The girls worked hard to earn enough money for the trip, where they learned about fire safety, helped cook a few favorites including muffins in a cup, explored the tidal pool, and had a blast being together. Welcome 2018! As I look out my window at the snow covered ground and enjoy its sparkling beauty, I also long for the warm days of summer, our refreshing lakes, inviting ocean breezes, and walking outside without all the layers! This issue of Compass magazine provides so many great activities for Girl Scouts in all seasons. Most importantly, we highlight our fantastic camp programs for girls to enjoy the outdoors with friends, and create memories that can last a lifetime. You might notice in my picture above that I am next to a cherished print that hangs in my office. It is a copy of a Grandma Moses painting of children at camp. Frog This whimsical painting illustrates the wonders of camp, more than an actual picture. Check out the giant frog for example! I love it because it represents camp as a place full of fun, outdoor experiences, community, and skill-building. Can you see that too? As the snow flies, I hope you too will dream about your summer days at one of our four Girl Scout camps where fun, the outdoors and skills will greet you. You might even find a giant frog! 5 Older Girl Winter Camp-In Submitted by Danielle Irish, Cadette, Gorham Each February, Nonesuch Service Unit holds an Older Girl Scout Winter Camp-In at Camp Pondicherry for girls in grade 6 and up. We always work on the badges together, meeting up before the camp-in to decide which badges we want to work on, and plan a service project. At Winter Camp-In, we always get to do fun activities inside and outside in the snow. Pondicherry as a great hill for sliding, but warning - the climb back up the hill is exhausting! This year, we played different games with a giant parachute. We also had free time to do whatever we wanted, making new friends and meeting up with old ones. Each of us were assigned a meal, and we completely prepared, served and cleaned up meals for one another. The Older Girl Winter Camp-In is always a lot of fun, especially being able to interact with girls that we may not know, who could be younger or older than us. Last year, older high school seniors came and told us all about Girl Scout Destinations trips they took, and showed us a photo slide show and showed us their scrapbooks. We always have an amazing weekend, especially in being able to spend time with one another and make new friends. Need a fantastic location for a family or troop camp adventure, but not sure where to go? GSME has the answer! You can rent our awesome camps Pondicherry, Kirkwold and Scelkit including the beautiful properties, equipment, and facilities. You don't just have to stay at camp either. You can use the proprieties as a home base for all of your adventures. Learn more at girlscoutsofmaine.org/camprentals 5

Flowers for Paige Submitted by Kristina Lento, Paige s mom 6 Paige first discovered Natarswi in 2012, when she was just 7 years old. Our troop participated in our first Mini-Camp that year. Paige tried everything. In archery and boating, the bows and oars were twice her size; she climbed the rock with help from Daisy and Ranger, but lost her shoes on the way up. She enjoyed arts and crafts and loved songs around the campfire. Her favorite song was Cecil the Caterpillar. However, there was absolutely, positively no way she was going to get into the cold water for a regular swim, so forget polar dip! After that weekend, she talked about camp constantly and returned for Mini-Camp or resident camp every year. When she was 10, we went back for a Mom and Me weekend. I watched in awe as she climbed the rock on her own, hit the target in archery without help for the very first time and paddled in the canoe with me, instead of riding in the middle. Then, as the cherry on top of an amazing weekend, she participated in Polar Dip. It was excruciatingly difficult for her and took her nearly 20 minutes to get into the water, but it was a proud moment for both her and I. She had done the Polar Dip! In 2016, Paige s health had taken a turn for the worst and she needed to be on oxygen 24 hours a day. That did not stop her from participating in Mini-Camp with the rest of her troop. She threw a tank in her backpack and away she went. She didn t climb the rock, but she watched and cheered on her friends; she didn t paddle the canoe, but rode in it, and she certainly didn t participate in Polar Dip, but she sang her heart out around the campfire. She made a lot of friends and showed a lot of girls that you can accomplish anything if you put your heart into it. In December of 2016, Paige passed away quietly in her sleep. At her funeral, Girl Scouts from local troops sang Cecil the Caterpillar for her. There were multiple offers to plant a tree in her honor at Natarswi, and a campership fund was set up in her name, but my favorite way that she was honored was flowers. This past spring, in the hours before the open house at Natarswi, Girl Scouts met and worked on planting flowers around Natarswi s main camp in honor of Paige. The flowers grew and bloomed and were beautiful all summer. I want to thank everyone who helped to make the planter boxes beautiful. They were a perfect way to remember her. This story, submitted by Paige s mom Kristina Lento, is a wonderful tribute to Paige s memory, as are the flowers planted at Natarswi in her memory. Paige didn t let anything stand in her way, a true go-getter and Girl Scout. She will always have a special place in our hearts.

