2 Camp Shenandoah Leaders Guide CHAPTER 1: PROGRAM AREAS AND MERIT BADGE INFORMATION Our program is designed with the Scouting Progression in mind. This chapter will serve as a brief introduction to the program areas and classes we offer. (Our class offering may change depending on staff expertise) Our comprehensive online unit registration process offers detailed information, printable rosters, individual daily schedules, and information about prerequisites for each of the classes we offer. To start the online registration process, submit your Hold-A-Site deposit and reservation application. After we receive your Hold- A-Site Form and $100 deposit, we will create a unit account for you. Forms that you will need to complete will posted on our website: as well as in a Forms Guide. Many forms can be printed from the online registration system. ONLINE MERIT BADGE CLASS REGISTRATION After your unit submits a Hold-a-Site form and the $100 deposit, we create a preliminary unit account into the Tentaroo online registration system. Preliminary account permissions allow unit leaders to view unit balances as well as beginning to add youth information for those youth that will be attending camp. Units will only be able to fully register individual Scouts for merit badge classes online with our registration system beginning March 1 after Camper and Leader fees are paid in full. Early bird registration fees apply to those fees paid in full no later than May 1. Credit card payments can be made online using the secure payment method, or via check, cash or credit card payments by phone to SJAC-BSA in Waynesboro, VA. Paying early will help ensure your Scouts get enrolled in their first choice merit badge classes. We encourage all units to pay before the May 1 to receive the early bird discount. The on-line system allows us to track individual Scout s learning performance, eliminates the blue card system and generates an online papertrail for us to make sure you know what requirements are completed. Unit leaders will also be able to use this system for training registration and many additional unit management features including being able to print personalized class schedules for each Scout, track completed requirements, print reports & much more!!!

TIMBER MOUNTAIN PROGRAM The Timber Mountain Program (TMP) is an all day program designed for new Scouts coming to Boy Scouts for the first time to work on basic outdoor skills. If a Scout has already attained the rank of Second Class this program may be of little help. The program concentrates on teaching basic Scout skills and will help Scouts in mastering skills in camping, cooking and first aid. Scouts will have the opportunity to learn many Scout skills, such as fire building, cooking, the patrol method and hiking. The Timber Mountain Program emphasizes the patrol method to prepare young Scouts to be an integral part of their troop s program. Scouts will spend all the program hours with their Timber Mountain Patrol. Based on Scouts ability they will either be participating in the first or second class swim program. Each patrol will go on a daylong hike that focuses on hiking and outdoor skills. Our goal is to make sure that each Scout has a sense of accomplishment. As with merit badge sessions, Scouts are expected to attend each day of the week. There will be a special meeting of all TMP participants on Sunday evening in the Eppard shelter. There is a $15 fee for each Scout in TMP which is collected at registration which pays for the following expenses: Program Supplies Food supplies for the daylong hike Timber Mountain Patch What should a Timber Mountain Scout bring? Pencil and paper to take notes Canteen or water bottle Day pack for five mile hike Pocketknife (No Sheath Knives!) Thursday Evening Program: Cooking in Camp with patrols Hobo Meal Complete Photography merit badge requirements More knots and lashings

6 Camp Shenandoah Leaders Guide AQUATICS PROGRAM AREA SWIMMING MERIT BADGE The Swimming Merit Badge focuses on swimming for fitness and safety. Scouts must pass the swim test on Sunday after check-in. They will need to bring a belt, long pants, a long sleeve button-up shirt, socks, and shoes - all of which will get wet. LIFESAVING MERIT BADGE The Lifesaving Merit Badge is a good merit badge for older Scouts who are strong swimmers. It teaches the basics of reach, throw, row, and go. They will learn rescues with and without rescue equipment. Scouts should have completed the Swimming Merit Badge to take this merit badge. ROWING MERIT BADGE Rowing is a skill that is not very common anymore. Scouts will learn about the different types of rowboats and different ways that boats are made. Rowing, feathering, backwatering, and pivots are all covered with the Scouts. They will learn how to use the rowboat as a lifesaving device as well as how to deliver a passenger to a dock. Participants must be classified as a swimmer. CANOEING MERIT BADGE This merit badge introduces a Scout to the basic skills of canoeing. Students learn the parts of the canoe and paddle as well as safety rules. Scouts learn how to solo canoe as well as tandem canoeing with their buddies. At the end of this course, Scouts should be able to maneuver a canoe in a straight line on a flat-water lake. Participants must be classified as a swimmer. 2 ND & 1 ST CLASS SWIM PROGRAM Swimming is an important self-preservation skill and has long been seen as a basic Scouting skill. Being a swimmer is now a First Class requirement, so it is crucial that Scouts learn how to swim. This program is developed to meet the Scout s individual needs and follows the BSA suggested progression in the teaching of skills. We will complete as much of the Second and First Class swimming requirements as possible.

