Other guests may purchase T-shirts for $10 ($12 for 2X-6X) (IF you plan to purchase a shirt and want to reserve your size then please your preference to stownsend@northark.edu before October 8 th ). Early Registration Deadline: October 8, 2017 You may register on site; however, after 10/8/17 the price goes up to $25 per scout or sibling. Check in will be in the Dining Hall and will begin at 4:00 pm on Friday, October 20 th. (No early check-ins please). Those arriving on Saturday will need to check in at the Trading Post. If you are arriving on Saturday be very careful while in camp with your vehicle. Please check in, unload your equipment at your campsite, and park your vehicle at the designated parking area as quickly as possible. Check out will be before 11:00 am on Sunday, October 22 nd in the Dining Hall. 5 Pack Project Each pack is charged with the task of building a Rube-Goldberg chain reaction project. It must include at least 4 steps (5 bonus points for each extra successful step you add). The final goal is for your project to pop a balloon (the balloon you will pop will be provided at project time and will be taped to a location in the center of the floor). You will receive materials at check-in (see details on pages for rules, grading rubric, and other suggested tools to bring). Campground Details: A. Campsites and Parking 1. Your pack will share one campsite (you may be grouped with other packs based on the size of your unit). 2. You will set up your own tent and camp with your child. You need to provide all of your own equipment. 3. Each pack will have one campfire to share. Whichever ADULT starts the fire owns the fire and is responsible for putting it out. Scouts are not to play in the fire (regardless of rank) and what goes in the fire stays in the fire! 4. There are wooden platforms (8 x 8 ) for tents if you wish to use them. If you have a larger tent, you can always set it up on the ground there will be plenty of space. 5. You will drive to your campsite, unload your stuff, and then go park your car in the designated parking area. You may not leave your vehicle in camp it must be parked in the designated parking area at the bottom of the hill by 10 pm Friday night. Do not plan to store everything in your car, but know that you do not have to carry stuff too far either! It is a quick walk to your cars parking location, but a tough walk back because that is the uphill part! 6. Please remember that once you pass the Ranger's house the road into Camp Orr is one way. There will be signs posted pointing the way to check-in. B. Showers and water 1. There are flushable toilets and showers relatively close to each pack campsite, but not necessarily in each campsite. 2. There are Pit style toilets (outhouses) by every campsite. 3. There are water spigots near each pack campsite. C. Food: You will be responsible for your own meals: Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, and Sunday breakfast. D. Trading Post: Trading post will have some shirts, cups, knives, walking sticks, drinks and snack food for sale. E. Clothing 1. Class A uniforms are worn for flag ceremonies (twice on Saturday) and for Vespers on Sunday morning. (Wear T-shirts underneath to make it easy to transition to daytime play clothes). 2. Keep in mind that nights will be cool and days will be warm. Layers are best. Keep it comfortable! 3. Good walking shoes! And an extra pair won t hurt! F. Activities 1. Registration begins at 4 pm on Friday no early check-ins please. 2. Scouts will be separated based on ages for Saturday activities. 3. Plan to accompany your scout through the activities (if you have more than one then plan to stay with your youngest). Lions, Tigers, and siblings must have a parent with them at all times. 4. Bring your scout book along so that you can mark them as you get to them! 5. Sunday morning will start with a Vespers service. It will be quick and then you will be free to pack up and head home. G. All campers (adults, scouts, and siblings) must have a current A and B health form filled out and filed with your Cubmaster before camp. Your Unit Leader will need to present your unit health forms when they check in. However, health forms will be kept in your camp site over the weekend. H. Please help make sure your campsite is cleaner than when you arrived! The trash dumpster is behind the Dining Hall. We will also ask for help in cleaning up around the shower areas. Sunday before you leave please empty trash buckets in stalls into the larger trashcans in the breezeway. Remind your Scouts throughout the weekend 5

6 that we never drop our trash on the ground and that we always pick up trash we see (even if it belongs to someone else!). TRASH YOUR TRASH! I. Campground assignments will be provided after early registration ends. Campfire Skits: ALL campfire skits, jokes, songs, or other performances must be approved by a camp staff member. The camp staff members will review all materials during lunch on Saturday in the Dining Hall. Note: There will NOT be an opportunity to present a skit or song at campfire if you have not gone through the review process. Campfire will end with the Scout Vespers Song we encourage you to sing along. CLOSING CAMPFIRE SONG Scout Vespers (to the tune of "O Christmas Tree") Softly falls the light of day, While our campfire fades away. Silently each scout should ask: "Have I done my daily task? Have I kept my honor bright? Can I guiltless sleep tonight? Have I done and have I dared In everything to be prepared?" Siblings will need to stay with a parent for Saturday s activities. If only one parent is in attendance then the sibling will go to the same activities as the scout. If 2 parents are in attendance then the sibling may stay with the scout or go to a more age appropriate group with one parent. FRIDAY SCHEDULE 4:00 pm: Check in at the Dining Hall. NO early check-ins please. Please notify staff if anyone in your family has any allergies so that we can note it and notify the First Aid Officer. 8:00 pm 9:00 pm: Kick-Off in the Dining Hall for all leaders, parents, scouts, and siblings. Games will be set up and there will be prizes available. Winners will be announced at campfire on Saturday evening. Requirements: 1. Create an exploding craft stick reaction. 2. Make two simple pulleys, and use them to move objects. 3. Make a lever by creating a seesaw using a spool and a wooden paint stirrer. Explore the way it balances by placing different objects on each end. 4(B). Construct a real Rube Goldberg type machine to complete a task assigned by your den leader. Use at least two simple machines and include at least four steps. 8

