@sacomaine.org. The office will print your registration form for you. Please note your registration will not be completed until you come to the office to complete payment and receive your camper t-shirts and handbook. Following receipt of all forms, membership fee, & first payment, your child will be registered for camp. After registration, online payments will then be available to pay for your summer camp needs. parksandrec@sacomaine.org Summer Camp K-6th Payment Options: Step 1: Universal Childcare Membership Fee: A non-refundable membership fee of $20.00/ residents or $25.00/non-residents is due to enroll. Membership fees are not applied to program costs. NEW this year, memberships include access to SPR Kids Kare and School s Out programs. This year s K-6 camp pricing is variable based on when you register. Earlier registration rates are discounted. See below for details. EARLY Pricing Options Rates available through June 1st, 2017: Full Summer: Resident Fee: $975.00; Non-Resident Fee: $ Full Summer Initial Payment $150.00/res or $175.00/non-res due at registration towards balance. Payments can be made online towards the total due after registering with the office and can be made in whichever increments work for you. The final balance is due before June 1st. If the deadline is not met, you will have to move to paying the June 2nd Daily Rate, and will lose the full summer reduced rate. Daily: Resident Fee: $30.00/day; Non-Resident Fee: $35.00/day Early to receive the discounted daily rate, all single days needed during the summer must be registered and paid for by June 1st. Adding additional dates after June 1st will be at the increased daily rate (see below). 9 SPR Camp Field Trip tees 2017 Camp Registration Upgrade: campers receive two cotton tees as part of their summer camp registration. NEW! Parents may opt to upgrade one or both of these tees to a Dri-Fit Tee! Dri-Fit upgrade is $5.00 per shirt. Must purchase in person for upgrade. Limit of two per child during registration period; additional dri-fit tees will be available for sale during summer camp. Cotton Trip Tees: 2 included with registration. Additional tees available for separate purchase for $ Dri-Fit Trip Tees: Lightweight, highly breathable, and moisture-wicking! These dri-fit tees are perfect for campers to wear on water activity trips and hot summer days! May upgrade registrations tees or purchase separately for $ Fee Waiver Application Process For Kinder Discovery, Pepperell Explorers, Great Escape, and Summer Adventure Camps* Fee Waiver Applications are available to download at or pick up at the Community Center. All applications may be submitted by Saco residents starting March 13th, All information must be complete and all required forms attached; please bring copies of required receipts/bills/taxes, etc. Fee Waivers are awarded on a first come, first serve basis and based on financial need - do not wait as funds are limited and go quickly. Fee waiver applications will be accepted until funds are expended. After you receive waiver approval in the mail you can begin the registration process. The registration process must be started within 7 days of receipt of your fee waiver letter or you risk losing the award. Please refer to the Fee Waiver application packet for complete waiver information. If you were granted a fee waiver for Summer 2016 and/or School s Out and either did not use it or did not meet the agreed minimum use, you are not eligible to apply for the following year s fee waiver program unless otherwise approved by the SPR Director. *Please note: the Teen Epic camp is not eligible for fee waivers as this is a contracted program. Summer Camp participants have access to our new extended care program Kids Kare for additional care options on evenings and weekends! FMI: please visit our Kids Kare activity page online at Refund/credit policy General overview For Kinder Discovery, Pepperell Explorers, Great Escape, and Summer Adventure Camps* Different deadlines and refund/credit options apply depending on the registration option you chose: Full Summer Camp Registration - Refund requests must be made 3 business days prior to the start of camp to be eligible for a full refund, less any required deposits. Refund requests made less than 3 business days prior to the start through the end of week 4 of summer camp will be eligible for a 50% refund. No refunds or credits will be given for requests starting in week 5. Full Summer Campers will not be issued credits for any days not attended. Daily Summer Camp Registration Refunds will be issued as credits to your sacorec.com account. Changes in daily needs (either cancellations or moving dates) must be done by 1 business days prior to the date(s) registered for. If we receive notification less than 1 business day, we will issue a credit of 50% of the paid daily registration fee. Please note for all summer camp refunds: membership fees are non-refundable. *Please note: the Teen Epic camp does not follow this refund/credit policy as this is a contracted program. Saco Parks and Recreation is now offering a way for families to help one another in our community. This year, you may help a child in need attend SPR summer camp through our summer scholarship program. All contributions will be used to register a child and cover the cost of their activities and supplies. This is a great way to help your neighbor and a reminder to us all that it takes a village! Funding options are available online at with our summer camp payments activity info. Please call us at with any questions. THEATER and Performing art ACADEMies This year s Theater and Performing Arts Academies will be offered in a new format with one registration option to cover the full day. This will provide a convenient experience to all our families! All Day Program: Hours are 7:30am-6:00pm, providing the same full day coverage as our standard camps. Many people cannot send their children to a sports camp or arts based camp because of the hours of the camp. This option will allow those families to participate as it includes the before and after care to the Academy on-site and built right into the registration. 11 Local Affiliate sports groups & Camps Here s an overview of local youth sports affiliate programs and summer camps available through TA and SPR! Local affiliate youth sports programs The following youth sports groups offer programs throughout the year. They are not run through the Saco Parks and Recreation Department but we often work in conjunction with the groups to provide facilities for meetings, practices, and games. Please note their web info below and contact the groups for additional information on their programs and registration. Youth sports camps for basketball, soccer, football, field hockey and other sports are traditionally offered at Thornton Academy in the summer. TA Hoops Camp: Monday-Friday June 26-June 30, 2017 (tentative dates) TA Field Hockey Camp Info: Monday-Thursday July 10-13, 2017 from 9:00amnoon. For children entering grades 3-9. Look for more info at: St. Peter s Grand Slam tennis Camp The summer s tennis academy offered through the St. Peter's Grand Slam Tennis Program is a fun, yet challenging and instructional camp for boys and girls ages 7-11 at all skill levels. This academy is taught by certified teaching pros & college tennis players. Champions on the court = Champions in Life! Tennis for those who want to learn the right way, without any short cuts. 12 Beach Coverage and Water safety One of the questions we are asked most frequently is how do we handle staff coverage to ensure the safety of campers when a trip involves water and swimming. This is one of our top priorities in trip planning and staff training, and something we take very seriously given the widely varying swimming abilities of our campers. Here is an example of how we cover our beach trips. We had an alumni summer camp director who has a drone take photos of one of our camp groups at the beach in This staff member knows from experience how proud we are of our beach coverage and we are so thankful he was able to help us capture it! You can see in the photo that most of our staff take a position around the group with staff in the water creating a line that cannot be crossed. When the tide is out additional lines created across the group at multiple water levels give staff a great look at what is happening at the beach. If a staff member is not posted in the perimeter they are either playing with the campers in the middle of the grid area or taking groups on walks or to the bathroom. Parent Feedback These (photos) are amazing! Thank you to everyone involved in this program for keeping our kids safe and happy all summer! Awesome job on keeping our children safe!!! Love love love how the counselors setup at the beach for safe swimming!!! Classy! My child loved the Kinder Camp program this summer. The variety of field trips and on site programs/themes kept her looking forward to camp each day. As a parent, I felt the staff was super attentive and I was comfortable with procedures and policies that are in place for off site field trips. This was my children's first Summer with SPR and what an amazing Summer it was! They both enjoyed the variety and frequent field trips as well as a very professional and fun counselor/cit group! As a parent the check in/out process was organized and consistent making both transitions very quick and the program was very affordable! Most importantly both children made friends, learned new songs and games and had fun being kids all summer!
