Your Personal Invite to Attend Magness Adventure Camp! Hello fellow Scouts and family! I am absolutely stoked to see you at camp this summer! Myself and the Magness Adventure Camp Leadership team have worked diligently to ensure that you have an absolutely amazing stay during your time at Magness! You will participate in thrilling activities, an adventurous quest to save our camp from destruction, and learn and grow as a Cub Scout! Truly, young hero, you shall have the time of your life! Please with any questions! Yours, Mike Swanson Program Director Magness Adventure Camp Mike.Swanson@scouting.org

Welcome to Magness Adventure Camp Superhero Revolution 2018! Tis the day, campers from the outer world!! My name is Mike, otherwise known as the one and only, Mastertrainer! Upon arrival at Magness Adventure Camp, you will embark on a quest to discover your true Superpowers and save our camp from destruction! You have been selected to train at our Superhero training facility because, as Mastertrainer of every past, present, and future superhero, I have sensed that you have greatness within you and will become a valiant hero! You will train with some of our best Superheroes: Freight Train, The Musician, and Geodude! They will help you unravel your abilities so that you, young Superhero, can save the world! The Master of the Black Slime has infiltrated our camp, using his Slime to prevent our superheroes from using their powers and even turning some of our best heroes into supervillains! It is up to you, as Superheroes and our saviors, to prevent Magness from the rampant villain. Your quest will help you learn a large variety of skills during your stay that you can retain over your lifetime. Throughout the course of your stay, you will complete activities in Shooting Sports, Aquatics, Wilderness Survival, and many more rank required adventures on your path through Cub Scouts. Many of these skills will aid to the construction of a strong moral character, in route to the aims and goals that Scouting supports. Remember, you must save our camp from destruction! The burden rests on you, young hero, to save our camp from the evil wrath of the Master of the Black Slime! Best to wear your SUPERHERO SUIT, because your destiny can only wait without it! (Seriously, bring your superhero suit. Parents too!!) Sincerely, Mastertrainer

Brand New Program!!! 2018 has an amazing new opportunity in store for Webelos attending Magness Adventure Camp! This year, Webelos will participate in a brand-new program, entirely separate from the rest of camp! Not only will they spend time separate from other ranks during the day, but Webelos will be offered unique opportunities and participate in events the Boy Scouts of America only permits Webelos to do! Such opportunities will include rappelling, air rifle, a surprise set of separate evening activities only offered to Webelos, and weather permitting night sleeping under the stars!

Evening Activities Offered to All Scouts! Capture the Flag Whittling Chip Boating Swimming Shooting Sports Fire Tower Fishing Volleyball Gaga Scout-led Campfire! And much more! Webelos Overnight Event! Webelos are encouraged to participate in an overnight event during the 2 nd Night of the Session atop our First Mesa, one of the most serene and beautiful areas at Magness Adventure Camp. Webelos will participate in a surprise set of awesome activities separate from the rest of camp. However, if you wish to participate in this event, you must also bring a personal tent and a tarp, while prepared to take down and set up that tent, as well as all gear you bring to the event, including sleeping gear, backpacks, clothes, etc., so try to limit what you bring! We will have a truck to haul all gear placed on the stage of your Shelter immediately after breakfast in the morning on that 2 nd day (limited to tents, tarps, pillows, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads). We recommend that you label all of your gear to avoid confusion in transition of the gear haul. Be prepared for rain, hence the necessity for tarps! We highly encourage all Webelos to participate, although we do recognize that take down and set up can be a bit of a hassle. Therefore, this event is OPTIONAL and Webelos will not miss out on activities if they elect not to stay atop the First Mesa. Webelos Scouts may still participate in activities offered on the First Mesa if they choose to stay at the Shelters, but also have the option to participate in all other activities offered to the younger scouts. Again, though, we encourage all Webelos to participate in the event, as it will be a unique experience at camp and unlike any summer before. ***Per discrepancy, all program activities are subject to change.

MISSION STATEMENTS These statements are the core of Scouting, and staff members often remind Cub Scouts of them to help guide their actions. We believe all campers and staff at Magness should strive to live by these values. Boy Scouts of America Mission Statement The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch Mission Statement The mission of the Denver Area Council summer camping program is to provide each Scout with a memorable and challenging outdoor experience. Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch enriches the fundamentals of Scouting through unique opportunities for leadership and educational growth. Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch, and the Denver Area Council, BSA, is an equal opportunity facility that does not discriminate on the basis of sex, color, race, creed or religion. Cub Scouting Purposes The Cub Scouting program has 10 purposes related to the overall mission of the Boy Scouts of America to build character, learn citizenship, and develop personal fitness: 1. Character Development 2. Spiritual Growth 3. Good Citizenship 4. Sportsmanship & Fitness 5. Family Understanding 6. Respectful Relationships 7. Personal Achievement 8. Friendly Service 9. Fun and Adventure 10. Preparation for Boy Scouts Scout Law A Scout is: Trustworthy Loyal Helpful Friendly Courteous Kind Obedient Cheerful Thrifty Brave Clean Reverent Remember the Cub Scout Motto: Do your best! Scout Oath On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

