4 Here s How This spring the CAMP CARD FUNDRAISING PROGRAM will be introduced in the Northeast Georgia Council. The cards are easy to sell and have a great value. Cub Scouts can pay their way to camp while earning valuable prizes for themselves. Packs participating in the program can earn up to $4.00 on each Camp Card sold. Based on the Pack s plan this money can be applied to a Scout s account to attend camp. The goal is EVERY SCOUT IN CAMP. The Value of selling Camp Cards: Cub Scout Day Camp is only 15 cards or $60 Cub Scout Adventure Camp is only 20 cards or $80 GO TO CAMP FOR FREE! Camp Card Facsimile Your actual 2009 Camp Card will contain valuable localized coupons good for multi-use for one year. In the fall of each year, the Council organizes the Trail s End Popcorn Sale. During the months of October and November a Scout can help to earn his own way in Scouting by selling really great popcorn. 70% of the money for all popcorn that is sold stays right here in our community. 35% stays in the Pack and Troop s treasuries while another 35% goes to help improve our camps and to help kids who might not have a chance to be a Scout. Last year about $ , commission for popcorn sold was paid to Packs and Troops throughout the Northeast Georgia Council. That s a lot of corn! Do all of the things that you want to do for a full 12-month program including registration, Boys Life, uniforms, advancements, banquets, field trips, Day Camp, Fun With Son, Overnight Camp, etc. You can bet that it s going to take money to have all of that fun! When your Cub Scout Pack sets a budget and plans just how much money it will cost to have Scouting for the year a goal can be set and plans can be made to raise the funds. The NORTHEAST GEORGIA COUNCIL provides two Scouting fundraisers each year in which your Cub Scout Pack can participate, the CAMP CARD FUNDRAISING PROGRAM and the Trail s End Popcorn Sale. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be completed in one swim without stops and must include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating. Beginner Test Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place. The entry and turn serve the same purpose as in the swimmer test. The swimming can be done with any stroke, but no underwater swimming is permitted. The stop assures that the swimmer can regain a stroke if it is interrupted. The test demonstrates that the beginning swimmer is ready to learn deepwater skills and has the minimum ability required for safe swimming in a confined area in which shallow water, sides, or other support is less than 25 feet from any point in the water. Safety Afloat Safety Afloat has been developed to promote boating and boating safety and to set standards for safe unit activity afloat. Canoeing, rowboating, and rafting for Cub Scouts (including Webelos Scouts) is to be limited to council/district events on flat-water ponds or controlled lake areas free of powerboats and sailboats. Prior to recreational canoeing, Cub Scouts are to be instructed in basic handling skills and safety practices. For Cub Scouts: The ratio of adult supervisors to participants is one to five. Swimming Ability A person who has not been classified as a swimmer may ride as a passenger in a rowboat or motorboat with an adult swimmer or in a canoe, raft, or sailboat with an adult certified as a lifeguard or a lifesaver by a recognized agency. In all other circumstances, the person must be a swimmer to participate in an activity afloat. Swimmers must pass Swimmer Test. 22

25 Leader's Guide Scoutland Adventure Camp Webelos Camping with their Den/Patrol If the boys in your Den/Patrol will be in the 4th or 5th grade in the fall of 2009, they are able to attend Scoutland Adventure Camp as a group. You can choose from six opportunities to attend this four day/three night camp experience. Please review the Scoutland Adventure Camp Information on s 8-11 in the 2009 Cub Scout Guide to Summer Outdoor Activities and on the Council website If you plan on attending Scoutland Adventure Camp as a Den/Patrol, there are some important things you need to consider: Each Patrol must provide its own leadership while at Scoutland Adventure Camp. Volunteers do not have to be registered leaders with the Boy Scouts of America. A parent of a Webelos Scout is acceptable; however, each Patrol MUST be accompanied by at least two (2) adults. Leadership criteria is: # of Scouts in Patrol Leaders Required # of Scouts in Patrol Leaders Required 1 