Maple Syrup Days is an annual day program for all Scouts and Scouters run on consecutive Saturdays in late March and early April while the sap is running. The goal of Maple Syrup Days is to give Scouts the firsthand experience of selecting and tapping trees, harvesting sap, and evaporating and bottling maple syrup. It is also a superb opportunity to experience the wonders of the forest in the bold Wisconsin winter and spring. The program begins in the morning with a pancake breakfast and concludes late in the afternoon with a sample of Bear Paw syrup to take home. Program activities include: Pancake and maple syrup breakfast featuring our Famous Bear Paw Maple Syrup Lesson in tapping methods followed by a tree tapping exercise A trip to the woods to empty sap buckets Discussion of the history of maple syrup collection Understanding maple syrup and the evaporator Measuring water content, building and understanding a hydrometer Filtering and bottling maple syrup STEM Related programming Saturday Night Ice Cream Social Friday 7:00 pm Weekend Camper Arrival Begins 8:30 pm Welcome Meeting 9:00 pm STEM Programming 10:00 pm Quiet Time 11:00 pm Lights Out Saturday 7:00 am Wake Up 8:00 am Day Participant Arrival Begins 8 9 am Breakfast in the Dining Facility 9:00 am Day Programming Begins 12:00 pm Lunch in the Dining Facility 1:00 pm Day Programming Continues 3:30 pm Day Programming Ends 3:30 5:30 pm Free Time 5:30 pm Dinner in the Dining Facility 7:30 pm STEM Programming/Ice Cream Dessert 10:00 pm Quiet Time 11:00 pm Lights Out Sunday 7:00 am Wake Up 8:00 am Breakfast in the Dining Facility 9:00 am Pack up and do Good Turns 10:00am All Campers Checked Out Participants will all receive: Maple Syrup Days Uniform Patch Your very own 8 ounce bottle of Bear Paw Maple Syrup

Once you arrive at Camp, one leader should check in at the Dining Facility with Health Forms and medications. Once you have checked in, you will receive a schedule of events and a map indicating locations of all the various events. STEM participants will have a slightly different schedule than the Saturday Maple Syrup Days participants, so be sure not to mix the two up. STEM & Weekend participants will be directed by staff to their cabins. Troops may be split up to follow Youth Protection guidelines, but we will try to keep everyone together if possible. Campers stay in Albright Lodge, Saffran Lodge, or Torinus Lodge. Campsites can be available if your unit prefers. If you intend on staying in a campsite, please contact Jodi ahead of time. Once settled in, you can simply get comfortable and play some board games or take a stroll around Camp. There will be a Welcome Meeting on Friday night in the Dining Facility to help you and the staff prepare for the weekend activities. After the meeting, fun STEM related activities take place in the Dining Facility. Saturday Morning The Maple Syrup Days program is based on a Round Robin Concept, meaning you will be divided up into various groups and given a starting station. Every half hour, the whistle will blow, your signal to move to your next station on your schedule. At breakfast on Saturday, all participants will be given their schedule for the day. This will include dividing everyone up into groups. All effort will be made to keep Troops together. Meals All participants will be provided Saturday Breakfast and Lunch. STEM Weekend Participants will be provided Dinner on Saturday Night, Ice Cream Social on Saturday night and Breakfast on Sunday Morning. If you have food special needs or allergies, be sure to let the Maple Syrup Days Director know 3 weeks prior to event. Leaders Before leaving, a leader should check out with the Maple Syrup Days Registration desk to collect patches and your maple syrup. We ask that all leaders and Senior Patrol Leaders complete program evaluation and return to the Maple Syrup Days Registration Desk before you leave Camp.

STEM Weekend Check In is from 7 pm 9 pm on Friday night at the Bear Paw Dining Facility. If you will be arriving later than this, please contact the Maple Syrup Days Registration coordinator. Saturday Maple Syrup Days Participant Check In is from 8 am till 9am. We suggest being in the Dining Facility no later than 8:30 am if you wish to eat breakfast with us as the day program begins at 9:00 am sharp! Registration is on a first come first served basis. STEM Weekend Cost: $50 for both Scouts and Leaders Scouts and leaders can reserve space for the weekend STEM program by visiting the Bay-Lakes Council website and registering: March April 6-8 Saturday Day Program Cost: $20 for both Scouts and Leaders Scouts and leaders can reserve space for the weekend DAY program by visiting the Bay-Lakes Council website and registering: March 24 April 7 Use this guide in explaining the program to Scouts. Hold a meeting to check each Scout s gear before leaving for camp. Let us know ahead of time if any camper has special medical or food needs. Have an Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A & B) sheet completed for every overnight camper. Bring a copy of this form to camp that we will keep on file after you leave. Medications brought to camp by campers participating in the STEM Weekend must be in their original container. Sessions are typically not cancelled for bad weather. Leaders must decide if conditions are too hazardous for travel and must contact the Maple Syrup Days Registration Coordinator if you will not be coming. Otherwise refunds will not be available.

