1 Jan. 11, 2016 Memo: Camp Counselor/Staff Applications To: 4-H Teen Leaders (14 years of age by Jan. 1, 2016) From: Danielle Venable, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development Oklahoma County Taylor Harbuck, Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development Noble County Lindsey Miner, Extension Educator, FCS/4-H Youth Development Noble County Topic: Summer Camp: Counselor/Staff Applications are Due Feb. 26, 2016! Noble & Oklahoma County Jr. 4-H Summer Camp will be May 31 st June 3 rd at Saints Grove Campground located 11 miles east of Stillwater, OK. Camp Staff & Counselors will depart for camp on May 31st to set up the camp ground & Campers arrive on that day around 3 pm. We will have approximately 16 leadership positions available for 4-H ers at camp. Everyone in a leadership position will be involved in the planning of camp, including theme selection and program design. Determine which of the following you would like to apply for and return the enclosed application by February 26th! There will be a fee of $40 that must be paid prior to camp. Indicate on the application in what role(s) you are interested in serving. Eligibility: 14 of age and older as of 1/1/16 Be enrolled 4-H Member as of 1/16/16 Youth & Parental and/or Guardian Signatures Required. Responsibilities Camp Counselors/Staff 4-H ers selected as camp counselors will attend the full week of camp. They will be responsible for the campers in their cabins at all camp functions. They will be the leaders during camp competitions, and most importantly, these individuals will be responsible for making sure all the 4-H campers have the time of their life. Mandatory attendance is required for both the Planning Meeting April 14 th and Camp Training May 21st. We will be meeting at the Pizza Hut in Guthrie on April 14 th from 5:30 8 pm. The Camp Training will be conducted at the Oklahoma County OSU Extension Office, Oklahoma City, OK. More information will be available at a later date. For a detailed description of the duties for these two positions refer to the next page. 4-H Staff responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following. Camp Ground Maintenance On the day you have campground maintenance you will be responsible for making sure the bathrooms are cleaned and trash is picked up.

2 Kitchen Duty On the day you have kitchen duty your main responsibility will be in the kitchen helping with preparation of meals, snacks, etc. Your supervisor will be the camp cook. Craft Corner On the day you have craft duty you will report to the craft area whenever it is open and when the adult volunteer needs your help. Your supervisor will be the adult volunteer in charge of crafts. General Duties Be observant! Are things running smoothly? Does someone need assistance? Does something need to be done? You are part of the team designed to make camp fun, safe and a positive experience for everyone!!! Teaching Duties Each leadership position will be responsible for teaching or assisting with a workshop or activity. Counselor responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following. Getting Acquainted Orientation and get acquainted activities with campers. Covering the camp rules, the schedule and helping campers get settled in the cabins. Daily Routine Observing the campers to make sure they are eating well, taking care of their personal hygiene, resting, staying hydrated, and participating in scheduled activities. Involvement Working with campers to help them stay on schedule and engaged in activities. Helping campers handle conflicts, home-sickness, and relationships with other campers. Teaching Duties Each leadership position will be responsible for teaching or assisting with a workshop or activity.

3 4-H Summer Camp Camp Staff/Counselor Application 1. If you need more room to answer any question, please feel free to attach another sheet of paper. Please be detailed in your answers; don t assume we know about your 4-H activities and experiences. 2. We must receive your application by February 26, If you are interested in a leadership role at camp. Teens selected as camp Counselors and Staff will interview on March 21 st at 5:30 p.m. at the Pizza Hut in Guthrie off of I-35 and will be notified by March 28 th. 3. The number of counselor/staff spaces is limited. All who are chosen are required to attend the mandatory counselor planning meeting on April 14, 2016 & Counselor/Staff Training May 21st, (Individual circumstances will be taken into consideration if notified prior to the planning meeting and camp training.) 4. Qualifications for camp counselors and staff members: Fourteen years of age and older as of 1/1/16 Be an enrolled 4-H member as of 1/1/16 Attend camp planning meeting April 14 th and camp counselor/staff training May 21 st. (Individual circumstances will be taken into consideration if notified prior to the planning meeting and camp training.) The applications will be reviewed closely. Failure to meet the qualifications listed on item number #4 above forfeits eligibility to attend camp and serve as a camp counselor and/or staff on the Teen Leadership team for the Quad County Jr. Camp. (Individual circumstances will be taken into consideration if advanced notification is provide prior to the planning meeting and camp training.) Other programs and activities in which you have participated that would assist you in being prepared to work closely with 4-H campers and the adult leadership team serving as a Counselor or Staff member. (In addition to 4-H, list your involvement with other organizations, church, etc.)

6 Essay Questions: Choice 3 out of the essay questions 1-6 to be answered in detail. Question 7 is mandatory and must be answered. Please be thorough in your answers. Short interviews will be required for all applicants. 1. As you are sharing yours ideas for your cabins skit some of the campers continuously interrupting you by making jokes and causing interruptions. How do you handle this situation?

7 2. How would you address this scenario: Several campers shared with you that another camper has been bullying them. What is your plan of action?

8 3. What is your vision of a fun and memorable camp that will keep 4-H members excited about staying involved in 4-H in the future?

9 4. A camper in your cabin is very quiet and never joins in with any of the activities. This camper is not causing problems and just isn t involved like we would want our junior campers while at camp. How do you get them involved, have fun and meeting the other campers?

10 5. One of your campers shares with you that their money or personal property has been stolen or damaged from their suitcase or bunk bed area. What do you do?

11 6. You have been talking allot with a counselor or staff member from another county, and you really like them. You look forward to dancing with them later that evening. However, you are scheduled to work the craft corner during the dance. What are your thoughts?