9 STEM 12 (Bears): "Super Science": (By participating during this block of time, you will have completed all the necessary requirements to earn the Super Science Adventure Loop!) Requirements: 1. Make static electricity by rubbing a balloon or a plastic or rubber comb against another material, such as a fleece blanket or wool sweater. Explain what you learned. 2. Conduct one other static electricity investigation. Explain what you learned. 3. Do a sink-or-float investigation. Explain what you learned. 4. Do a color-morphing investigation. Explain what you learned. STEM 13 (Bears): "Robotics" Part 1: (By participating during this block of time, as well as during STEM 14, you will have completed all the necessary requirements to earn the Robotics Adventure Loop!) Requirements: 1. Identify six tasks performed by robots. 2. Learn about some instances where a robot could be used in place of a human for work. Research one robot that does this type of work, and present what you learn to your den. 3. Build a robot hand. Show how it works like a human hand and how it is different from a human hand. STEM 14 (Bears): "Robotics" Part 2: (By participating during this block of time, as well as during STEM 13, you will have completed all the necessary requirements to earn the Robotics Adventure Loop!) Requirement: 4. Build your own robot. STEM 15 (Webelos): Prepare yourself to become a Boy Scout (Repeat from memory Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout Motto, and Scout slogan; Explain Scout Spirit; Give the Boy Scout sigh, Salute and Handshake, where are they used.; Describe the First Class Scout badge, and tell what each part stands for, what is the significance?; Repeat from memory the Outdoor Code. Explain what it means; recite from memory the Pledge of Allegiance, what does it mean. Show how to tie a square knot, two half hitches, and a taut- line hitch. Explain how each knot is used. Show the proper care of rope by learning how to whip and fuse the ends of different kinds of rope. Demonstrate your knowledge of the pocketknife safety rules and the pocketknife pledge (Scouting Adventure Requirements 1A-E, 3A-C, 5A-B & 6) STEM 16 (Webelos): Build a model solar system; chart the difference between the planets so that the model is to scale. Use what you learn to explain the value of making a model in science. Create two circuits of three light bulbs and a battery, one in a series circuit, and one in parallel circuit. Explore safe chemical reactions with household materials. Use 2 substances and observe the reaction, use different amounts and observe. Explore properties of motion and answer the question, How does weight change the movement? (Adventures in Science Requirements 3C, 3E, 3G, 3H) STEM 17 (Webelos): Using tinder, kindling, and fuel wood, demonstrate how to build a fire, light the fire. After allowing the fire to burn safety, safely extinguish the flames with minimal impact to the fire site. Set personal nutritional goals. Prepare a balanced meal for your den or patrol; use one or more method to cook. We will be using Dutch oven, Camp stove, and Box oven. Demonstrate an understanding of food safety practices while preparing the meal. (Cast Iron Chef Requirements 1-3) STEM 18 (Webelos): Cover history of United States flag. Learn about and describe your rights and duties as a citizen, explain what it means to be loyal to your country. What is Rule of Law, how does it apply to you? Meet with a community leader discuss an important issue in your community. Plan an activity for your den without your den leader s help. Talk to a scout from another country to learn about scouting in their country. (Building A Better World Requirements 1-6) 9

10 Rube Goldberg Project Rules and Expectations Basic Rules: You are charged with the task of building a chain reaction project. It must include at least 4 steps (5 bonus points for each extra step you add). The final goal is for your project to pop a balloon (the balloon you will pop will be provided at project time and will taped to a location in the center of the floor). A kit will be provided to your pack at check-in*. You do NOT need to use every item in the kit! The kit will include the following: 2 paper towel rolls 10 wooden blocks (dominoes) 2 marbles 1 empty water bottle (you may add water) 2 cone shaped paper cups 1 golf ball 1 toy car 2-8 oz Styrofoam cups 2 16 oz plastic cups 1 (1 gallon) Ziploc 4 balloons 10 straws 2 nails 2 thumb tacks 10 large wooden Popsicle sticks 2 plastic spoons 4 rubber bands 1 wire coat hanger 1 sharpened pencil 1 CD 4 zip ties 1 roll of tape 4 sheets of paper 2 sheets of cardstock paper 1 small block of clay 1-18 pack empty egg carton 12 inch x 24 inch square of foil 6 feet of sewing thread 6 feet of yarn 6 feet of fishing line 2 wooden paint sticks *You may bring the following tools to use on the project: hammer, screwdrivers, hot glue gun, pocket knife, tape measure, and scissor. These tools will also be available for your use in the Dining Hall from 4:15 until 7:00 pm on Saturday. Please do not remove them from the Dining Hall so that other packs may use them also. 10

11 Grading Rubric: You will be graded based on the following grading scale: Following the rules (# of steps? Did it pop the balloon? Did you only use materials provided?) (25 points): out of 25 (bonus for extra steps) Teamwork (Did your pack work together?) (25 points): out of 25 Sportsmanship (Did you cheer for/encourage other teams? Were you kind?) (25 points) out of 25 Technical Stuff (25 points based on the following): Creativity in design (10 points): out of 10 Scientific/Engineering ability (5 points): out of 5 How sturdy was your project? (5 points): out of 5 Technical Ability (Does your project perform the same every time?) (5 points): out of 5 Winners will be announced at campfire on Saturday. Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) JOTA is the largest Scouting event in the world and will be happening at Camp Orr during Cub Adventure! JOTA uses amateur radio to link Scouts and hams around the world, around the nation, and in your own community. So, stop by the Dining Hall on Saturday (during free time only after 1 pm) to visit with scouts from around the world via ham radio! We also plan to visit with scouts from other countries during campfire on Saturday night. There is a cool patch you can earn for meeting scouts from other countries! Also, if you have a Boy Scout they can earn parts of the Boy Scout Radio Merit Badge at this event! 11
