1 IBG 2017 Workcamps in Germany ABOUT IBG IBG is a German non-profit organisation founded in Our aims are to promote international understanding and to facilitate and organise voluntary work while coordinating closely with our local partners. IBG is a registered charity and does not have a political, religious or institutional affiliation. IBG receives funds from the European Union and from the German Ministry for Youth. ABOUT OUR WORKCAMPS Age limit: 18+ years old (Exceptions are mentioned) Camp language: English is the camp language in most IBG camps. It is important that volunteers speak at least Basic English. If the camp language is not English, a special mention is made in the project description. The work: Usually volunteers will work about 30 hours a week (for example six hours a day about five days a week). Exceptions are mentioned in the descriptions and are made according to the needs of the project.

2 Accommodation: Accommodation will be in schools, gyms, youth centres, scouts huts or something similar. In general there are basic conditions but all facilities like kitchen, toilets and showers are available. If not, it is mentioned in the description. Campleaders: Food: Usually our camps have one or two campleaders who will support the organisation of free time activities, keep an account for the money for lodging and excursions as well as provide some support to group processes in the project. Apart from these responsibilities they are volunteers like the others. In most workcamps, preparing meals is self-organised by the participants. Usually everyone will take turns cooking. Contact with the local population: Establishing contact with the local population is one big aim of IBG. Of course the level and intensity of local contact depends entirely on the possibilities and cannot be forced, nevertheless volunteers should be open for contact to the local population. Insurance: All relevant insurance (personal accident, illness, third liability) is provided only within the official camp dates. EU volunteers are not insured against illness, that s why they have to bring the European Health Insurance Card EHIC (former E111). We strongly recommend (non-eu) volunteers who plan to travel beyond these dates to bring their own insurance. More information can be found in our Infosheet. Volunteers with special needs: International workcamps should be open to everyone. If you have volunteers who need individual support to join a workcamp (more information, special support during the camp...) please contact us. We will do our best to find a way to host them. Accessing workcamps: All our workcamps are open and accessible for volunteers with fewer opportunities, according to the special needs and interests of the volunteers. We consider the workcamps marked with an X in the A4A column in the list on the following page especially appropriate for first time experiences in volunteering due to our local partners extensive support, as well as knowledge about integrative lifestyles.

5 Workcamps Help renewing a footpath in Aach so the school kids don t have to walk on the street anymore. IBG 01 Aach (RHINELAND-PALATINATE) RENO 10 VOLS PROJECT: Aach is a small village not far from Trier. For the first time they ask IBG for the help of international volunteers to improve the infrastructure of the village. The village is situated in a deep valley, the different houses climb the up the steep hills. The main task will be a footpath leading from the upper village to the bus stop in the village centre. In the morning school children use the path to reach the school bus. At the moment this path is closed as it is not safe anymore, so the pupils have to walk on the street. WORK: The footpath descends from the upper village to the village centre in the valley. The volunteers will renew this path which is a technical quite demanding task. The work includes paving, stone stair steps, handrails... You will be supervised by a local retired craftsman. Other renovation tasks in the village might be added. Please be aware that the work is physically demanding and the weather conditions can be quite challenging as well. Volunteers with some experience in renovation work are especially welcome. ACCOMMODATION: in a community centre in rooms call "family barn". Usually these rooms are offered to people in the village to celebrate big birthday parties or similar events, or to local initiatives for trainings. There is also a small kitchen and you can use the bathrooms of the sportshall which is in the same building. LOCATION: Aach is a village with approx inhabitants not far from Trier in western Germany near the border to Luxemburg. It offers several pubs but no shops, friendly people and a beautiful landscape. You can go hiking, make barbecues, discover the nature, and have different activities together with locals (they are already very curiously waiting for you). The number of excursions will be very limited due to the poor local transport but for sure you will visit Trier, the oldest German city with many Roman sights (as Porta Nigra), a famous cathedral, many clubs and events... NEXT AIRPORT: LUX or HHN (alternatives: CGN or FRA) NEXT TRAIN STATION: Trier (bus to Aach at 16.30, or on March 18th) MEETING POINT: bus stop in Aach The perfect project for nature lovers: Help redoing the grounds in front of a guest house and get the chance to explore the nature close to Koenigsdorf. IBG 02 Jugendsiedlung Hochland (Bavaria) RENO/CONS 14 vols PROJECT: The Youth Educational Centre Hochland is an association that is located close to the village of Koenigsdorf. In 2017, it invites an international workcamp for the 1st time! The Centre aims to support young people in various ways: They offer trainings and seminars, and their large area includes not only seminar houses, but also a camping site and four log houses. The facility usually hosts school classes, holiday camps or families. WORK: The ground in front of the guest house needs to be re-done: You will help with creating a paved terrace, setting up a wooden separation (that divides the terrace and a near-by path), and planting the area in the end.

