DON T FORGET, CAMPOREE IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN! DO NOT TURN IT INTO A CHORE. I. General Information We are lucky to be able to hold this year s Camporee in the Recompence Shore Campground, a short drive from LL Bean s Discovery Park, in Freeport, Maine. The Scout-O-Rama will be held in Discovery Park during the day on Saturday. The scouts and leaders will travel from Recompence to downtown Freeport early Saturday morning for the all Scout parade. Lunch on Saturday will be unit prepared/provided bag lunches or can be purchased from several local vendors. Units may choose to return to the campsites for some free-time, Merit Badge work, dinner, an interfaith service and a campfire. Sunday morning, units will check out at their leisure. There is no firewood available on site, so you will need to bring in any you might need for your own use. Do not bring firewood from out-of-state and be sure there is no metal (nails) in the wood you burn. Fires must be contained in above ground rings, or provided campfire sites. 3 A scout is obedient. We are privileged to be able to use the facilities provided by our host, but in doing so, we must obey certain restrictions that are imposed on us to protect our host s properties. In fact, they fit right into Leave No Trace Scouting -- if you carry it in, carry it out (especially your trash)! Please read the list of DOs and DON Ts. Follow the rules as good scouts and citizens, in the end the rules should have no adverse affect on our Spring Camporee. Saturday activities will be held in Discovery Park. LL Bean has partnered with Pine Tree Council to host this Scout-O- Rama event. We will caravan from Recompence Saturday morning, to Freeport, for a Scout Parade. Scout-O-Rama, and other LL Bean events. The stores in Freeport will be open to the public and anticipate many Scouts and potential scouts to be in town and at the demonstrations. Use of the buddy system and wearing of the uniform, for our scouts, will be very important. March 22, Pine Tree Council Scout-O-Rama Spring Camporee Leader s Guide Page 3 of 15

MEDICAL FACILITIES Each unit should have its own first aid kit. Ambulance response is less than 5 minutes away. There are several medical facilities within a short drive of both venues. EQUIPMENT Each unit is required to provide all equipment required to participate in the Camporee. That includes all tents, stoves, cooking and eating items, and all materials that go into camp gadgets, Gateway materials, water, etc. You will need your troop flag for the parade, but you should not bring your American Flag or State of Maine flag to the parade. Latrines and port-a-potties will be available. An equipment list for the patrols / dens that are overnight camping is provided as a guideline. Units should review equipment requirements with their youth. LOADING AND UNLOADING EQUIPMENT, PEOPLE, AND PARKING Be patient. If you have any participants in your unit that have a special need or mobility issue, please bring it to the attention of the adult Parking Advisor. Remember that the staff is made up of volunteers, youth and adult, and they will have complete authority in any matter in which a dispute arises. On rare occasions, unfortunately, we have adults who disregard the directions and instructions of our staff members while they try to carry out their assigned tasks of directing traffic and coordinating parking, please do not let that person be you. Vehicle parking will be provided in designated areas. One vehicle per unit will be allowed in the campsite, at a time. Off load your vehicle as quickly as possible and then immediately relocate the vehicle to the parking area. Successfully moving everyone to Freeport on Saturday morning will require our units to be ready to go on time and a large dose of patience from everyone. UNITS WILL ENHANCE THE LOADING AND UNLOADING OF EQUIPMENT BY FOLLOWING SOME SIMPLE RULES: Plan your trip and vehicle loading and unloading prior to arriving Youth and Adults should be prepared to carry their PERSONAL GEAR to and from their campsites. All vehicles must be parked in the proper parking area as directed by the staff. Only one vehicle, per unit, at a time will be permitted in the camping are. Quickly off load and then move the vehicle to the parking area, DO NOT KEEP VEHICLES IN THE CAMP AREA WHILE YOU SET UP! Each unit needs to plan enough vehicles to be able to move all their youth, adults and unit flag to/from Freeport on Saturday UNIFORMS The Class A uniforms should be worn at all times during the Camporee. However, Activity (Class B) Uniforms may be worn while in the campsites and during the Sunday morning activities. The shirts worn must be scouting-theme appropriate. Class A uniforms are required for all assemblies, the Parade, the Scout-O-Rama and the campfire Saturday night. Individuals participating in Order of the Arrow activities should bring the appropriate uniform items. DRUGS AND ALCOHOL Drugs and alcohol are not permitted at any time. Standard rules from the Guide to Safe Scouting apply with respect to prescription medications. The presence of illegal drugs or alcohol may necessitate a call to local law enforcement. ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES: Since the Camporee is geared towards the use of scout outdoor and camping skills, there are advancement opportunities for all involved. It is the unit s responsibility to be prepared for the sign off, documentation, or recognition of these advancement opportunities. There are some Merit badge opportunities available but spots are limited. Scouts MUST preregister for these. PLAN WELL, BE PREPARED, HAVE FUN, AND REMEMBER, LEAVE-NO-TRACE CAMPING IS THE RULE No site is ideal, and all sites are subject to Leave no Trace, but Troop 45 and LL Bean have provided us with two great venues for our Camporee. We are very excited to be able to use these facilities. March 22, Pine Tree Council Scout-O-Rama Spring Camporee Leader s Guide Page 5 of 15

