2018 Cub Scout Day Camp Information Guide
We at Camp Birch would like to thank you for joining us for Cub Scout Day Camp. This year is very special for us marks the 80 th year that Camp Hugh Taylor Birch has been in operation. Back in 1938, Camp Birch started as a 30-acre plot that was donated by a successful lawyer and philanthropist Hugh Taylor Birch. The Boy Scouts in the area finally had a property of their own that could be used for all things Scouting. Over the years our property has expanded, and many people have started their journey of leadership right in our home! We feel like Camp Birch is home for many people s Scouting adventure. This Cub Scout Day Camp will be filled with excitement, advancement, and fun! As we blast off into a New Frontier, Camp Birch will be our center for Astronaut Training. Each crew will work through challenges together, learn new things, build on old skills, and boldly go where no Cub Scout has gone before. We are looking forward to seeing you at camp this summer. Let s make this an exciting summer together and keep our Scout Spirit shining bright! The Camp Birch Staff
Things to Bring To make sure that you are prepared for whatever may come, here is a small list of things that each person should bring with them: - Water Bottle - Rain Gear - Swimsuit - Towel - Sunscreen - Bug Spray - Backpack - Closed Toe Shoes - Hat Medical Forms Anyone who will be participating in activities must have a BSA Medical Form. This includes parts A and B. This is for the safety of all participants, youth and adult, to ensure that in the event of any situation the proper care can be provided. The medical forms must be turned in at check-in. They will be returned to your leadership, and are to be kept with the participant s group at all times. We ask that you give us a copy, not the original. It is easier for your personal record keeping to hold onto the original. Medication at Camp Parents and unit leaders will be responsible for any medications required while at camp. This helps make sure that there are no delays or unexpected issues. If there are any temperature control requirements for medications, please inform the medical staff upon check-in so we can accommodate. Or the camp director in advance at ben.honefanger@scouting.org. Dietary Restrictions If any of your participants have any dietary restrictions, please note it on their medical form as well as during registration in the Special Needs box. We want to ensure that everyone is able to have plenty of food during their stay at Camp Birch. We also understand that some people prefer to take care of their own dietary restrictions. If that is the case, we are unable to store food for those with dietary restrictions who choose to bring their own. If there are any specific requirements for dietary restrictions please contact the Camp Director, Ben Honefanger at ben.honefanger@scouting.org.
Qualified Leadership This is a reminder for all units that while at Camp your unit must meet the minimum number of leaders for the BSA Youth Protection Guidelines. All unit leaders must be registered adults in the Boy Scouts of America and be current with their Youth Protection Training. Driving Policy Camp Birch has a strict no driving policy. This is in place to protect our participants and to minimize the risk of potential accidents. This includes people with state issued handicap placards. We do have specific handicapped spaces in our parking lot. Hazing, Bullying, and Abuse Camp Birch has a zero-tolerance policy for hazing, bullying, intimidation, and abuse. If you see or suspect any of this type of activity, report it to the Camp Director immediately. Tobacco The Boy Scouts of America discourages the use of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vaporizers. Anyone under the age of 18 is not permitted to possess or use any tobacco or e-cigarette products. For adults who use these products, please keep it out of sight of any youth, staff or other leaders, and a minimum of 50 feet away from any building. Animals in Camp Camp Birch is nestled in a very wonderful area surrounded by nature preserves and protected land. This means we have a lot of wildlife around us. Please do not hurt, handle, or try to move any of the wildlife. If you have any wildlife issues please inform the Camp Director as soon as possible so the issue can be resolved. Also, please make sure that no animals are being taken to our Nature Lodge, we are not an equipped rehabilitation center. Participants, leaders, and families are not allowed to bring any pets to camps. Siblings Siblings who are Cub Scout aged can register, pay, and participate in the activities. All young siblings must be accompanied by a parent and are not able to take part in the activities (there may be a cost for meals for those younger siblings). These activities are designed to be age appropriate for the Scouts. Older siblings can assist as Den Chiefs for the group, but remember they are there to help, not
participate. We want to make sure that all our Cub Scouts have the best possible experience. Remember all siblings must have BSA Medical Forms. Dining Hall Our dining hall is not just a place to grab a bite to eat, it's also a program area full of fun and fellowship. Every day, you and your Scouts will get lunch and a special Dining Hall program. If you would prefer to bring your own lunch, we ask that you still eat in the Dining Hall so you don t miss out on the fun. Each table has 8 seats, at least one for an adult leader. Attached to our Dining Hall are modern bathrooms with showers. Trading Post During your stay at Camp, we invite you to stop in at our Trading Post. We have special Camp Birch merchandise, a selection of camping supplies, snacks, and many other goodies you may want during your stay with us. We take cash as well as credit or debit cards. For the convenience of you and your youth, we also offer the option to load and use gift cards. The use of gift cards may help prevent loss of cash for Scouts. Once a gift card is loaded with funds, the card is good in the Camp Birch Trading Post or the Council Scout Store. Weather We will be holding Day Camp rain or shine. We ask that you be prepared for any weather that may come our way. Some activities may get altered due to the weather. If the weather gets bad, we will make sure everyone is accounted for in the Dining Hall and follow an alternate program for the time necessary. Other than rain, another condition to be prepared for is heat. Be sure that everyone in your group stays hydrated, even you. Camperships We want all Scouts to be able to come to camp, and money should not get in the way of that. If a Scout and their family cannot afford to cover all of the camp fees, we have a Campership fund that can help offset costs. The Camperships Application along with the requirements to qualify can be found at Just because an application is turned in, does not mean that the funds will be awarded. Campership Applications are due to the Council office by March 23.
