4 SAKO Manual Text 1. When you receive your tent, inspect the box for damage. Do not use a knife or sharp object to open the box. You don t want to slice your new tent! 2. Layout the contents of your shipment and make sure that you received your tent and the following items: stuff sack, replacement bladders each with black fitting, stakes, Silnet, Seamgrip, 2 nozzles, and repair kit. Also confirm that you received any optional items you may have ordered including: Nemoid foot pump, Integrated Pump, t-shirts or accessories. 3. Sako comes with two types of seam sealer. Seam sealing adds strength and waterproofness to the tent and is also useful for making repairs. Use the Silnet for the EPIC and sil-nylon fabric shell of the tent. Use the Seamgrip for the airbeams and tent floor. Allow to dry overnight. Note that both seam sealers can stick to themselves even after curing, so it is best to lightly dust fully cured areas with talcum powder. Please visit for more information. 4. When packing your backpack, keep the denser objects close to your body and near your shoulders. Don t forget to bring your NEMO pumps along! 5. Be alert for signs of changing weather. 6. Try to stick to the trails and avoid stepping in muddy sections to reduce erosion and trail damage. 7. If possible, stop in time to find a campsite away from flooding and other risks. Your Sako single-wall tent comes out of the stuff sack ready for a fast setup. Be careful to keep track of your accessories. 8. Begin the setup of your tent by staking it out. This way you have the option of inflating the tent from the inside. This is a unique advantage of NEMO AirSupported tents! If it s raining, remember to close all zippers, including the Pump Pocket! 9. Be sure the deflation cap is clean and screwed on tightly. Make a quick visual check that the airlines and airbeams are laid out without major twists. 10. Once inside the tent, remove the Integrated Pump from the Pump Pocket and open the outside zipper. Reach through the Pump Pocket to connect the Integrated Pump to the Valve Interface. 11. When properly connected, the CPC quick-disconnect fittings will make an audible click. 12. To use the Integrated Pump, first make sure the valve on top of the pump is closed, then blow into the pump and squeeze it with your hand or under your foot. Repeat this sequence, being sure to frequently inhale! With practice, this becomes quite easy. When learning, be careful not to get light-headed! 13. Sako inflates in 2 minutes with the Integrated Pump. There s no need to rush. With all your gear inside and the doors closed, you will stay nice and dry during the process. 14. There is plenty of room inside Sako s vestibule to store your packs and other gear. Sako is a roomy tent for two people (and a dog!) or a cozy tent for three people. 15. When you are finished, disconnect the pump and open the valve to allow the inside of the pump to dry out. Remember to put the pump back in the Pump Pocket for next time. Also, don t forget to close the Pump Pocket zipper! 16. NEMO AirSupported tents are designed to be very strong between 5 and 7 psi. You have achieved adequate pressure when it becomes difficult to pinch the airbeam together with your fingers. Do not over-inflate! The airbeams are designed to tolerate pressures up to 25 psi in case of expansion of the air inside the beams due to a rise in temperature. If you setup your tent in cold weather and the temperature increases significantly, release some air to keep the pressure between 5 and 7 psi. Failure to do this in the case of extreme temperature changes can cause the airbeams to explode! 17. Sako is a very spacious, sturdy and comfortable tent, even in the worst winds and rain. To make the tent more like home, there is a loop overhead for attaching your headlamp and a flashlight holder along the side next to the airbeam. 18. When closed, the side doors of Sako can also be used as vents. These are either held open with struts or by guying them out. 19. Sako has excellent ventilation, even in a rainstorm. It has 5 integral vents, plus allowing air circulation underneath and through the vestibule. 20. Enjoy the night in your beautiful and very comfortable new tent! 21. After the rain stops, do your best to dry the tent out before packing it up again. This will save weight and reduce the likelihood of mildew. Your NEMO stuff sack also works very well as a hanging drying bag. The dark color of the stuff sack will absorb heat from the sun and the mesh allows the moisture to escape. Always cook away from the tent! 22. A tent that sets up and takes down so quickly gives you extra time to enjoy being outside! 23. To take the tent down, begin by unscrewing the deflation valve. Unscrew the cap slowly to allow the pressure to decrease before the cap is released. 24. Roll the tent along the airbeams to squeeze out all the air. Try to clean as much dirt and debris from your tent as possible before packing it. This will help preserve the breathability of the tent fabrics and reduce overall wear and tear. 25. With your foot on the accessory pocket of the stuff sack, stuff the tent into the large mesh pocket. 4/7

