12 Application tips and techniques The wrapping environment should be heated with a power supply and good lighting. Application should be done in a meticulously clean, dry and dust free environment to avoid attracting dust from the static when the liner is removed. The ideal application temperature for wrapping is 18 to 21 C, which includes the vehicle, vinyl and ambient temperature. The film and vehicle should be stored overnight at this temperature to acclimatise before application. 3M Surface Preparation Cleaner is recommended for cleaning the vehicle to ensure all traces of dirt and contamination are removed from the surface prior to application. Overstretching a film will cause it to lift and fail in time. Remember to heat and stretch film over a large area to reduce percentage stretch and use the correct film for the application to ensure its conformability. Post heating is critical to set the film and adhesive in place after application. All areas that are stretched into a concave area must be post heated. Use a digital infrared thermometer to ensure the correct post heating temperature is achieved. Ensure you move the heat gun away from the vinyl before reading the temperature to ensure a correct reading (Recommended infrared digital thermometer). Cutting and trimming should be carried out with a clean, sharp blade. Ensure you replace scalpel blades frequently. Use the flat edge of the scalpel against the bodywork not directly onto the paintwork. Always cut to the opposite edge from the one you need to cover (Recommended Swann Morton No2 craft handles and No2 blades). For recess applications, use a small application roller to ensure good adhesion in the valley of the recesses (Recommended 3M small channel application roller). 15 What our customers say I mainly use 3M 1080 Series for full vehicle colour change wraps. For wrapping smaller interior trim elements, the carbon materials seem to be perfect for the job. I ve tried many different materials and I always come back to 3M 1080; the Controltac adhesive and the Comply version 3 are amazing features of the vinyl that, for me as a one-man business, make even the toughest parts of the car, such as the roof and bumper, a lot easier to fit. I ve used several colours and in particular the Gloss White has been well received with customers saying how amazing the shine looks. We first used it a few months ago and when our customer called in to see us recently the vehicle still looked as though it just left our unit. Both we and, most importantly, our customer are very happy with it. We recently completed full colour change wraps on three VW Jettas in isee2 Total Wrap Mandarin Orange. We needed a self-coloured wrap film and this was the closest to the client s colour reference. The price was also favourable, so it ticked all the boxes for us. We have found it to be the best material for the purpose. It s the most conformable, gives excellent fitting, and its adhesion is less aggressive than other materials, enabling us to achieve the correct finish when complete.