Scout 2-4 Scouts 1 Parent 2 Adults 5-8 Scouts 9-12 Scouts 3 Adults 4 Adults In order to provide the Scoutland Adventure Camp to as many Scouts as possible, there are no facilities or programs for siblings, regardless of age. If your Den/Patrol is Webelos II, you must choose whether you will participate in Advancement Adventure or in the popular Outback Adventure. Outback Adventure has limited space and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You can choose from six opportunities to attend this four day/three night camp experience with the first camp beginning on Sunday, July 5th, and continuing throughout the month of July. WHEN IS CAMP? Six Sessions of Camp will be offered this year! A session lasts 4 days and 3 nights. Sessions 1, 3, and 5 operate from 2 p.m. on Sunday until 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Sessions 2, 4, and 6 operate from 2 p.m. on Wednesday until 9 a.m. on Saturday. Session DATES ARE: Session # Session #1 Session #2 Session #3 Date Session Starts Sunday, July 5 Wednesday, July 8 Sunday, July 12 Date Session Ends Wednesday, July 8 Saturday, July 11 Wednesday, July 15 Session # Session #4 Session #5 Session #6 Date Session Starts Wednesday, July 15 Sunday, July 19 Wednesday, July 22 Date Session Ends Saturday, July 18 Wednesday, July 22 Saturday, July 25 CONFIRMATION? Confirmation will be sent to all participants when your Patrol registration package, including boys & leaders /parents camp registration forms & payments are received in a Service Center of the Northeast Georgia Council. Boys & leaders/parents will receive a card or confirming the date of their camp. Campsite assignments will be made at check-in. Meal tickets and class location lists will be issued at check-in. Adventure schedules, patches, and t-shirts will be issued at the Leaders meeting; this is usually held on the first night of camp. Maps to camp, suggested equipment lists, and health forms (#ACS ) are in the 2009 Cub Scout Guide to Summer Outdoor Activities booklet mailed to each Scout s home and can be found on the Council web site and in each of the Council Service Centers. 26 RAIN OR SHINE! Scoutland Adventure Camp will be conducted rain or shine. Registration fee is transferable, but not refundable. All requests for transfers must be made in writing to Adventure Camp Director, PO Box 399, Jefferson, GA HEALTH & SAFETY The camp maintains a full-time health facility. Please attach any special physical, medical, or dietary needs to the participant s registration form. Any required medication must be checked in with the Health Office upon arrival to camp. All medications must be in the original container, marked clearly with the patient s name and dosage and be noted on the health form. Everyone attending camp, both youth participants & adult leaders or parents, must bring to camp a completed CUB SCOUT CAMPING Personal Health & Medical Record (#ACS ). Health forms will be collected at check-in on the first day of camp. This form does not have to be completed by a physician. These forms will not be returned to you. Scouts and adults who are participating in the Outback Adventure and have passed the Scout swim test will canoe to the Outback Adventure Patrol site while beginners and non-swimmers will be transported to the patrol site by boat. Requirements to be considered a swimmer can be reviewed in Chapter 14 of the Cub Scout Leader Book #33221D. All Equipment will be transported to the site for you, so you will only be taking minimal gear for this overnight experience. HOW DO I REGISTER MY PATROL? First - at your next patrol meeting, discuss with your Patrol the idea of Adventure Camp. Next - invite all of the parents to a meeting to choose which camp to attend. Decide (if your patrol is Webelos II) - if you will participate in Advancement Adventure or Outback Adventure. If you decide on Advancement Adventure, Choose the eight (8) hours of Adventures your Patrol will participate in. The patrol will register as a group and will attend all Adventures together. Two adults must accompany the Scouts to all of their activities. The only exception is if a parent accompanies his/her son to all of their activities. Have each boy and adult that will be coming to camp, complete a REGISTRATION FORM for ADVENTURE CAMP for WEBELOS Den/Patrol. Collect one from each Scout for mailing. Webelos II patrols do not select Adventures if they plan to participate in the OUTBACK ADVENTURE. OUTBACK ADVENTURE is for Webelos II patrols or Webelos II/Parent teams ONLY. Collect fees from parents. Remember - to be eligible for the early fee, your registration package must arrive in one of the Council Service Centers on or before June 4. Complete the Patrol/Adventure Registration form found on s of the 2009 Cub Scout Guide to Summer Outdoor Activities. (PLEASE transfer all information from the individual registration forms to the Patrol/Adventure Registration form). 