II. Pre-Registration and Registration Process PRE-REGISTRATION IS ESSENTIAL FOR ALL UNITS. Since this is a Council-wide event and a large attendance is expected, it is important for the Camporee staff to have an accurate count of heads and units so that we can prepare sites and plan for the logistics of such a large event. LL Bean is providing special giveaways for scouts that have pre-registered. It is also essential to help limit the confusion and stress while checking in on Friday night. So, this requires planning on your part. Please pre-register and complete the LL Bean Participant Agreement form, both documents can be found at: (note: several youths can be included on one LL Bean form) Please let the registration staff know of ANY intentions your unit may have for early departure, so we may better prepare for you. This should be done as soon as possible upon arrival, or better yet, upon pre-registration. FEES The cost of this event is only $10.00 for overnight youth and adults because LL Bean and Recompence Shore Campground is heavily subsidizing the event. OTHER REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS March 22, Pine Tree Council Scout-O-Rama Spring Camporee Leader s Guide Page 8 of 15

All units are required to check in with the registration staff upon arrival, even if you have pre-registered. All units participating in this Camporee will be required to provide an updated roster of participants (youth and adult) if changes have been made to the original registration form. Each unit leader is responsible for and should have in their possession the proper permission slips (including the LL Bean participation agreement) and medical release forms for each youth participant attending. Once in your appointed site, please re-confirm the total number of youth and adults signed-in, on site, at the Friday evening Cracker Barrel. This re-check is necessary for safety / evacuation requirements, head-counts, etc. Two-deep leadership and use of the buddy system must be strictly enforced throughout the Camporee and especially during the Freeport events. Units not having the above information may not be permitted to check-in. Units without a current Charter will not be allowed to participate. III. Parade The parade will begin at 9AM. We will line up (alphabetically, by District) on Grove Street. Park in any of the lots or the garage on Depot Street. Scouts (youth and leaders) should be in Class A uniforms, with OA sashes. Bring your unit flags, but leave your American and State of Maine flags in the campsite. Unit flags will be displayed on the stage and can remain there throughout the day. 11 V. Campfire CAMPFIRE PROGRAM Each unit is encouraged to participate in providing entertainment for the camp wide campfire. Let the OA know, at the Cracker Barrel, what skit, song or cheer your troop would like to do. Don t forget the 4Ss and bring your Songs, Stunts, and Stories. Our Master of Ceremonies will provide the Showmanship! Units are encouraged to let their patrols practice prior to Camporee, a great activity for troop meetings. Let s make this the best fellowship and fun, with great skits, songs, and run-ons. Campfires are for the enjoyment of all attending and should be run in observance of the Scout Oath and Law. All song/skit/stunt/run-on participation should be pre-screened by the unit s adult leaders. VI. Associated Activities and Competitions LAND NAVIGATION PATROL CHALLENGE There will be an ongoing patrol Land Navigation challenge. To enter, patrols of 6-8 scouts must present themselves at the Camporee information booth. They must BE PREPARED to travel a course using map and compass and orienteering skills that will be between 1 and 3 miles. The exercise will be timed. Prizes and bragging rights to the fastest patrols. This challenge can be started any time between noon and 3:30 on Saturday or 9:00 and 11:00 on Sunday. Expect the course to take between 45 minutes and an hour ORDER OF THE ARROW The Order of the Arrow may be conducting events during the Camporee. These activities, as with most OA events, are run by the chapters represented at the Camporee. Questions regarding these events should be directed to your chapters chiefs and advisors. Those attending Order of the Arrow activities should be uniformed appropriately. PIONEERING TROOP COMPETITION On Saturday afternoon, there will be a Pioneering Troop competition. The competition will be to build an A-Frame Racer, and successfully navigate a predefined course at Camporee. Each Troop will submit a Pioneering Patrol. Each Troop is required to bring all needed materials as described below in the A-Frame Racer Guidelines. Points in this competition will be given based on A-Frame Racer design, tightness of lashings, workability, teamwork, spirit, time taken to navigate the course, and verbal presentation given by each Troop s Pioneering Patrol Leader. Pioneering Competition Rules Only one patrol shall represent each Troop during the competition. Each patrol shall be compromised of scouts representing each rank available in that Troop. The intention is the Pioneering Patrol be comprised of scouting ranks for the Troop they are representing. There is no limit to the total number of scouts from the Troop that can participate in the Pioneering Patrol. Each patrol should have officers in place like any other scouting patrol. It is highly recommended that they meet and practice before CAMP-O-REE. March 22, Pine Tree Council Scout-O-Rama Spring Camporee Leader s Guide Page 11 of 15