5 26. Roll the stuff sack up and secure it with the compression strap. 27. Being outdoors can really give you peace of mind! 28. Remember to look around and appreciate the little things! Good photos can help you relive the trip over and over again and share it with your friends. 29. Choose your campsite carefully. Avoid areas with uneven ground, under trees or near tall objects which may attract lightning, near open flames or smoldering campfires, or in areas of fragile vegetation. Also consider the direction of the sun and wind. 30. Be sure the deflation cap is clean and screwed on tightly before inflating the tent. Make a quick visual check that the airlines and airbeams are laid out without any major kinks or twists. 31. Connect the pump to the inflation valve on the Valve Interface. If using the Nemoid foot pump, be sure the red intake valve on the pump is open. If using the Integrated Pump, be sure the valve on top of the pump is closed. 32. Step on the Nemoid foot pump to inflate the tent. Allow a short time between steps for the pump to reinflate. Do not use the foot pump on top of sharp objects. Inflating Sako takes as little as 45 seconds with the Nemoid pump. 33. To pack the Nemoid pump, first close the red intake valve and then squeeze the pump. This will squeeze the air out of the pump, making it very compact for carrying. Simply toss the pump into the mesh pocket of the stuff sack with the tent, or into your backpack or pannier. Do not leave the foot pump compressed for more than a few days or it may not return to its original shape. 34. If it s nice out, you might want to roll down the side doors of Sako to get the most ventilation and view of the sky. Use the hook and loop straps to keep the doors from being stepped on. 35. With the doors down, Sako is great for stargazing! 36. The selection of fabrics in Sako not only increases its performance, but also provide a beautiful play of light in the morning sunshine. 37. Congratulations on your first successful expedition as part of NEMO s extended family! Repair Sequence: R1. NEMO AirSupported tents are designed to withstand all the usual rigors of backpacking and camping. We worked hard to select materials with the right balance of being lightweight and durable. If you take reasonable care of your tent, you should never have a problem. But, accidents do happen! If you have a puncture, the next few steps will allow you how to swap in a new bladder and repair the damaged one to keep as a spare. The whole process should only take a few minutes. Please read all the steps first before beginning. R2. Every airbeam has multiple Bladder Access Pockets. Never open the access pockets when the airbeam is inflated! The bladder inside is only meant to be airtight. If it is not supported by the airbeam outer shell it will expand and pop. First disconnect the quick-disconnect fitting on the airbeam and then open the access pockets. R3. If the puncture is close to a Bladder Access Pocket, you can simply patch the bladder with the included Tear-Aid patch kit. Otherwise, simply tie a new bladder to the one inside the airbeam and pull the old one out from the opposite side, dragging the new one into place. It is best to stake down one side of the airbeam or have someone hold it while you pull the bladder through. It is very important to insert the bladder without any twists. It helps to lay the new bladder flat on the ground pointing towards the access pocket with the valve oriented the right direction. R4. Any twists in the bladder will result in obvious un-inflated portions of the airbeam when you re-inflate the airbeam. These will require repeating this entire process, so it is best to take your time and be sure the bladder is fed into the tent with the valve oriented in the right direction and without any twists. Also be sure that the bladder goes all the way to the bottom of the airbeam on both ends. Remember that the bladder requires the airbeam shell to prevent it from expanding and popping! R5. Once the new bladder is in place, secure the Bladder Access Pockets and connect the quick-disconnect fitting. If the bladder is installed correctly, the fitting should be facing towards the round hole. If you need to twist the bladder to insert the fitting through the airbeam