Magness Adventure Camp 2017 Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch
Are you ready to help save the world? This summer at Magness Adventure Camp will be one for the ages! Scouts will embark on timeless adventures to learn various Scouting skills to help them defeat the Scorpio Faction trying to rid the earth of civilization, all the while gaining new experiences and making lasting memories. My name is Michael Adams, I am the Magness Adventure Camp Director, along with my staff, we are very excited for your arrival, and we cannot wait to help ignite the light of Scouting. We firmly believe that a positive experience at camp will ensure a lasting Scouting career and lifelong involvement in the program. Parents will be able to see the positive benefits through our combinations of fun and games along with well-rounded lessons making it a great weekend for both Scout and parents alike! Thank you for attending this summer and we will see you soon! Michael Adams Camp Director Magness Adventure Camp Michael.Adams@scouting.org
Welcome to Magness Adventure Camp D.O.O.M.s Day 2017 Good day, survivors of the apocalypse!! My name is Mike Swanson, otherwise known as Mad Mike. Upon arrival at Magness Adventure Camp, one of the last remaining safe havens on Earth, you will set on an expedition to save the world and bring peace to our conflicted community! You will belong to one of 3 Factions: Atlas, Gaia, or Scorpio. The three factions work together to maintain the welfare of our community. Because much of the world has been ravaged by the destruction of D.O.O.M devices, also known as Diabolical Oxygen Obliteration Machines. It is up to you, as survivors of the Apocalypse to Save Magness from destruction. You will learn a large variety of skills during your stay that you can retain over your lifetime. Throughout the course of your stay, you will complete activities in Shooting Sports, Aquatics, Wilderness Survival, and many more rank required adventures on your path through Cub Scouts. Many of these skills will aid to the construction of a strong moral character, in route to the aims and goals that Scouting supports. Remember, as survivors of the Apocalypse, the burden rests on you to save our camp from the Destruction of the D.O.O.M. device! See you all at camp! -Mad mike

MISSION STATEMENTS These statements are the core of Scouting, and staff members often remind Cub Scouts of them to help guide their actions. We believe all campers and staff at Magness should strive to live by these values. Boy Scouts of America Mission Statement The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch Mission Statement The mission of the Denver Area Council summer camping program is to provide each Scout with a memorable and challenging outdoor experience. Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch enriches the fundamentals of Scouting through unique opportunities for leadership and educational growth. Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch, and the Denver Area Council, BSA, is an equal opportunity facility that does not discriminate on the basis of sex, color, race, creed or religion. Cub Scouting Purposes The Cub Scouting program has 10 purposes related to the overall mission of the Boy Scouts of America to build character, learn citizenship, and develop personal fitness: 1. Character Development 2. Spiritual Growth 3. Good Citizenship 4. Sportsmanship & Fitness 5. Family Understanding 6. Respectful Relationships 7. Personal Achievement 8. Friendly Service 9. Fun and Adventure 10. Preparation for Boy Scouts Scout Law A Scout is: Trustworthy Loyal Helpful Friendly Courteous Kind Obedient Cheerful Thrifty Brave Clean Reverent Remember the Cub Scout Motto: Do your best! Scout Oath On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
WELCOME TO PEACEFUL VALLEY SCOUT RANCH! Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch is located in central Colorado, 65 miles southeast of Denver, a few miles south of the town of Elbert. The Ranch consists of 3,316 acres of mountain park terrain, 7,000 feet in elevation, along the Palmer Divide in the Black Forest. Peaceful Valley also functions as a working ranch throughout the year, with over 1,000 acres devoted to farming and grazing. There are three different Scout camps located on Peaceful Valley. A more detailed history of Peaceful Valley, and a description of all three camps, can be found in the general Peaceful Valley Guide for Leaders and Campers, which can be found the Denver Area Council s website under the camping tab. Magness Adventure Camp Facilities Magness has two separate shelters, Lizard Head and Lost Creek. Each shelter is wheel-chair accessible and offers running water, flush toilets and hot showers, as well as a large, centrally located dining area, where meals prepared in the Coors Commissary will be served. There are 60 tents on permanent cement platforms surrounding each shelter and each tent has two cots with foam pads. An additional pad can be supplied for a third person or child under 5, if requested. Campers may also pitch their own tents around the shelters, though space can be limited. The Main Office and a well-stocked Medical Lodge are at the Headquarters building, directly next to our local Trading Post where many exciting toys, tools, costumes, and clothing items - as well