2 Grizzly Halloween Fall Adventure Dear Scouts and Scouters: Are you ready to take advantage of a great camping experience? It s happening again this fall at Camp Brown on October 25-26, This year, the Coronado Area Council, BSA will again provide a fall weekend program. All districts are invited. Activities will be Cub Scout den and Webelos patrol oriented to help reinforce team building skills and to have fun. Back by popular demand: the Costume Contests (Tiger Cub, Cub Scout and Webelos divisions and a leader division), a Haunted Hiking Trail, and Spook House. A list of activities is enclosed. Our goal is for you to have fun and friendship with Scouts and Scouters from around the council. If you have questions contact your district camping chair/representative. You may also contact your district executive or the Scout Service Center at or toll free Remember you have to be present to enjoy the fun and make the Grizzly Halloween a personal, memorable, experience. See you at Camp Brown and enjoy this great weekend of camping. The GREAT PUMPKIN will rise at camp!
3 Grizzly Halloween Fall Adventure Important Dates: September 30 Pre-Registration form and fee of $20 per Cub Scout Pack; and October 13 Unit Registration form due with participant fees. The fee increases to $15/person after October 13. Dates/Check-in : October 25-26, Units may check-in from Saturday from 9:00 am 9:45 am. Sunday s only scheduled activity is breakfast & Scouts Own religious service. Participation: This event is open to Webelos Scouts, Cub Scouts and Tiger Cubs event. Fifth-grade Webelos are encouraged to attend Webelos Woods, a hands on program on Saturday morning to introduce them to entry-level Boy Scout skills they will be using in a few months. Family camping is available, check fees on registration page. We do not have programs for youth younger than Tiger Cub age. Adult Leadership: Cub Scout Packs ratio of one leader to five youth. Tiger Cubs are invited, but must have a parent Camping with them. Two-deep leadership is required. If camping as a Pack, the pack needs a BALOO trained leader camping. Note that some Packs Baloo trained leader may be a Webelos Leader. Scout Uniform: The Scout uniform is encouraged for flag ceremonies and dinner. Saturday Night we suggest the Scouts wear their Halloween Costumes (Pre Screened by their Leaders) for the contests at the Campfire program. Pre-Registration: Each Pack should pre-register their attendance by submitting the Registration Form with a $20.00 pre-registration fee by September 30th. This $20.00 will be credited toward your attendance fee but is non-refundable if your pack fails to attend. Campsites will be awarded in the order of registrations. Additional information is available at Remaining fees: By October 13th to the Coronado Council Service Center, P.O. Box 912, Salina, KS Unit rosters turned in at camp. Bring health forms for all participants youth and adults. Bring Climbing Consent Hold Harmless Agreement for all Webelos Scouts and adults that want to participate on the Climbing Tower. Event Fees: The event fee goes to defray the cost of patches, ribbons, awards, liability insurance, Cracker Barrel, camp maintenance and program support materials. Accident insurance is provided for BSA registered youth and adults. The event fee is $12 per person if paid by October 13; otherwise it is $15/person. An event patch will be presented to each registered participant. The fee is not pro-rated and is not refundable. Camp-wide Cracker Barrel: Will be held Saturday evening in the dining hall for all Scouts and leaders.
4 Grizzly Halloween Activities Cub Scout 1. Monkey Bridge crossing; 2. Leave No Trace sessions, teaching the patch requirements; 3. Tennis ball cooperation game; 4. Games hook tag, vertigo, water balloon launch, etc. 5. Local fire department truck for display; 6. BB-gun range; 7. Action archery range; 8. Wrist Rockets; 9. Pumpkin carving contest. Two pumpkins per Pack 10. Pumpkin Painting (limited pumpkins available) 11. Webelos Only - Climbing tower 12. Spider Web game Webelos Woods Open to Webelos to introduce them to basic Boy Scout skills they will use in a few months. The purpose is to get these Scouts excited about continuing in a Boy Scout troop. Activities are from 10:15 am Noon, but may not use all the time allotted. Pocket knife instruction (bring one if have, otherwise pocket knives are provided); Fire starting with matches and fire by friction; Knots/lashings and using them to build a tripod and flag pole; Cooking easy cooking for a snack and try your hand at cooking a pancake. Sleeping in cold weather, like maybe tonight; Backpacking what to take on an overnight trip and how to pack Webelos Woods activities will end at noon. Webelos can then rejoin other Cub Scouts in their pack or attend other Cub Scout activities.