One thing I enjoyed the most about Pondicherry was that we could choose whether we wanted to do archery in the afternoon or arts and crafts instead. All in all, one of the best camps we've visited so far. The tents were great. The activities were great. All the staff members were great too. I can't wait to come back next year! - Olivia S mores and More: Making new friends at Pondi The Cadettes from Troop 1011 from Dayton and Troop 796 from Lamoine decided that they wanted to try troop camping at S mores and More at Camp Pondicherry last summer. Being short the adult requirement for troop camping, and since everything is more fun with other girls, the leaders of troops 1011 and 796 decided to share a campsite so that both troops could attend. Despite the rain and some thunder, the girls had a great time! They loved the opportunity to practice archery on the range and canoe in the pond. They sang Girls Scout songs, shared a fun skit in the chalet and swam in the pond. They even got to try the challenge course and go on a nature hike. Working together, the troop leaders of troops 1011 and 796 gave each of their troops an awesome opportunity to check out the outdoors and try fun things, all while making new friends and memories that will last a lifetime. The campfire, songs and skits were a big hit. I hope I can go again next year. -Paige The staff was friendly and there were lots of activities to do. Archery was really fun and so was kayaking and swimming. - Violet 7

Where Girls Sleep One of the best parts about camp is the chance for you to connect with the natural world around you. Cabins If you are a younger girl, you can choose to sleep in bunk beds in a cozy cabin. At Pondicherry, this is the only sleeping facility where your counselors sleep in the same room with campers. At Natarswi, counselors either sleep in the cabin or in a tent nearby. Look for the cabin icon! Platform Tents- You ll get to enjoy the great outdoors in these tents! Pondicherry has permanent tent shelters with roofs and built-in bunk beds. At Natarswi, you ll stay in canvas tents with metal cots with three other girls. At each camp, tents are arranged in clusters (units) with your counselor s tent centrally located within the unit. Bug nets are provided for each individual bunk bed. Look for the tent icon! Each unit has a wash station, a campfire ring and a latrine or flush toilets nearby. Some units have an outdoor pavilion, which is used for unit activities. Central shower houses are available for you to use. Don t worry - indoor shelter is available at both camps for when the weather gets too severe! Camp Staff Rocks Our counselors are enthusiastic, caring young adults who come from all over the world. All staff members are carefully screened, including background checks, and selected for their ability to add to the camp experience. Most of the camp staff are CPR and first-aid trained, and many hold advanced certifications as Red Cross Lifeguards, Water Safety Instructors, Archery Instructors, Challenge Course Facilitators, Wilderness First Aiders, Maine Trip Leaders and Leave No Trace practitioners. Staff members also complete a week of intensive on-site pre-camp training to ensure the best camp experience for you. Meals Most of your meals are served either buffet style or family style in our camp dining hall. We serve three well-balanced and nutritious meals daily. We also do campfire cookouts where you ll help plan and prepare the meal. There is always one main dish and a vegetarian option, along with side dishes. You ll have a snack in the afternoon and fruit is always available. Typical meals include chicken, casseroles, pizza, stir fry, tacos, pasta dishes, turkey dinners, grilled cheese and soup, and salad bar. We always have tons of options for all appetites. You will not be hungry at camp! If you have special dietary needs, let us know before you arrive and we ll be happy to work with you. Bring a friend! You may request ONE buddy to bunk with during your time at camp. To be bunk buddies, you and your friend must each request each other by name and be within the same grade level and registered for the same session. Why just one buddy? Our tents accommodate four girls and we want to ensure that everyone has the best camp experience. A group of three leaves one girl who may feel left out. You and your buddy may attend different activities, depending on your personal choices and your different skill levels. But what if I come alone? Many girls come to camp without a buddy, so don t worry! You ll join a group of girls your own age who are interested in similar activities. Camp is a great place to make new friends! Camp Grade vs. School Grade We group girls by camp grade which is the grade you will be entering as of September General Camp Info 9

Meet our Camp Directors Camp Natarswi Treasa Tree Wheeler Tree has been the director of Natarswi since She has worked for Girl Scouts of Maine for 15 years, including several years volunteering for her own daughters troops and service unit. Girl Scouts is a big part of her family; her three daughters all have a deep appreciation of the outdoors and wonderful memories as Girl Scouts and Natarswi campers. She says Natarswi is a place that becomes a part of you; the memories will be with you for a lifetime. She says, Being part of the Natarswi family is amazing to be able to see how camp impacts the lives of the girls and staff to know they will leave camp stronger, more confident and have a love and appreciation for the outdoors. When not at Natarswi, Tree enjoys spending time with family, friends, and traveling to Texas. She also loves home improvement projects and spending as much time as she can at the barn continuing to improve as a rider. Camp Pondicherry Mary Meebz Boyle mboyle@gsmaine.org Meebz has worked at residential summer camps for 9 years and is excited to return for another wonderful summer at Pondi! Mary is a true believer in the power of camp and the outdoors in helping girls grow in courage, confidence and character. Her personal goal for this summer is to create exciting and engaging programming for both new and returning campers. Pondicherry is a place where girls are encouraged and supported to be themselves. Being the director has been a dream come true for Mary. In her spare time, Mary likes to spend as much time outside as possible hiking and backpacking the Northeast, playing with her dog Tenny, and enjoying a good book with a cup of tea. Camp Scelkit Penny Rev White outdoorprograms@gsmaine.org Penny is returning as the Camp Scelkit director for her fourth summer. She is a long-time volunteer for Girl Scouts of Maine, and has held various roles at our camps over many summers. She loves sharing the Girl Scout mission of building girls with courage, confidence and character with our campers, as she did with her own daughters. Penny is a Registered Maine Guide and is a professional in the outdoor education field. 10 To contact any of our camp directors, give us a call at