shell, you will need to reverse this process and try inserting the bladder again. Remember, no twists! R6. After reconnecting the bladder, inflate the tent and inspect the airbeam. If the bladder is installed properly, the entire airbeam will inflate evenly and firmly from end-to-end. If there are any twists, a section of the airbeam will not inflate and become firm. If this happens, you will need to tie the old bladder onto the new one and reverse and repeat the process. R7. Repairing small holes in a NEMO bladder is simple. If necessary, inflate the bladder underwater to locate the puncture. Once you locate the puncture, make sure the area is dry and clean and cover the hole with a generous piece of the self-adhesive patch included in your repair kit. If the damage is larger than 1/8 in length or diameter, the repair may not be reliable. Replacement bladders are available from your NEMO retailer or from R8. Keep the repaired bladder as a spare in a plastic bag in your stuff sack accessory pocket. It is important to keep the bladder dry and clean so that it is ready for future use. Take care not to damage the CPC quick-disconnect fitting or allow it to get dirty. 5/7

6 Troubleshooting and getting the most from your NEMO tent 1. I want my tent to last forever, what do I need to do? Always take care where you setup your tent. Avoid rough ground, especially rocks and pavement. Before packing the tent, make sure it is clean and dry. Store the tent unpacked to allow air circulation. Occasionally inspect the tent for wear and tear, including all of the CPC quick-disconnect fittings. If you find a damaged o-ring on a fitting, replace it with one from your repair kit. Don t store the tent exposed to UV light. 2. I pumped up the tent and it wouldn t hold air! The most common problem is not having the deflation valve clean and screwed tightly. Make sure the cap is clean, screw it on tightly and listen for any leaks. If the threads or inside rim of the deflation valve have been damaged, a small amount of the silicone grease included in the repair kit should fix the problem. Be aware that the grease attracts dirt! If the problem is not with the deflation valve and you can t locate the leak by listening, than try the following procedure: 1) Disconnect the rear airbeams and inflate the tent. 2) If the tent holds air, one of the rear airbeams must be damaged. If the tent doesn t hold air, one of the front airbeams must be damaged. 3) Disconnect one of the suspect pair of airbeams. If the remaining connected airbeam holds air, you know which one is damaged and vice versa. 4) Replace the damaged bladder with one of your spares. 5) At your first opportunity, submerge the bladder in water to locate the puncture. If possible, fix the puncture with your repair kit and keep it as a spare. It is also possible that your Valve Interface or airlines have been damaged. If the above procedure doesn t help, try disconnecting all airbeams and inflating. The Valve Interface (peanut shaped thing behind the inflation and deflation valves inside the tent) should hold the air pressure. If it does not, inspect it and all the lines carefully and listen for leaks or submerge parts of the airlines in water while inflating. If you can t locate the leak, it may be necessary to send the tent in for repair. 3. I woke up in a puddle! Be sure all the zippers are closed tightly. The most common problem is forgetting to close the Pump Pocket zipper. Have you seam sealed your tent? In all but the most severe storms, the tent will keep the water out without the seam sealer, but seam sealing makes the tent stronger and more watertight. Also check the floor and tent shell for damage. After repeated use, you may need to replenish the Durable Water Repellent finish on the tent fabrics. This is true when water no longer beads-up on the fabrics. DWR is available from most outdoor specialty shops. 4. I pitched my tent on top of a prickly pear cactus! Hopefully you didn t lay down on the cactus too! Carefully remove all of the spines before patching or replacing the bladder(s). If you pack the tent with spines or sharp objects inside, they could damage the remaining airbeams. The good news is that such small holes patch very easily and effectively. Follow the instructions in the repair section above. 5. My tent has a mildew smell. Always pack and store your tent dry! Mildew is not only smelly and bad for the tent materials, it is also unhealthy. Contact Rainy Pass Repair (see below) for advice about safely removing mildew. 6. Does my NEMO warranty cover this? NEMO guarantees every product we sell. We put a great effort into choosing the best materials and providing you with the highest level of workmanship.
