6 HARDSHELL At Boblbee we set out to find the best performing material for each desired function. That s why we use engineering plastics which are impact modified, to create protective barriers, simply because it s the best way to confront nature s laws of kinetic energy. The shell for a Boblbee back pack/back protector, is made in Sweden and created from liquid plastic which is compressed at 500 tones of pressure, resulting in a dense molecular structure, to ensure even protective characteristics and strength throughout the part. It s called high pressure injection molding (not to compare with vacuum formed parts which is a low pressure manufacturing method). We use several types of plastics, depending on design and application, and always impact modified grades, which are best in their class. The world s first hard shell back pack was created for a single clear purpose: protection, for body and equipment, and a life in motion. The multiply awarded innovation and global patent laid the foundation for the Boblbee company, with the hard shell family comprising the iconic top performers in terms of protection, multi-tasking and refinement.

HYBRID SHELL Great protection, shock absorbing flexibility, highly water resistant and very light, - a desired combination of features for anyone on the move, all achieved with a material which

38 HYBRID SHELL Great protection, shock absorbing flexibility, highly water resistant and very light, - a desired combination of features for anyone on the move, all achieved with a material which basically is a type of foam. Each shell starts out from a thick block of high-density foam, which is being compressed to our desired shape and thickness. Depending on the initial thickness of the block, often ranging from 5 to 10 centimeters, we can control the final hardness, flex and protective qualities of the shell. The final shaping takes place in a hand worked aluminum tool, where the material is heated, compressed, and sometimes laminated with an additional surface material, such as rip stop mesh. The final assembly of a hybrid shell product is an innovation in itself, as the parts are glued and stitched, much like the way a trekking shoe is assembled. The finished body now provides a very high degree of water protection, sturdiness, and at a minimum of weight since the foam to a large degree is trapped air.

Tarp is a strong, flexible and water proof canvas, which has been used since the days of the tall ships to cover goods on deck. Although tarp grades today have little resemblance with what was used in the past, the concept is the same; laminate a fabric material with a water protective coating to achieve a combination of strength and protective seal. Our Tarp shell collection use a synthetic rubber compound over tightly bundled polyester threads which has gone through rigorous mechanical trials as well as field testing for several years with national ski teams, scientists and not to mention the-three-kids-all-gear-tourist-family. Our Tarp Shell products are always designed for the end of the road, which means that a trunk must handle snow and sand ground as well as an airport marble floor, and it must pack dirty motorcycle boots as well as your evening dress.

SOFT SHELL Soft shell is an expression some times used to describe a textile barrier which provides some sort of protection against the surrounding environment.

76 SOFT SHELL Soft shell is an expression some times used to describe a textile barrier which provides some sort of protection against the surrounding environment. For us it s more than expression, as we put pride into providing protection, and being true to the meaning of shell. For example; all our structural fabrics have three layers of water protective coating on the inside, which is well above standard. It s not a visible fact, but you d notice if it wasn t there. Padding is always on the upper side of the quality spectra, and with no spare on the thickness or density. Your chain is never stronger than its weakest link, and for any sewn item it will come down to the quality of the thread and the tension of the stitching. That s why all our bagsand equipment are sewn with top grade nylon thread for load bearing and no compromise polyester thread for trim details. That s a simple secret to why we make things that work.

Although the land here is flat, in winter time, the head wind can be tormenting, and the beaches void of people. In summer the air is soft and filled with an ever present breeze, and faces smiling good morning, as we pass each other, content, as this day got of to a good start. I enjoy the early hours of a city getting started, and the frantic buzz of airports. I enjoy fractional meetings and eyes that meet in the street. I enjoy massive snow fall, thunder storms and heavy rain. I enjoy the calm on a mountain summit and the sound of silence in a desert night. I enjoy the cold water of the Baltic sea and the warm currents of the Caribbean. I enjoy people who say what they think. I like to experience. Jonas Blanking, Creative Guardian-BOBLBEE Photo Jonas Ingerstedt Boblbee was founded in 1997 based on Jonas Blanking s innovations for protecting gear and the user. Jonas Blanking is an alumni of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and initially worked with automotive design at the IDEA Institute in Turin, Italy. Through his positions as designer at Barre Associés (France) and Kontrapunkt (Denmark), his portfolio includes projects for identity and product design for numerous international brands. Jonas Blanking established his own studio in 1995 with the Carrera Group, Safilo and Volvo as part of a distinguished client list. Together with the Morel-France Group he is also the creative founder of the ÖGA eyewear brand. Through Boblbee and independent projects his work has been internationally awarded, including Best Ambassador for his home town, through the reconnaissance of Boblbee internationally. At present, his enthusiasm and creativity is part of the team and development at Boblbee in Sweden.