WELCOME TO PEACEFUL VALLEY SCOUT RANCH! Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch is located in central Colorado, 65 miles southeast of Denver, a few miles south of the town of Elbert. The Ranch consists of 3,316 acres of mountain park terrain, 7,000 feet in elevation, along the Palmer Divide in the Black Forest. Peaceful Valley also functions as a working ranch throughout the year, with over 1,000 acres devoted to farming and grazing. There are three different Scout camps located on Peaceful Valley. A more detailed history of Peaceful Valley, and a description of all three camps, can be found in the general Peaceful Valley Guide for Leaders and Campers, which can be found at the Denver Area Council s website under the camping tab. Magness Adventure Camp Facilities Magness has three separate shelters, Lizard Head, Lost Creek, and Eagle s Nest. Each shelter is wheel-chair accessible and offers running water, flush toilets and hot showers, as well as a large, centrally located dining area, where meals prepared in the Coors Commissary will be served. There are 60 tents on permanent cement platforms surrounding each shelter and each tent has two cots with foam pads. An additional pad can be supplied for a third person or child under 5, if requested. Campers may also pitch their own tents around the shelters, though space can be limited. The Main Office and a well-stocked Medical Lodge are at the Headquarters building, directly next to our local Trading Post where many exciting toys, tools, costumes, and clothing items - as well as cold drinks, candy and ice cream - can be purchased. At the center of the Magness Shelters is Lake Kiewit, where camp participants can use canoes, paddleboats and rowboats, as well as swim, fish, and observe many wild animals. On the northern side of Magness are BB Gun Ranges, a Tomahawk Range, an Archery Range, and a Slingshot Range for guests to test their marksmanship! On the way to the ranges is the famous Magness Watch Tower, which is a fond memory for the thousands of Cub Scouts who have climbed it. All of these facilities are bordered on the North Eastern side by the First and Second Mesa, where all guests will can spend their time simply observing nature. Magness Program Cub Scouts and their families can expect a theme and activity-filled four days. After check-in and move-in, your first day kicks off with a camp-wide flag ceremony, ice cream social, and the opening campfire! Days 2 and 3 are spent with the Cub Scouts in Dens which are organized by rank, and provided a schedule of exciting activities all across the camp. And this year, there will be stationing of Magness staff at individual locations, who have been specifically trained to teach the Scouts using specialized knowledge and extended class time. Each Den will go through rank specific activities, ensuring all campers will be suitably challenged and engaged throughout their

time at Magness. In the middle of Day 3 there will also be a camp-wide festival around the lake where the Cubbies will test their recently learned skills on a dozen different games and challenges, all to be capped off with the grand finale of a closing show. Further details of the rotations, color groups, and exact times will be found in a parents guide handed out at check-in. Please note: all Scouts must be accompanied by an adult. CHECKING IN AT MAGNESS ADVENTURE CAMP! Check-In will take place from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. It will be helpful to you and us if the entire pack checks in together. Please do not arrive before 1:30 P.M., as check in will not begin until 1:30 and you will not be able to drive beyond the bathrooms at Headquarters. If you are delayed or must arrive after 5:00 P.M., you will need to complete checkin at the Main Office. When you arrive at Magness, you will be checked in by the staff in the parking lot near Headquarters and directed to your assigned shelter. Be Prepared by knowing your pack number! Please have your Medical Forms and Registration/Payment information available! FYI: At the peak of Check-In, there may be a minute wait, though we work hard to reduce this. While at check-in you will receive a Shelter Assignment, Participant Packet and other pertinent information including a schedule and list of activities. We will also collect your medical forms and verify that there isn t a balance due on your account. Remember, every individual staying overnight is required to turn in a medical form. If you didn t bring a completed medical form, you will have to complete one before heading to your shelter or beginning activities. Any balances due must be paid at check-in. Please verify any special dietary or other needs when you check-in! Medications: Any person under 18 without a parent or legal guardian at camp must turn in medications (both prescriptions and over-the-counter medications) to the Medic with their medical form. The Medic will fill out a Medication Administration form for the participant and administer the Medication from the Medical Lodge based on the medication schedule indicated.

Shelter Directors: Each shelter has a permanent Shelter Director. They will be able to answer any questions you may have, and assist you with anything you need to make your stay at Magness Adventure Camp a fantastic one. During your stay, your Shelter Director will pass along information, dictate the policies of camp, and assist in assigning your Scouts to a World Explorer Den. Parking and Vehicles: At your shelter, you will be directed into a parking space and receive further information from the Staff and your Shelter Director. While at Magness, your vehicle must remain parked unless you are leaving camp. It is expected that all transportation around camp be done on foot. If you need assisted transportation around camp, please let your Shelter Director know, and they will communicate with the Program Director. CHECKING OUT At the end of your stay at Magness Adventure Camp, please be sure to check out at the Main Office in the Magness Headquarters Building. Upon Checking Out you will receive: A Camp Evaluation Survey 1. Please complete this survey and let us know how we did and what you liked most/least The Magness Superhero patch Any medications you checked in with the Magness Medic Checkout is also the perfect time to check the Lost-And-Found for any items you may have misplaced while at Magness. If a valuable item such as a watch or wallet is discovered missing after you get home, call the Magness Adventure Camp Headquarters at to see if it has been turned in. All unclaimed items are donated to charity after September 1. Please note: Colorado State Law requires that, as a child care facility, we will keep a copy of your medical form for several years. The forms are kept in a secure manner and eventually shredded, but you will not be able to have your medical form returned to you. LASTLY, REMEMBER CAMPERS: BRING YOUR SUPERHERO SUITS!!!

ADDITIONAL FEES Damaged Equipment Fees All camp participants are responsible for taking care of the camp equipment that has been assigned for their use. In the case of damage to this equipment, the participants are responsible for paying for repairs or replacement. You and your Shelter Director will jointly inspect all tents and equipment when you arrive and will then check the equipment when you leave. Fees will be charged for damage on the basis of repair costs or replacement costs estimated by the Camp Director.