as cold drinks, candy and ice cream - can be purchased. At the center of the Magness Shelters is Lake Kiewit, where camp participants can use canoes, paddleboats and rowboats, as well as swim, fish, and observe many wild animals. On the northern side of Magness are BB Gun Ranges, a Tomahawk Range, an Archery Range, and a Slingshot Range for guests to test their marksmanship! On the way to the ranges is the famous Magness Watch Tower, which is a fond memory for the thousands of Cub Scouts who have climbed it. All of these facilities are bordered on the North Eastern side by the First and Second Mesa, where all guests will can spend their time simply observing nature. Magness Program Cub Scouts and their families can expect a theme and activity-filled four days. After check-in and move-in, your first day kicks off with a camp-wide flag ceremony, ice cream social, and the opening campfire! Days 2 and 3 are spent with the Cub Scouts in Dens which are organized by rank, and provided a schedule of exciting activities all across the camp. And new this year will be the stationing of Magness staff at individual locations, who have been specifically trained to teach the Scouts using specialized knowledge and extended class time. Each Den will go through rank
specific activities, ensuring all campers will be suitably challenged and engaged throughout their time at Magness. In the middle of Day 3 there will also be a camp-wide festival around the lake where the Cubbies will test their recently learned skills on a dozen different games and challenges, all to be capped off with the grand finale of a closing show. Further details of the rotations, color groups, and exact times will be found in a parents guide handed out at check-in. Please note: all Scouts must be accompanied by an adult. CHECKING IN AT MAGNESS ADVENTURE CAMP! Check-In will take place from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM. It will be helpful to you and us if the entire pack checks in together. Please do not arrive before 1:30 P.M., as check in will not begin until 1:30 and you will not be able to drive beyond the bathrooms at Headquarters. If you are delayed or must arrive after 4:00 P.M., you will need to complete checkin at the Main Office. When you arrive at Magness, you will be checked in by the staff in the parking lot near Headquarters and directed to your assigned shelter. Be Prepared by knowing your pack number! Please have your Medical Forms and Registration/Payment information available! FYI: At the peak of Check-In, there may be a minute wait, though we work hard to reduce this. While at check-in you will receive a Shelter Assignment, Participant Packet and other pertinent information including a schedule and list of activities. We will also collect your medical forms and verify that there isn t a balance due on your account. Remember, every individual staying overnight is required to turn in a medical form. If you didn t bring a completed medical form, you will have to complete one before heading to your shelter or beginning activities. Any balances due must be paid at check-in. Please verify any special dietary or other needs when you check-in! Medications: Any person under 18 without a parent or legal guardian at camp must turn in medications (both prescriptions and over-the-counter medications) to the Medic with their medical form. The Medic will fill out a Medication Administration form for the participant, and administer the Medication from the Medical Lodge based on the medication schedule indicated.
Shelter Directors: Each shelter has a permanent Shelter Director. They will be able to answer any questions you may have, and assist you with anything you need to make your stay at Magness Adventure Camp a fantastic one. During your stay, your Shelter Director will pass along information, dictate the policies of camp, and assist in assigning your Scouts to a World Explorer Den. Parking and Vehicles: At your shelter, you will be directed into a parking space and receive further information from the Staff and your Shelter Director. While at Magness, your vehicle must remain parked unless you are leaving camp. It is expected that all transportation around camp be done on foot. If you need assisted transportation around camp, please let your Shelter Director know, and they will communicate with the Camp Director. CHECKING OUT At the end of your stay at Magness Adventure Camp, please be sure to check out at the Main Office in the Magness Headquarters Building. Upon Checking Out you will receive: A Camp Evaluation Survey 1. Please complete this survey and let us know how we did and what you liked most/least The Magness D.O.O.M patch Any medications you checked in with the Magness Medic Checkout is also the perfect time to check the Lost-And-Found for any items you may have misplaced while at Magness. If a valuable item such as a watch or wallet is discovered missing after you get home, call the Magness Adventure Camp Headquarters at to see if it has been turned in. All unclaimed items are donated to charity after September 1. Please note: Colorado State Law requires that, as a child care facility, we will keep a copy of your medical form for several years. The forms are kept in a secure manner and eventually shredded, but you will not be able to have your medical form returned to you.