5 Grizzly Halloween Fall Adventure Vehicle Information: Parking in designated areas (parking lot and along road south of storm shelter). Gear will be hauled to your campsite on trailers. Parking attendants and security will be available on Saturday morning to direct movement and parking of vehicles. Visitors: Visitors and parents are welcome to visit the camp throughout the weekend. However, they are not allowed to participate in any events. Flags: Packs are encouraged to fly (post) their unit flag at each campsite. Event Rules: The event rules are for every one. The Scout Code of Conduct is found in the Scout Oath or Promise, the Law of the Pack and Outdoor Code. Any questions inquire with the Event Staff. Leaving the Event: Unit leaders are responsible for Scouts leaving early, for knowing that the Scout s parent(s) has given permission for their son to leave camp and with whom the Scout has permission to leave with. Trading Post: The trading post will be open for Scouts and Scouters to purchase items, pop and snacks. Hours of operation will be posted. Religious Services: A Scout is Reverent. All Scouts and Leaders are asked to participate in the 9:00 am Sunday morning Scout s Own service. Catholic Services are available at St. Andrew s in Abilene at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. No Ground Fires are allowed. Bring gas cook stoves or above ground fire barrels and firewood (unless burn ban is in effect). Camp has a few fire barrels. First Aid: Health Officer will be in the Health Lodge or about camp. Climbing/Rappelling Tower: Available only for Webelos Scouts. All Webelos and leaders climbing must bring with them and turn in the BSA Challenge Course and Climbing/Rappelling Health History and Consent Form for Adult or Child. Turn this in at the Climbing Tower to the Climbing Instructor. It will not be returned.
6 Grizzly Halloween - Fall Adventure Camp Rules General Regulations: No open flames in tents: includes candles, cigarettes, warming devices using fuel Report any injuries to the health officer Liquid fuels and propane stored in controlled areas by leaders Propane or liquid fuel stoves are recommended. Above ground fire barrels can be used. No digging, trenching or cutting of trees or brush Garbage is to be taken to the dumpster by Dining Hall No pets, not even with visitors Foot travel only, no ATVs or golf carts. If someone has a disability, please contact the Scout Service Center before the activity. Campsites Units will be assigned camping areas based on registration. Food & Equipment Each unit is responsible to provide their own food for Saturday s Lunch and camping equipment. Visitors are welcome but must check-in at the dining hall. OPEN FIRES Fires are allowed only in above ground unit fire barrels. If a burning ban exists at the time, fires will not be allowed. Units must supply their own fire wood as wood is not available on site. Fire Guard Each unit is to use a Fire Guard Plan supplied at check-in. Cub Scout leaders/parents need to stay with their youth. Buddy System is always used. The river/creek is off limits. Leaders always know the whereabouts of their youth. In case of severe weather, a continuous car horn will alert you to come to the storm shelter.

8 CHALLENGE COURSE and CLIMBING/RAPPELLING HEALTH HISTORY AND CONSENT FORM ADULT OR CHILD This form must be turned in at camp to the Climbing Instructor in order to participate. BRING THIS WITH YOU! You are about to take part in a challenge ( ropes ) course experience and / or climbing/rappelling ( activity ) offered through the Coronado Area Council BSA on (date). While participating in the activity you will undertake a wide variety of physical and mental challenges that are comparable to activities with which you may be more familiar. Much of the time, you will be engaged in activity of moderate exertion, which is comparable to normal walking, golfing on foot, raking leaves, calisthenics, or slow dancing. For short periods of time, you will be engaged in activity of vigorous exertion, which is comparable to fast walking, slow jogging, heavy gardening, or shoveling snow. If any of the above activities are difficult for you, discuss your participation in the activity with your physician. If these are activities in which you regularly engage without difficulty, you should be fit for participation in the program. Following are specific medical conditions about which participants should always seek the advice of a physician before participating in the activity: Pregnancy (climbing harness can injure uterus) Kidney or liver transplant (climbing harness can injure transplanted organ) Healing fracture or joint injury (should be cleared by treating physician) Recent surgery (should be cleared by treating physician) Down syndrome (should have x-ray check for neck instability, as per recommendation of the Special Olympics) If you or your physician has any questions about the physical requirements of the activity, feel free to contact the local council. In consideration of the benefits to be derived, after carefully considering the risk involved, and in view of the fact that the Boy Scouts of America is an organization in which membership is voluntary, I have carefully considered the risk involved and have given consent for myself (or my son or daughter) to participate in the activity, and waive all claims I or we may have against the Boy Scouts of America, the local council, the activity coordinators, and all employees, volunteers, related parties, or other organizations associated with the activity. I am not under the influence of any chemical substance, including alcohol. Understanding that any physical activity involves a risk of injury, I understand that my participation in the activity is entirely voluntary. I release the Boy Scouts of America, the local council, the activity coordinators, and all employees, volunteers, related parties, or other organizations associated with the activity from any and all claims or liability arising out of this participation. This release does not, however, apply to any harm caused by negligence or willful misconduct of the local council or its employees. In case of emergency involving my child, I understand every effort will be made to contact me.