6 ACCOMMODATION: You will be accommodated in one of the log cabins; it offers rooms for four people each, a well-equipped kitchen, sanitary facilities, and a community room of 36qm. In front of the building, there is a lot of space to do sports or have a camp fire. LOCATION: The Centre is located amidst nature; it belongs to the village Koenigsdorf, which is, however, about 4-5 km away. Although the area is rural, you will probably be able to do a trip to Munich (50km) and to the famous lake Starnberger See (30km distance). The place itself is great for hiking - it's the perfect project for nature lovers! NEXT AIRPORT: Munich NEXT TRAIN STATION: Wolfratshausen Experience Bavarian culture in the small village of Burk helping the community with various renovation and restoration tasks! IBG 07 Burk (Bavaria) RENO/MANU 10 vols PROJECT: For the fifth time the small community of Burk invites an international workcamp this year! The last camps were a big success, so the community is happy to repeat the international experience. On May 1 st the village will celebrate the installation of the maypole (Maibaum), which is a popular tradition, particularly in Southern Germany. You are of course invited to join the celebration, experience Bavarian culture and meet locals right in the first couple of days of the workcamp. WORK: The workcamp group will have different tasks this year: Volunteers will support the community of Burk with various kinds of renovation and maintenance work. You will help renovate the youth centre, as well as a hiking hut and a BBQ hut in the surrounding area. There will also be some restoration tasks at the local cemetery and green areas around the community. Be spontaneous to help out wherever a helping hand is needed! ACCOMMODATION: The workcamp group will stay at the local primary school s building. Please bring your own sleeping bag! For cooking you can use the kitchen of the fire brigade s house next door. All necessary sanitary facilities are available. LOCATION: Burk is a small village in Bavaria with 1100 inhabitants. It is surrounded by beautiful nature with forests and hills perfect for hiking. There are a couple of nice lakes in the area, too. The cities of Nuremberg or Wuerzburg can be visited on weekend trips. NEXT AIRPORT: Nuremberg NEXT TRAIN STATION: Ansbach MEETING POINT: Train station Ansbach Come to Moenchberg and help the town celebrate the 650 year anniversary of their market rights. IBG 06 Moenchberg (Bavaria) MANU/CULT/FEST 10 vols PROJECT: The market town of Moenchberg is celebrating its 650 year anniversary of its market rights. The town itself is much older. From 19th to 21st of May the official celebrations will take place, including events like a parade, traditional music and exhibitions of historic professions and machinery. It s going to be the first international workcamp in Moenchberg and the citizens are already excited to share their local traditions and history with you. WORK: The volunteers will work closely together with the local volunteers and community workers who are in charge of the celebrations. You will be involved in the preparatory work that needs to be

7 done: preparing the different areas, building infrastructure like stalls and tents as well as the medieval themed decoration of the town. During the festive days you will be involved in the different tasks to ensure a smooth course of events. After the celebration you will help dismantle everything again. ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be accommodated in the local fire department. There is a room for training courses that will serve as your bedroom. Sanitary facilities and a kitchen are also available. Camp beds will be provided. Please bring your own sleeping bag. LOCATION: Moenchberg is located in the Bavarian part of the low mountain range and nature park called Spessart, around 65km south-east of Frankfurt. It is considered a Luftkurort (climatic spa) and a popular touristic place in this region, not least because there are still a lot of medieval buildings and frame houses around as well as the historic city wall. In your free time you can go on trips and maybe take a guided tour at the local brewery, where a special beer for the anniversary is made. You can also relax at the public heated swimming pool with a scenic view. NEXT AIRPORT: Frankfurt (FRA) NEXT TRAIN STATION: Miltenberg (from here you need to take bus line 81) or Obernburg-Elsenfeld (from here you need to take bus line 61). Bus stop: Rathaus, Moenchberg SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers will often work in small teams together with locals, so volunteers who want to improve their German speaking skills are especially welcome. Come to Castle Grimburg, feel like the