1 Boy Scout Troop 39 Matthews United Methodist Church 801 South Trade Street Matthews, NC Scouts and Parents, Attached is information for this year s summer camp at Camp Powhatan in Virginia. I have included a packing list with camp contact information for you to keep. The following 3 forms are required to be completed and turned in by March 23, The first is the Troop Permission form. This form MUST BE completed by EVERY Scout. The second is the Camp Powhatan Information Sheet. This is not the permission slip, however, it does ask for much of the same information that the permission slip will ask for. This form too MUST BE completed by EVERY Scout. The third is the Camp Choice Form with the Powhatan and and Claytor Lake Merit Badge Choice Schedules attached. This will have to be completed and turned in with the other forms in order to secure your spot in the chosen program. The current cost for the week is $310 per scout. However, the Troop 39 Committee has graciously granted each Scout attending Powhatan a stipend of $185. So the total cost for the Base Summer Camp is $125 per Scout for the week. (That s Awesome!) All Base Summer Camp fees and forms are due on March 23, Additional/Optional program fees will be paid once your Scout has been confirmed in their program. No scout will be signed up for camp or merit badges until the fee has been paid in full. Scouts can pay in cash, by check or with Scout Bucks If a scout registers for summer camp and then cancels; the scout will be responsible for the entire fee ($310). Base Camp - Merit Badges: $ (+ Class Fees see merit badge list) Scouts can choose to do a traditional summer camp with merit badges. Please fill out the Merit Badge/Camp Choice form with all your information and circle Merit Badges. If you choose to do this, please complete the merit badge daily schedule by numbering your first, second and third choice per time period. In addition, please mark off any merit badges you have already earned. A scout must sign-up for merit badges during all six periods. Many have age and rank restrictions and some have minimal fees and will be added to the price of camp for the week. Please go the Camp Powhatan s website click on Camp Leader s Admin Guide, then onto the Merit Badge Pre-requisites and Advancement Guide for all the information Scoutmaster Frank Williams II scoutmastert39@gmail.com Charter Organization Rep Dan Latta dlatta@carolina.rr.com Committee Chair Joe Culpepper jculpepper@carolina.rr.com

2 2015 Summer Camp Info Letter 2/23/2015 High Adventure Camp Programs Option: Camp Powhatan offers a variety of High Adventure Programs that a Scout can choose to participate in for the week, in lieu of merit badges. This will be what they do exclusively for the week. Many of these programs have additional fees. The programs are listed and described below. If your Scout decides on one of these programs, please fill out the Merit Badge/Camp Choice form and circle the camp of choice. Once they have been secured a spot we will get any additional information and paperwork to you. There is limited number of spots in each program, so there is no guarantee that your Scout will get into any specific program. New River Adventure Option: $ (See Optional ATV and Pistol Programs) Open to all Scouts that turned 13 by January 2015 and a BSA swimmer. Scouts can choose to do the New River Adventure. This program combines teamwork, leadership, and confidence-building activities. They will participate in White Water Rafting, Water Canoeing, and The C.O.P.E. coarse (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience), plus an additional activity chosen by the group. Two of the additional activities are listed below. Optional Pistol Program is an additional $50 program fee. Optional ATV Program is an additional $50 program fee. High Knoll Trek Program: - $ (See Optional Program Cost) Open to all Scouts who will be 12 ½ and First Class by June 1st. This is a high adventure backpacking program that tackles the High Knoll Trail throughout the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation. Typical groups hike around seven miles each day, ending up at one of the backcountry camps. You will have fun on the trail, but remember that these activities require physical fitness because of their vigorous nature. The goal of the program is to provide the best possible backpacking experience with daily adventures and quality teambuilding experiences. Optional 1 day Whitewater Rafting is an additional $65 program fee. Mountain Man: $ Open to all Scouts 13 years old by camp and able to backpack gear 1 ½ miles Travel back in time to 18th Century Appalachian Virginia where a single shot muzzle loader, an axe, and a hunting knife were the only tools a man needed to survive. At Mountain Man, Scouts will dress, eat, and live like the Long Hunters who explored, trapped, and eventually settled Virginia's western frontier. They will cook all of their meals as a patrol and cook most of them over an open fire using Dutch ovens and cast iron cookware (equipment is provided). They will also learn to build a fire using flint and steel, build a Russell Green River sheath knife and sheath. After a safety course, shoot a.50 caliber muzzle-loading rifle and learn about survival, traps, and snares, edible plants, tracking and finger-weaving. Step back in time and enter the world of the Mountain Men. 2

3 2015 Summer Camp Info Letter 2/23/2015 Voyageur High Adventure Trek: $ Open to all Scouts that turned 13 by January 2015 and a BSA swimmer. Embark on a 5-day, 50-mile-plus canoe trip down the breathtaking New River. We are looking for a few stout mates who are ready to put their sense of adventure and their canoeing skills to the test. The boys will be able to demonstrate a marked improvement in canoeing abilities, gain an appreciation of nature s most powerful force water and learn and practice the principles of Leave No Trace camping. Discover what life must have been like for the 18th Century Voyageurs. Fish Lake Camp: $125.00: Open to all Scouts 13 years old by camp and a BSA swimmer. Fish Camp is an outpost camp, based at Camp Ottari on the Blue Ridge Scout Reservation. While at Fish Camp, participants have the opportunity to fish some great trout and smallmouth bass waters close to the Reservation. Scouts not only fish, they learn to fly cast, tie flies, and study the habitat and ecosystems of the fish they attempt to outwit. Learning more about the sport of fishing is also afforded if Scouts choose to earn the Fishing or Fly Fishing Merit Badge. A full week of fishing and learning in beautiful Southwestern Virginia is what Fish Camp is all about. Claytor Lake Watersports Merit Badge Option: $155.00: (See Optional Program Cost) Open to all Scouts 13 years old by camp and a BSA swimmer. Located on a brand new facility situated on the 4,500-acre highland reservoir of Claytor Lake, this camp caters to older Scouts, particularly those interested in earning aquatic merit badges. Scouts will spend the week doing various water activities. This is the first camp to offer the Personal Watercraft Safety as a BSA pilot program, and is required for all participants attending Claytor Lake that wish to use PWC. In addition, all Scouts attending Claytor Lake must take the Virginia s Boaters Safety Course. It is recommended doing this prior to camp. Visit Scout interested in this camp must complete the daily Claytor Lake Merit Badge Schedule by numbering their first, second, and third choice per time period. Optional 1 day Personal Watercraft Safety Course is an additional $60 program fee. Claytor Lake Wakeboarding Option: $ Open to all Scout 14 years old by camp and a BSA swimmer.
