The Headlamp December 2011 HAPPY CAMPING! Hi Everyone We hope that you ve all had a great start to your Guiding year and have been able to get the girls out camping already! Please? 2 What do you do outside of Guiding? Job and/or personally For the past 17 years I ve worked as an Office Manager for a Scrap Metal Yard in Kelowna, this may be one of the contributing factors in me joining and sticking with Girl Guides as I don t have any other females to interact with at work. What are some of the most interesting, enjoyable activities you have participated in? There is way too many to describe but both SOAR 2007 and 2011 were big highlights in my Guiding life. In 2007 we took a Patrol of Guides and they were from 5 different Units, we called ourselves the Okanagan Misfits. What is your most memorable moment (or two)? One memory that really sticks out in my mind is from a Sparks Division Camp that I was the RG at a few years ago, and I rented Pioneer costumes for the girls to dress up in so that we could take their picture and then put in a frame for their moms for Mothers Day. This tiny little Sparks in this dress spinning around saying I ve never been a Pioneer before she said it with such enthusiasm and was so happy. Name: Susan Zedel SVI Area Camping Advisor How long have you been involved in Guiding? I have been involved in Guiding for 12 years as an adult. I was a Brownie for 2 years as a girl, but the unit I was in never went camping. What branches of Guiding have you worked with? I started as both a Brownie leader and Guide leader when my daughters we in Brownies and Guides. After 4 years I moved on to Pathfinders for 2 more years. I started a Trex unit in Sep (Saanich Shores Trex) and have been with that unit since then. What positions have you held in Guiding? I was a District Camping Advisor for 6 years, then became South Vancouver Island Area Camping Advisor in October What community do you live in? Where in the province is it? What district and area is it in? I live in Brentwood Bay, BC a small community about 20 km from Victoria. The area is in Woodwyn District, in South Vancouver Island Area. What do you do outside of Guiding? Job and/or personally I work full time for the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (28 years with the ministry) and am a Professional Agrologist. My work involves seed and seedlings for reforestation. I have a BSc from UVic in Geography / Natural Resource Management from I have been married to Kryn for 27 years, have 2 daughters Jenna (21) and Hayley (18), who are both in university now. My hobbies are cycling, kayaking, hiking, windsurfing, and walking my dogs. Whenever possible my hobbies are combined with Girl Guides, mostly through Trex. What are some of the most interesting, enjoyable activities you have participated in? Participating in trainings with Guiders who also enjoy outdoor adventures, such as the Wilderness Technical Skills backpacking and kayaking trips. Then taking Trex girls on backpacking, kayaking and cycling trips.

Report on the Nova Scotia Explosion Camp As Submitted to the Monashee Area Newsletter by Sam Martens with Contributions by Lisa Schoepfner Nova Scotia 2011 Heritage Explosion was held at Camp Nedooae Musquodoboit Valley from August 11 to 20th and my friend Lisa and I, from the 1st Lake Country Pathfinders were selected by Province along with four other girls and two Guiders from BC to attend. The camp was to celebrate Nova Scotia Guiding s 100th Birthday and Guides were invited from across Canada and the world to join the celebration. Close to 300 Girl Guides and Girl Scouts attended camp with England having the largest international presence with approximately ten Patrols. The line-up of activities recognized the heritage of Girl Guides in Nova Scotia with traditional songs, crafts, sports and even an archaeological dig. On our out trip we explored Halifax and completed an "amazing-race" through the city. I fell in love with all the beautiful old buildings so much different than anything we have back home in Kelowna. Back on site we made some traditional sewing crafts for the children at the women's shelter in Halifax. Then we moved on to the archaeological dig which was an excavation site of a 100 year old NS Girl Guide camp. I didn t uncover any artifacts or arrowheads but it was fun to imagine Girl Guide camp a century ago. Imagine canoeing in a dress! My favorite activity was tidal bore rafting in the Bay of Fundy with waves that were over 14 feet high. Before the tidal bore rafting we explored the Burntcoat Head Lighthouse that explained how the tides worked and how the tidal bore rafting was possible. It was an interesting and thrilling experience! Thank you for sending us to such a fun camp!
Recipes While preparing for Under the Boughs and Rovent this winter plan for some light weight meals so you have more space to carry that extra pair of long underwear. Shepherd s Pie Dehydrate 1 lb of cooked & peppered (spiced) ground meat Dehydrate 1 cup frozen mixed veggies of your choice (or use 1/3 cup dried veggie mix from bulk section) 2 package of gravy or 1 of onion soup mix 2 package (1 package makes 4- ½ cup servings) of INSTANT Potato mix (flavoured if you like) 1/3 cup skim milk powder Cheddar cheese (shredded) Rehydrate meat and veggies separate. Boil 3 to 4 cups of water in big pot, add meat, veggies, skim milk & gravy, once heated well it should start to thicken, add 1 ½ package of potato and mix to the thickness you prefer (use the extra ½ package as needed), top with cheese. One Pot Taco Dehydrate 1 lb of cooked & peppered (spiced) ground meat Dehydrate 1 cup frozen mixed veggies of your choice I like the fajita mix (or use 1/3 cup dried veggie mix from bulk section) Dehydrate ½ tin of refried beans Dehydrate ½ cup of salsa 2 cups instant rice 1 to 2 packages of taco seasoning Cheddar cheese (shredded) Soft taco shells Rehydrate everything - in separate bags. Boil 2-3 cups water, add meat and veggies (and beans for true one pot cooking), add rice and taco seasoning simmer till most of water is gone and rice is cooked. Put mixture in taco, top with cheese and salsa, wrap and enjoy.
Crafts Ice Hanger What you will need: - Pie Plate - Water - Twine - Things from Nature (sticks, berries, rocks etc.) Step 1: Fill the pie plate with the water and line the outside of the water with the twine or yarn, make sure the string is in the water leaving the ends loose so that you can hang the Ice Hanger from a tree. Step 2: Arrange Nature objects in the center of the pan in a design you like. Step 3: Put your creation in the freezer or if it is cold enough outside put it outside to freeze. Step 4: Once frozen remove the ice creation from the pie plate, you can do this by putting the bottom of the pie plate in hot water. Step 5: Hang your Ice Hanger outside in a place where you can enjoy it until the weather warms.
Dress warm for the season and go outside to play!! Games Chariot Race Form players into teams of three. Two are horses and they link arms. The third is the charioteer and she holds the belts of the two horses. The charioteer has a ribbon or cloth hanging on her belt at the back. On a signal, teams manoeuvre around. The horses try to snatch the ribbons from the belts of other charioteers while twisting and turning to prevent their charioteer s ribbon from being snatched. Any team losing its ribbon must drop out. The winning team is either the last chariot in the game or the chariot which captures the most ribbons. VARIATION- Use two colours of ribbons. Teams with the same colour work together Search for the "Abominable Snowman" Cut two large foot prints out of exterior plywood. Strap on these "feet" and tramp through the snow, backtracking and walking over ice to add to the challenge. End the course near a warm-up hut or cabin and have a hot drink. Those who establish the course may want to erect a huge snowman at the end of the course
Camping Equipment Idea For all of use that never seem to have enough room in the back of our cars, vans or trucks to transport all the camping gear to and from camp, here is an idea to help utilize your space, thanks to Nathalie Seney! For instructions on how to make this wash stand and a few other camping items please see the separate attachments.