castle s lord or mistress and help to maintain the complex. IBG 03 Grimburg Castle (Rhineland-Palatinate) RENO 10 vols PROJECT: For the fifth year, a workcamp will take place at the castle Grimburg. Built by the Trier archbishops around 1190, the castle has been destroyed and reconstructed several times. Awakened from its centuries-long sleep in 1978, a local group of volunteers started to reconstruct the castle again, including work on the very impressive castle keep. However, most parts are still a ruin and in the past years, efforts have been made to increase the castle s accessibility and attractiveness of this unique site. Today, it has become a popular destination for hikers, as well as a site used for weddings, youth activities, historic markets and knights festivals. There will be a small castle s festival on May 25th, where you are invited to join and support the local team. WORK: The tasks will be to support the maintenance of the castle and do various works on the castles ground: cut bushes and grass, protect the masonry, maintain the historic mediaeval herb garden and to do some cleaning work in the castle s and witches museum. The work will depend on the weather conditions. Please be aware that the work can be challenging at times and that you will work outside even in bad weather conditions! During the castle s festival you will support the local team. ACCOMMODATION: The group will stay in one of the small towers of the castle you will feel a bit like you are living as former inhabitants of the castle did. The conditions are very basic; you will use the first floor for sleeping and the ground floor for cooking and eating. There is electricity but no heating (but a campfire right in front of the tower). Toilets and a shower are within 100m. Of course, there is also no internet available. Please bring a sleeping bag and a flashlight. LOCATION: The castle Grimburg is overlooking the forests and valleys of the region called Hochwald ( high forest ). The castle is quite isolated; the next village (the name is also Grimburg) is in a 2km distance, the next shops are in Hermeskeil (10km). The castle is surrounded by nature and you will have the chance to enjoy it (just go for a walk...). Nevertheless you will also meet local

8 people and share time with them or take an excursion to Trier, the oldest German city with 100,000 inhabitants. Here you can find many historical sights (from the Roman period), many clubs and events (as it is a university town) and all other facilities. Attention: This project is only for volunteers who like simple life and enjoy the nature! NEXT AIRPORT: Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN), Luxembourg (LUX) Frankfurt (FRA) NEXT TRAIN STATION: Trier or Tuerkismuehle MEETING POINT: Hermeskeil bus stop Help renovate one of our seminar and training locations in Ehningen IBG 05 Ehningen (Baden-Wurttemberg) RENO/CONS 8 vols PROJECT: The local host of this project is a German non-profit association called DJO (Deutsche Jugend in Europa - German Youth in Europe). They provide a self-catering educational centre for school classes, youth groups, musical or churchly associations as well as other NGOs who use the rooms for meetings, festivals or trainings. This house is also one of IBG s favourite places to host trainings or seminars. In past years, the host was able to restore and improve the outside area of the house with the help of international workcamps. This year they are looking forward to welcoming you again to help them make the centre even more beautiful! WORK: This year the workcamp will help with various renovation tasks inside the house such as painting and wallpapering the rooms. If needed, various gardening and reconstruction jobs around the house and small repairs within the building will be needed, too. ACCOMMODATION: Participants will live directly at the project site. The accommodation includes shared rooms with beds: don t bring sleeping bags blankets and sheets will be provided! There are bathrooms as well as a kitchen in which the participants can cook on their own. Within the centre, there are various free-time activities available such as board games, table tennis or badminton and you may also use the fireplace close-by. LOCATION: Ehningen itself is small town with approx inhabitants, located very close to Boeblingen (6 km) and only 20 km south of Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Wurttemberg. There are lots of things to do close-by, e.g. swimming at a large water park or visiting one of the well worth seeing towns in the area such as Boeblingen, Esslingen, Ludwigsburg or Stuttgart. NEXT AIRPORT: Stuttgart NEXT TRAIN STATION: Ehningen Work the green areas surrounding an educational centre, sleep in a tepee and