There are so many ways to camp at GSME. Make sure to check all your options and choose which type of session is right for you! Classic: Our traditional resident camp experience! Campers have the option to choose from many exciting activities including swimming, outdoor living skills, paddling on the lake, creative arts, and archery, to name a few. They will have plenty of time to work on Trail Master levels while getting the choice to try new things. Specialty: Girls focus on particular skills, and out-of-camp trips or experiences, while still having time to choose classic camp activities! Are you interested in horses? Camp Pondicherry s specialty horse programs would be perfect! What about sailing or rock climbing? Camp Natarswi offers awesome specialty adventure programs. Check out our other specialty offerings like cooking, art, photography, archery, hiking, canoe trips, wilderness survival and more! Leadership: Older girls practice working directly with campers and staff as they learn what it takes to lead like a G.I.R.L. Experiences in problem solving, group facilitation, and communication help them develop their leadership skills, while being immersed in the camp experience. Available only for girls in grades Troop, Group and Family: Experience Classic Camp together, as a troop or family group. Check out our Me and My Mom and Me and My Dad weekends and troop Mini-Camp offerings. Calling all Trail Masters! When you attend camp at either of our resident camps, you have a unique opportunity to participate in the GSME Trail Master program, a progressive program of skill development in which you achieve the Trail Master patch. The Trail Master program, an exclusive program to GSME, focuses on outdoor skills development. The four Trail Master levels are broken down so you can improve your skills while working through the levels. You earn a patch for each level you complete! Build your skills in: archery, boating, hiking, rock climbing, outdoor living, sailing, swimming, and nature. As a beginning camper, you ll start by sampling everything. As you return to camp, you ll build more skills in your favorite areas to achieve all four Trail Master levels! Trail Master is a specific program that requires careful planning of your time at camp. In Trail Master, you will choose to concentrate on three specific areas to master. Because GSME camps embrace the girl-led approach, you may select Free Choice activities that are not on the Trail Master program. It is possible that you may not achieve all Trail Master levels during your camp stay. Trail Master Patch CAMP SPIRIT WEEK! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be back in medieval times with dragons or to spend a week on a desert island? In week three, imagination runs wild in a good way! Come show us your Camp Spirit and join for a week of fun and choice. Our counselors will create a week of fun - and a little wacky - themes, with awesome activities for the whole morning. Each afternoon, you ll have activity blocks where you can choose from more traditional camp activities. You can decide on which activity you want to do for the whole week, or you can change your activity every day. You can even work on Trail Master levels too! It s all about your choice! For Pondi week 3 details, see page 15. For Natarswi week 3 details, see page

Pondicherry Resident Camp Programs 2018 Week 1 July 1-6 Week 2 July 8-13 Week 3 July Week 4 July Week 5 July 29 - August 3 My Awesome Time at Pondi Submitted by Myia Cottle, Cadette, Lewiston Are you working on earning your free session of camp? Cookie season starts in January - good luck! Learn more at girlscoutsofmaine.org/freecamp This was the second summer that Myia attended camp at Pondicherry. She went for three weeks. Her first program was Pony Express, for which she earned the session of camp. Congratulations Myia! How did I get to camp for free? Two words - PRODUCT. SALES. It s not always easy to sell enough, but I worked really hard, went to my Mom s work several times and around my neighborhood. I also reached out to my family (and I might have even bought a few myself with my allowance). That s how I earned a session of camp. For the first week, I went to horse camp with my friend Ariel. We got to learn how to ride a horse, brush them, and saddle them. That was my first week this past year and it was amazing-some! (amazing+awesome) During my second week, I did Trail Guides, which was basically anything I wanted to do. I did cooking and baking, swimming, theater, and sports. We played zip zap, which is a very fun game. We did arts and crafts in the craft shack. I even did archery and I actually hit the target! My third week was Pedals and Paddles. I learned how to kayak with counselors Taffy and Nemo, and then to bike ride with Shortsleeves, and Groovy. (Aren t camp names fun?) The first week, I participated in the Take Aim program, and the second, Appie Hikers. Take Aim was all about archery! We made our own arrows with help from Misox (one of the camp counselors), created mini bulls-eyes out of clay, and shot balloons with arrows. My favorite thing about Take Aim was getting a bulls-eye! 22 The Appie Hikers program was the best hiking experience I ve had in a very long time. We hiked to Katahdin Lake, to Little & Big Niagara, and learned about how to properly pack a day-pack for a hike. My favorite part was when we saw a moose while we were hiking to Katahdin Lake! I had a really fun time at camp, and I m working on earning a free week at camp for next year. I look forward to Camp Natarswi every summer, and I would highly recommend spending a week or two there having fun!