Each patrol shall hand carry all needed wood and rope to the competition area. NO DRAGGING ITEMS OR WHEELED TOOLS ALLOWED The A-Frame Racer shall be built at the competition site. NO PREASSEMBLED ITEMS ALLOWED. Use rope for Knots and Lashings only. NO DOWELS, SCREWS, PEGS, WIRE, ETC. ALLOWED. NO HAND OR POWER DRIVEN TOOLS ALLOWED FOR ANY PORTION OF THE COMPETITION. Each member of the patrol shall have a specific duty while building the A-Frame Racer and should be prepared to explain to the judges (if asked) how their duty contributes to the overall patrol success. It is imperative that every scout within the patrol show scout spirit and team work. The A-Frame Racer is to be manned by 1 scout. Each Patrol will be required to navigate a course with their A-Frame Racer, and will be timed. The total time taken to navigate the course will affect the final score. If the A-Frame Racer Scout touches the ground during the course navigation, the patrol will lose points. The following pages represent one example of an A-Frame Racer the patrol could build for the competition. Each patrol is allowed to design and build any A-Frame racer they choose, as long as their design follows the rules specified here. The winner of the competition will be announced at the SundaY S Closing Ceremony. Remember to practice and bring your best game! A Frame Racer Guidelines Competition Objective The objective of this activity is for each Patrol to construct an A-Frame using lashing poles and rope and then to use that A-Frame, with four guy lines, to walk a member of the patrol through a predefined course approximately 25 feet in length. Participants Each Pioneering Patrol should have at least five members. Patrol members should be representative of the different ranks available within their Troop. Pioneering patrols comprised of all senior scouts will be strongly discouraged. Materials The Pioneering Patrol should provide their own: 2 lashing poles about 3 inches in diameter and 12 feet long 1 lashing pole about 3 inches in diameter and 7 feet long 3 one-quarter inch lashing ropes 15 feet long 2 one-quarter inch guy line ropes about feet long (note that shorter ropes can be substituted as long as they can be tied together to make a total length of feet Course Layout March 22, Pine Tree Council Scout-O-Rama Spring Camporee Leader s Guide Page 12 of 15

The course will include straight sections and turns. All patrols will be encouraged to complete the entire course and will be timed. Instructions Using only the materials listed above, you are to construct an A-frame.. Your A-frame should have four guy lines attached to the top, each about feet in length. When your A-frame is complete, move it to the beginning of the course. To traverse the course, stand your A-frame up and hold it up using at least one Scout on each guy line. Choose a Scout to ride in the A-frame with his feet on the cross member and one hand on each of the side members. The riding Scout may shift his weight in any way but he may not touch the ground. Scouts who are holding the guy ropes may be inside the course if necessary. By shifting the weight of the riding Scout and alternately pulling.