enjoy the great variety of outdoor activities. IBG 04 Kell am See (Rhineland-Palatinate) ENVI/MANU 12 vols PROJECT: Kell am See is a touristic village not far from Trier, the oldest German city. The regional youth department runs an educational centre in this village, which offers different environmental educational activities for youth groups and school classes. Also school classes or youth associations can come here for several days and run their own seminars or trainings. The centre was just renovated and different new outdoor and training facilities were installed. WORK: You will mainly work in the green areas around the centre. You will cut grass and bushes and clean the ground of the centre. But you will also have the opportunity to construct either an insect hotel or a bread-oven. Both will be used for different educational actions with youngsters. ACCOMMODATION: You will stay in several wooden tepees for five persons each. Mats are provided. In the centre you will have your own kitchen and living room and sanitary facilities. For the free time you will find perfect conditions: an indoor climbing wall, billiard, plenty of outdoor facilities (basketball, football, volleyball ). The public swimming pool is just nearby. LOCATION: Kell am See is a village 30 km from Trier in a beautiful landscape. The area is well known for cycling, walking and other ways of outdoor activities. The local holiday resort offers more than 200 holiday bungalows next to a lake (close to the educational centre). But also people from the area come here for cycling (there is a 45 km cycling path on a former railway roadbed) or to spend a nice day outside. The region also offers plenty of historic sites (castles, museums.) and you will do a hiking trip to the Grimburg Castle where you can spend the night. You will also get the opportunity to come in contact with local associations as e.g. the local voluntary fire brigade. But public transport is poor during the weekend, so the number of excursions will be limited. But for sure Trier with the famous Roman sites, with the cathedral and birth place of Karl-Marx can be visited. NEXT AIRPORT: Frankfurt Hahn (HHN), Luxembourg (LUX), Frankfurt (FRA) NEXT TRAIN STATION: Trier, you have to arrive before 7 p.m. in Trier to catch the last bus to the campsite!

10 You think there is nothing better than a good refreshment on a hot summer day? Then come to the Black Forrest and help create a water playground for kids. IBG 08 Grafenhausen (Baden-Wurttemberg) ENVI/CONS 14 vols PROJECT: After last year s successful project, Grafenhausen invites you to an international workcamp for the 2 nd time! It is a village with about 2100 inhabitants in the Black Forest that has a lot to offer: e.g. the very interesting and interactive Black Forest Museum, a pool, and a sculpture park (where the international group of 2015 worked). Grafenhausen is located at about 1000 meter altitude; therefore it might be quite cold in June. WORK: With your help, Grafenhausen is going to create a water playground for kids. Your tasks will include setting up the wooden equipment, build water channels out of wood, and create little creeks with sand and stones. You will work mostly with wood and stone, and your tasks might be exhausting sometimes. ACCOMMODATION: You will be accommodated in a group house where showers and a kitchen are provided. The house is in the middle of the village, so it s close to a supermarket and your work site. LOCATION: Grafenhausen is a very nice village within a beautiful landscape. The surrounding area is perfect for hiking trips: There are lakes close-by and it is not even half an hour by car to the Feldberg (highest German mountain outside of the Alps). Also, the famous beer Tannenzaepfle is brewed in Grafenhausen and you might be able to visit the brewery. Furthermore, there are regularly train connections to Freiburg (quite a big city with lots of students) and Lake Constance. However, the village is in a very rural area. The community will lend you a bus to make shopping and excursions easier, nevertheless, be prepared for two calming weeks in the forest and far away from big city life. NEXT AIRPORT: Stuttgart, Baden-Baden, Zuerich (Switzerland!) NEXT TRAIN STATION: Seebrugg You would like to help build something and you re also interested in festivals? The community of Willstaett needs your help with a great variety of renovation and construction tasks and the Muehlenfestival. IBG 09 Willstaett (Baden-Wurttemberg) RENO/CONS 10 vols PROJECT: The community of Willstaett invites an international workcamp for the 8 th time! They are very happy to be supported by a group of volunteers at different renovation tasks like rebuilding the fence around the local kindergarden called Villa Kunterbunt, the painting of a BBQ hut, helping with the assembly and disassembly of the Muehlenfestival (mills festival) and the maintenance of public green spaces. WORK: You will work together with the people of the Bauhof (builder s yard) and a skilful carpenter. Your working tasks will be very varied. For example painting and screw the pickets together, painting the BBQ hut, caring of the public green spaces and to help with the Muehlenfestival (mill festival), which will take place from 23 rd of June to 25 th of June. The mill was renovated in 2016 and the community wants to celebrate the ending of the building measures. ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be accommodated in a building of the fire brigade with all sanitary facilities provided. Kitchen and camp beds are in place as well. LOCATION: The community of Willstaett contains several villages with, all in all, around inhabitants. It is situated in the beautiful southern part of Germany, close to the border of France. It

11 is characterised by its beautiful architectural style. With its spectacular waterfalls, castle, and nature, there is also plenty to see and discover in the landscape close to the Black Forest. Not only German nearby bigger cities like Freiburg or Karlsruhe are worth seeing, also the French city Strasbourg offers a wide range of cultural events. NEXT AIRPORT: Strasbourg (France), Stuttgart, Karlsruhe Baden-Baden NEXT TRAIN STATION: Appenweier, Kehl TO BE CONFIRMED Would you like to create a forest-kindergarten, a place to educate our next generation in nature? You are experienced in technical/practical work? Then go for this awesome project! IBG 10 Fasanenhof I (Baden-Wurttemberg) CONS 15 vols PROJECT: Fasanenhof is a southern district of Stuttgart; it is on the outskirts, so it offers both nature and city life close-by. Here, a local association is about to build a forest kindergarten an outdoor kindergarten that allows kids to stay in touch with nature. This concept includes an anthroposophical and pedagogical inspiration of education next to more sustainable lifeystle! WORK: You are going to help building this innovative kindergarten! You will build a huge yurt (some kind of a wooden hut) for the kids! It s the idea of a solar powered kindergarten-village with insulated yurts and a modern wood-heating-system, surrounded by a beautiful garden designed with the main principles of permaculture which is the project of the second work camp one week later (Fasanenhof II). The job includes flattening ground, installing fence posts, raking or shoveling grass/earth/stones, cutting wood with a precise measurement with a saw, assembling wooden triangles bases, helping prepare the foundation and support braces for the large yurt platforms, helping assemble the yurt with the manufacturer and so on. You will be instructed by professionals. ACCOMMODATION: You will be accommodated in huge tents together with the other volunteers onsite. There will be a tent with a kitchen and a place for hanging out. If you d like to bring your own tent, just feel free to do it! You can use the sanitary facilities in the neighborhood or a sanitary truck is provided during the time. LOCATION: Fasanenhof is a southern district of Stuttgart, capital of Baden-Wurttemberg. There are living about 6000 habitants in this district and in Stuttgart in total. It is easily reachable by public transports in about minutes from the main train station of Stuttgart as well as from the airport in about 25 minutes by the underground or tram. NEXT TRAIN STATION: Stuttgart NEXT AIRPORT: Stuttgart Do you enjoy music? Are you prepared for unusual working hours? Come and support the local team of volunteers to run the free of charge music festival Waldstock. IBG 11 Pegnitz U&D (Bavaria) FEST 10 vols Basic conditions!!! AGE: years old PROJECT: The local association Waldstock e.v. ( promotes local youth activities in the small town of Pegnitz. The members of this association are very motivated and with a lot of personal involvement they organize projects like concerts, film festivals or soccer cups. For more