7 Camp Shenandoah Leaders Guide MILE SWIM, B.S.A. This program is designed to encourage the use of swimming for fitness. Adult and Scout participants take the swim test on Sunday and then have three more days of training before they swim the mile. They swim the eighth mile, the quarter mile, the half mile, and then the full mile. The full mile will be done in open water, and Scouts can choose to do the half mile in open water. Staff will guard the shorter distances, but the swimmer needs to provide a rower for their open water swims. There will be a meeting on Monday at 5 pm for all participants to explain the program, though Scouts can still swim their eighth of a mile earlier in the day. Scouts can swim during any program time, including free swims and early bird swims. KAYAKING MERIT BADGE NEW FOR 2012 Learn the basic principles of using the kayak and end the week spending Friday with the SHAZ Friday program using the skills they learned navigating down the river through Class I & II rapids! $20 paid at registration fee for participating in the program. WOODCARVING MERIT BADGE After a review of safety rules, Scouts learn about the different types of wood and the uses of each type of wood. Other skills can include sharpening knives, detailed carving and using a wood chisel. This training is classroom led. Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants: Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster and Troop Committee members. OUTDOOR LEADER SKILLS Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program. Training in outdoor skills is recommended before taking Scouts on outings. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start and guide a program the right way. Completion of this course is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters and Venturing Crew Advisors. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The Journey to Excellence scorecards strongly encourages this training. TROOP C.O.P.E. 21 Camp Shenandoah Leaders Guide CHAPTER 5: EVENING ACTIVITIES AND TWILIGHT RECREATION This element of our program is geared toward challenging your boys in friendly competition and fun activities. We understand that after a long day of classes, the Scouts are ready to have some fun. The schedule for these activities is finalized during Staff week, so your unit can expect a schedule at the first SM/SPL meeting. AFTER DINNER ACTIVITIES: Informational meetings for First Year Campers, Quartermasters, Chaplains Aides and Senior Patrol Leaders are held on Sunday evening following dinner. FRONTIER PROGRAM- TUESDAY EVENING Join us at Fort Robinson for stories and frontier tales. Or have a troop campfire in your own site, where your patrols can practice skits and songs. Remember only one skit per unit at the Friday campfire so here is the chance for all your Scouts to perform. Invite a troop from another council to join you or a few staff members, or just do it on your own. DESSERT COOK OFF - TUESDAY EVENING See how your top chef stacks up against your fellow campers for the dessert cook-off at the Eppard shelter 8:30PM. (Hint hint: you will need to bring your own secret ingredients.) ORDER OF THE ARROW BROTHERHOOD CEREMONY TUESDAY EVENING Brotherhood Ceremony at the OA ring at 9:00pm. VESPERS SERVICE AT LOCKHART CHAPEL WEDNESDAY EVENING The chapel is available for group or individual use at any time. A camp-wide vespers service will be held on Wednesday evening at 8:30 p.m. We encourage all units and scouters to attend this service remember a Scout is Reverent! CAMPSITE COOKING - THURSDAY EVENING On Thursday evening, troops will cook in their respective campsites with food provided by our kitchen staff. The ingredients provided will be for a foil dinner hamburger patty, potatoes, onions, and peppers. If you wish to adapt these items for something different, you will need to provide your own equipment and ingredients. Troops are encouraged to join with other troops for the evening for a joint campfire program and fellowship. TWILIGHT RECREATION STATIONS MOUNTAIN BOARDS Shred the trails with our fleet of mountain boards! We ve got helmets, pads and 4 wheeled all terrain skateboards to challenge your troop for an EXTREME evening activity! ORIENTEERING Challenge your Scouts with our multi-stage orienteering course.

22 Camp Shenandoah Leaders Guide GEOCACHING Try to find the caches at camp with our gps devices and a few hints. Can your troop solve the mystery by locating all the caches? KNOT CONTEST-TIMBER MOUNTAIN The Knot-tying competition will occur at the Timber Mountain Area at 4 pm on Tuesday. Each troop should send two Scouts to represent the troop. When the Timber Mountain Staff announces the name of a knot, your Scouts will work together to tie the knot. The first troop to tie the knot will receive three points, the second troop will receive two points, and the third troop will receive one point. The competition will consist of approximately a dozen knots. The troop with the most points wins. SWIMMING BATON RELAY-AQUATICS Bring your fastest Non-Swimmer, Beginner and Swimmer to the Aquatics Baton Relay for a challenging intertroop team race! We ll keep it safe, but you re going to have some serious obstacles along the way! MARKSMANSHIP-SHOOTING SPORTS Immediately after lunch, the Rifle Range will be open for one member of each troop to participate in the rifle competition. Each Scout will get one block of ammunition and will follow the instruction of the Range Master on how the competition will work. ARCHERY SHOOT-SHOOTING SPORTS Right after lunch, send a troop representative to the Archery Range for the archery competition. Scouts will have the opportunity to shoot five arrows each at two targets. The far targets will be worth twice the points of the near targets. RECYCLING COMPETITION In an effort to follow the principles of Leave No Trace, Camp Shenandoah will be again sponsoring a Recycling Competition. Troops should collect as much aluminum as possible throughout the week. Cans may come from any source except from another troop. All cans must be cleaned and should be turned in between 5:00 and 5:15 pm on Friday. Rankings will be based on the total weight of the cans brought in divided by the number of Scouts in the troop.