27 CAMP PROPERTIES operated by the Northeast Georgia Council The Northeast Georgia Council, Boy Scouts of America operates three camping facilities year round. Camp Rainey Mountain Georgia s Premier Mountain Camp is located in the north Georgia Mountains near Clayton, GA. The camp is surrounded on three sides by the Chattahoochee Forest. Scoutland, a 132-acre facility on beautiful Lake Lanier is operated and maintained by the Council. Camp Rotary encompasses approximately 25 acres on Lake Hartwell in Hart County. Full time Rangers live at Camp Rainey Mountain and Scoutland while a Caretaker lives at Camp Rotary. They attend to the maintenance and development of our properties under the direction of the Council Program Director to assure that strict standards for health, safety and cleanliness are maintained. Fifteen major property improvement projects were completed at Camp Rainey Mountain, Scoutland, and Camp Rotary during Camp Rainey Mountain covers nearly 500 acres and has two waterfront areas, rifle range, archery range, and thirteen program shelters. The Air Conditioned dining hall seats 800. Camping facilities include twenty-two campsites. Accommodations include Adirondack shelters (three sided wooden shelters), tents on platforms, and cabins. The five shower houses are centrally located. These facilities feature hot showers, handicapped access, and separate facilities for youth and male/female adults. In addition, a family camping area is available with pads for 4 camper/rv s with its own shower facility and program shelter. Three townhouse cabins are available for use year round (except during the summer camp season and during certain holidays). The Trading Post (Camp Store) is open during the summer camping season and during event weekends. The camp has a uniquely designed Nature Lodge featuring multiple classrooms for instruction. The property has a special Flag Plaza for memorable ceremonies. The camp has two outdoor chapels suitable for meditation and worship service. Scoutland has eleven campsites with tent platforms. A multi-functional shower house for all ages and genders is available. The camp has a specially designed BB gun/air rifle range as well as a three program shelters. There are three custom docks, one for swimming and two for boating. There is plenty of lake shoreline and a wide variety of motorboats, sailboats, canoes, and rowboats. Cleveland Hall, the air-conditioned dining facility seats approximately 200. Fort Adventure, the Cub Activity Grounds is one of the finest playgrounds anywhere. Council Rock hosts numerous campfires and ceremonies throughout the year. Camp Rotary was built using funds raised by members of the Rotary Club of Hartwell, Georgia. The camp has a floating swimming dock, central shower house, a large program shelter and fifteen separate wooded campsites. Groups gather for campfire programs at Meditation Point. The Northeast Georgia Council operates seven weeks of Boy Scout summer camp at Camp Rainey Mountain. In addition to Boy Scout Summer Camp, outdoor opportunities such as Family Camping Weekend and Fun With Son Weekends are held on camp property. Cub Scout Adventure Camp is held at our Scoutland location near Gainesville. In 2009, the Council will offer 35 Day/Twilight Camp opportunities throughout the 26 counties of the Council. It is the goal of the Northeast Georgia Council to ensure no Scout is denied the opportunity to participate in any Council camp because of financial difficulty. Reservations to use the camp properties can be made by contacting the Camping Department in the Council Service Center located in Jefferson. All Scouters are welcome to reserve any of the properties for activities. There is no charge for the general use of a camp. There may be a small cost for special use of buildings or equipment. The camps have a reservation form (which is available in one of the Council Service Centers or from the Camping Department) detailing the usage costs and general availability of each camp. w w w. n e g a - b s a. o r g 25