12 than 20 years, they have been organizing the Waldstock festival, a so called Umsonst und Draussen - festival ( outside & free of charge ), which has become an important part of the cultural life in the town of Pegnitz and the region. Since 2013 the festival is very successfully supported by international workcamps. WORK: You will help the organisers in all phases of the festival: The main tasks will be, on the first days, setting up the stage and the campground on the site of the festival, as well as the disassembly of the whole structure and surroundings on the last day. While the festival is running, the volunteers should be available to the organisation and will be ask to assist in different areas: bar, stage, organisation, catering etc. You will work closely with the local people from the association! There is a fixed plan for the build-up of the festival, nevertheless the schedule will be adapted to the logistics of the event and you are expected to be patient and work autonomously within this plan. Volunteers should be flexible enough to work long and unusual hours and enjoy music! Speaking or understanding basic German will be a plus! ACCOMMODATION: You will stay at the local brewery! It is a small and very basic accommodation not far from the festival site. The final ceremony afterwards for all the helpers of the festival will also take place there. During the festival food will be provided by the food stands throughout the day. LOCATION: Pegnitz is a small town in Franconia, Bavaria, near Nuremberg. You can find medieval and historic buildings and churches in the centre of the city. The city is known for its beers: it has a long tradition in brewery and the locals are very proud of it. The Bavarian region, in which Pegnitz is located, is called Little Switzerland due to its beautiful surrounding that invites extended adventures and hiking trips in the region. There are all kinds of trails and possibilities to experience the unique nature. The international volunteers will improve the infrastructure of a small village and support the village s festival. IBG 12 Schwarzerden (Saarland) RENO 12 vols PROJECT: Schwarzerden is a small village with 430 inhabitants and already experienced in welcoming international volunteers. After four successful international IBG workcamps they again invite a group of volunteers to support them to improve the local infrastructure and to enrich the village festival on July 8 th to 10 th. WORK: There will be two different tasks for the volunteers: 1. To install a wooden canopy to the local community centre, so people will have a shelter against the rain even outside 2. To improve the surrounding of your accommodation. This will include landscape gardening and renovation work. The group of volunteers will be split up in the two different tasks every day. You might be asked to support the local festival team. ACCOMMODATION: The accommodation provided is the former centre of the sports club of Schwarzerden, one of the smaller villages (500 inhabitants) within the community of Freisen. It is now in public use for bigger events in this village. All necessary facilities are provided but there is no public internet. Attention: This place is quite isolated; the village of Schwarzerden is 1km away. Next to the accommodation you can find the sports ground, you can use it whenever you want. You will

13 have a beautiful view over the valley; you will be surrounded by forests and meadows. Just make a campfire and enjoy nature. After three successful workcamps in this village, the local people are already looking forward to welcoming again young people from all over the world. LOCATION: The workcamp will take place in Schwarzerden, which belongs to the local community of Freisen, together 7 other villages. Freisen is situated in the north of Saarland in a rural area. You can find many interesting places in Freisen: a historical railway, cultural and natural sights, a small zoo, a spa bath (but only few of them in Schwarzerden). The local villagers are already looking forward to getting to know you and to welcoming you at the local village festival. As the public transport system during the weekend is rather poor, the number of excursions will be very limited. The project is perfect for volunteers who enjoy being outside and in nature. Please make sure to arrive in St. Wendel before p.m. to reach the last bus of the day to Schwarzerden. IBG 13 Mariaberg (Baden-Wurttemberg) MANU/ENVI 12 vols PROJECT: Following the success of last years projects, IBG and international volunteers are again invited to come to Gammertingen. An old monastery overlooks the village from atop the surrounding hills and lush forests of the Swabian Albes. Mariaberg, a quarter of Gammertingen, is not only a village, but also a supporting organisation of the Behindertenhilfe, an institution offering homes, workshops, and education (kindergarten and schools) for young people with learning difficulties, disabilities or illnesses. A diverse range of people young and old come together here to live, learn and work. We ask you to come with an open heart and mind, as you will be in close contact with the people when working in Mariaberg! WORK: A farm with cattle, pigs, geese and sheep is located just outside of Mariaberg. This farm, which belongs to the institution, can be reached by foot on a small path through the forest. The