All overnight campers must submit a copy of their Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A & B). Copies turned in to Camp must be kept on file for 3 yrs. after they leave Camp. Day program participants must bring the Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A & B), but do not need to leave a copy with the Registration Coordinator. The Annual Health and Medical Record form can be found on the Bay-Lakes Council Website: HEALTH & MEDICATION CARD The Bear Paw Trading Post is open throughout the weekend selling Maple Syrup and related items such as Maple Taffy and other memorabilia. Credit Cards are accepted. 2 winter hats (one spare), the facemask type is recommended 2-3 pairs of mittens (warmer than gloves) 2-3 wool or fleece sweaters/sweatshirts Winter jacket, preferably parka style or hooded 1-2 pairs of polypropylene long underwear 2 pairs of pants, one of which is wool or insulated snow pants, no jeans 2-3 pairs of heavy insulated socks, wool or synthetic 2-3 pairs of light synthetic liner socks 1-2 pairs of warm winter boots Sleeping bag. Thermal or extra blankets if sleeping outside Pillow Toothbrush, soap, chap stick, towel, and other toiletries Flashlight Water bottle Cabins with Bunks Meals Staff Friday Night STEM Programming Saturday Maple Syrup Days Programming Saturday Evening Programming Saturday Night Ice Cream Social & Movie 2 winter hats (one spare), the facemask type is recommended 2-3 pairs of mittens (warmer than gloves) Winter jacket, preferably parka style or hooded 1-2 pairs of polypropylene long underwear 2-3 pairs of heavy insulated socks, wool or synthetic The Maple Syrup Days Program is not a Show & Tell program, but rather is a Show and DO. DO stress to all campers that cotton clothing is not appropriate for outdoor winter activities. Cotton holds moisture and your body cools quicker with wet cotton than with nothing at all. Encourage all Scouts and Leaders to dress in layers. Too much physical activity can cause perspiration which creates more moisture buildup in clothing than exterior snow. Don t over exercise. Ventilate and loosen clothing as needed. Change wet layers before they soak others AND Tennis Shoes are not winter boots. You will be outside 80% of your weekend. There will be several opportunities during the day to be inside and warm up.

Cooking You will learn how to use Maple Syrup in everyday cooking and baking, along with some favorite recipes and taste testing of what you make. 7. Sugar Bush Management Here we explore forestry and tree management. We will be doing a little tree identification, scavenger hunt and topics directly related to the management of our forest here at Camp. 8. Tapping Learn all about the history of how to tap a maple tree, the history of the tools used and use some of those tools to tap. 9. Collection Get ready to do some work. You will get a chance to Empty Buckets and participate in the actual collection of sap that will be later boiled into syrup. 10. Scouts have fun through STEM principles. Friday night s activity is the construction and use of spoon catapults. Saturday night s activity is the construction and use of a marshmallow shooter.

Maple Syrup Days Refund Request Form Maple Syrup Days Camp fees are typically non-refundable as we encourage Units to transfer fees to another Scout in the unit who is attending camp. However, the Council will deal with each situation in which a written refund request is received and endeavor to be as fair as possible. 1. Sickness, injury or family tragedy before camp resulting in the Scout not attending Notification before camp weekend - 50% refunded or 100% transferable to another winter weekend or summer camp in the same year Notification at check-in or later - No refund. 2. All other reasons (baseball tournament, change in vacation plans, etc): Notification at least 10 days before your camp date - 50% transferable to another winter weekend or summer camp in the same year. Less than 10 days, no refund Scout s name: Unit # Camp Dates: Amount Paid: Leader s Telephone: If refund is granted we prefer (Check one): Transfer to Another Weekend Transfer to Summer Camp Check Refund Reason for refund: Please be advised: Due to credit card processing fees and administrative costs, any approved event refund request will incur a 10% processing charge. I understand this refund request will be reviewed and if approved credit will be applied to the unit s winter camp bill. If a credit balance remains after the unit has been at camp, a check will be mailed to the unit or the amount credited to their Scoutshop account. Leader s Signature Date: Mail completed form to: Bay-Lakes Council, PO Box 267, Appleton WI

Maple Syrup Days Special Diet Request Form The staff at our Maple Syrup Days Weekend want to provide the best experience it can for every camper. Facilities and budgets limit the possibilities but a sincere effort will be made to accommodate campers in your Unit with special dietary needs. We need to know who these campers are and what is needed. The more detailed information the family can provide, the better we will be able to help. After completing the request form, we also need the Unit and the camper to identify themselves to our kitchen staff and to cooperate in helping us meet the request. Problems encountered should be addressed at once to the camp leadership. Conditions at this Weekend Camp are such that we need time to prepare and to be sure we can meet the needs of our campers. Please let us know at least 3 weeks in advance what special needs exist in your Unit. If we do not receive the form on time, we cannot guarantee that your needs will be met. Special diets that are planned in advance include; Vegetarian, Kosher and diets based on allergies. UNIT # DATES AT CAMP: SCOUTS NAME: PARENTS NAME: DAYTIME PHONE # NIGHT TIME PHONE # List the special request being made and/or the allergies that must be addressed below: the information above to Jodi Hermsen, Maple Syrup Days Registration Coordinator at