institution wants to make the farm more attractive for people to visit and therefore an easier and more exciting access is necessary. An international workcamp in 2015 started this task by setting up a xylophone, benches, a balance pole and other things that make this path attractive for people with and without disabilities. The path is much more in use now and therefore some more places to have a rest or to be attracted are useful. You will set up benches and install tools to train the fitness under the supervision of a professional worker. ACCOMMODATION: Accommodation will be in a gym hall in the centre of Mariaberg close to all needed facilities like showers and toilets. You will certainly have access to the swimming pool of the quarter and have the opportunity to use other facilities. You will not prepare meals for yourself since there is no kitchen close to your accommodation. Hence, you will be served in the local Café and restaurant of the village. LOCATION: Gammertingen is situated 80 km south of Stuttgart, nestled in the Swabian Albes (not Alpes!) a beautiful mountain chain with spectacular nature. Without a doubt, you will find enough to do in Mariaberg itself (swimming pool, barbecue, gym halls, bowling, restaurants and cafés!) but the region also offers its nature, typical Swabian villages and small towns as worthy day-trips. 14 locals are looking forward to the cultural exchange with you and will be happy to organise trips and other activities for you. NEXT AIRPORTS: Stuttgart, Karlsruhe (Baden-Baden) for Ryan Air flights NEXT TRAIN STATION: Gammertingen Work with a Park Ranger in the marshes of the National Nature Park Hunsrueck-Hochwald. IBG 14 National Park Hunsrueck I ENVI 15 vols PROJECT: The National Nature Park Hunsrueck-Hochwald is the newest German National Park to protect the nature. The park was just founded in The landscape is dominated by huge forests, steep hills, small brooks and ponds, rocks and marshes. Only small hamlets interrupt the nature, a perfect region for plenty of different species but also for hiking. Within this National Park you will work under the supervision of a Park Ranger to care for special marshes situated on the slopes of the hill. These marshes were drained with ditches in the last century to use it as forests. With different measures to bring back the special character of this place and keep the water in the marshes. Many different species (especially amphibians and special plants) already returned. This workcamp will continue this mission and will take place in cooperation with the National Nature Park Hunsrueck- Hochwald and the Foundation for Nature and Environment Rhineland-Palatinate. For more information about the National Park please visit: WORK: The main task will be in the marshes: Under the supervision of a Park Ranger you will realise different measures to keep the water in the marshes and to undo the drainage of the area by blocking or filling ditches or by building small wooden barriers. Some other tasks within the National Nature Reserve will be added to make your tasks more diverse. You will be hiking along the Hunsruecksteig trail, check the marking of the trail, and clean it from trash and broken markings. Attention: The work might be physically hard, you will be hiking on some days and you will get wet and muddy for sure! Please bring hiking boots, rubber boots and working clothes. ACCOMMODATION: You will stay in the village community centre of Deuselbach, a small village with 260 inhabitants in the centre of the Nature Park. The centre offers one huge room for sleeping, a living room with bar and a professional kitchen. Camp beds will be provided. There are several showers and space outside to have a rest, make a barbecue or do some sports. The village is quite isolated without any further infrastructure and surrounded by forest and meadows: The next bigger village called Thalfang is about 6 km far. LOCATION: The workcamp will take places in the western part of Rhineland-Palatinate. You will stay close to Thalfang, a village with inhabitants offering everything you need (shops, pubs, swimming pool ). There are also many tourists in the area as it is well known for hiking all over the year and for skiing in winter. The next bigger city is Trier (50 km), the oldest Germany city with many Roman sights, a huge cathedral and plenty of this to do (vineyard, shopping, clubs ). But due to the poor public transport the number of excursions will be very limited. NEAREST AIRPORTS: Frankfurt-Hahn (Ryan Air, Wizz-Air) or Frankfurt NEAREST TRAIN STATION: Trier or Tuerkismuehle, then bus to Hermeskeil. REMARKS: This is a special project for nature lovers and people interested in nature protection work. You will get wet and dirty.

15 The Celts are coming to Nagold! Help with the preparations for the Celtic Festival in Nagold, including music, dance and international food. Also there are some environmental tasks that you can help out with. IBG 15 Nagold (Baden-Wurttemberg) FEST/ENVI 15 vols PROJECT: The youth centre of Nagold is one of the oldest partners of IBG. For the past twenty years, they have been organizing very successful workcamps, inviting volunteers to help them with different renovation tasks and, every second year, organizing a Celtic festival. WORK: This year the workcamp participants will be again helping out at the Celtic Festival in Nagold. Local clubs and associations will be participating in the festival and you will be helping them out with the preparations for music, dance and international food. On other days, you will work on various environmental tasks within the community of Nagold. ACCOMMODATION: The group will be staying in the youth centre. Two sleeping rooms with beds and a large kitchen are provided. Please bring a sleeping bag! Showers are available at the swimming pool nearby. Take a look at the youth centre here: LOCATION: Nagold is situated in the beautiful Black Forest and has about 22,000 inhabitants. The youth centre, located in the inner city of Nagold, is a meeting point for young people aged Beside many other possibilities to spend time in the youth centre you will find rooms and equipment to play music, to dance and make videos and plenty of other things to spend your leisure time. Trips to Stuttgart and Tuebingen, hiking in the Black Forest, horse riding, swimming and playing beach volleyball are only some of the possible activities. Local youth will be around at almost all times, so participants can look forward to getting in touch with them! NEXT AIRPORT: Stuttgart (STR) NEXT TRAIN STATION: Nagold Hoetensleben, a village at the former German-German border, invites you for the 20 th work camp! Help maintain the memorial, and learn about the village s history during the time of the Iron Curtain. IBG 16 Hoetensleben (Saxony-Anhalt) RENO/STUDY 11 vols PROJECT: The village of Hoetensleben was situated directly on the Eastern side of the inner German border that was dividing Germany during the period of the Cold War. From 1952 to 1989, the village was part of an exclusion zone, created by the East German dictatorship all the way along the 1400 km borderline to prevent illegal border crossings. Walls and barbed wire fences, watchtowers, and command posts blocked the view and the streets to the West. Border guards, mines, and spring guns made sure that no one would try to flee East Germany. For the villagers, as for all people living in the 5 km exclusion zone, life was even more restricted than elsewhere in the country. Entering and leaving the zone was only allowed with special permission. Armed forces and state surveillance were ever-present. Still, many people died trying to escape. After the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, the border fortifications were preserved by a local association, called Grenzdenkmalverein (Border Memorial Association). A section of 400 m of the former fortification system can still be visited today. The Border Memorial Hoetensleben depicts life at the former border in East and West Germany, informs about the rigid border regime, and commemorates the victims of the German division. It belongs to the Marienborn Memorial to German Division.

16 WORK: The Border Memorial has landmark status. Working there will include maintenance and clearing of historical structures and areas such as the former dog run, a fenced-in strip near the border, were guard dogs were positioned at frequent intervals to keep a round-the-clock watch. In the course of the workcamp, there will be several study parts, such as a two day History Lab at the Marienborn Memorial to German Division, located on the ground of the formerly most important border crossing between East and West Germany. You will go on excursions to learn more about the period of the German division, contemporary Germany and its people. The highlight of this historical part might be your excursion to Berlin, where you will visit the German Bundestag (German Parliament). ACCOMMODATION: You will stay in the former village hall that is renovated now and gives enough room for everyone. There are different sleeping rooms with beds provided and a good equipped kitchen as well. LOCATION: Hoetensleben is a little village with approx. 2,500 inhabitants. International workcamps have been taking place there for 20 years now, so local inhabitants are looking forward to welcome the volunteers. Many activities will be done together with local associations, e.g. the voluntary fire brigade of Hoetensleben. Since you will be taking part in the 20th Workcamp, there will also be a big party, celebrating the anniversary of work and exchange across borders. Volunteers should be interested in German contemporary history since we will work at and visit historical places and commemoration sites that are related to Germany s history. Therefore, please add a short motivation letter to your application, describing your interest in this special project. Now you ll get the opportunity to help build one! IBG 17 Speinshart (Bavaria) CONS 15 vols PROJECT: The community of Speinshart invites an international workcamp for the first time! It is a village with about 1100 inhabitants in Upper Franconia which is well-known for their big abbey. The local host is looking forward to be supported in building a playground. WORK: You will work together with people of the community (e.g. parents or the local youth). Your working tasks will be varied. To edify a path to the playground, building up different playground equipment and creating a willow pergola. ACCOMMODATION: You will be accommodated in the community center which is situated directly on the working site! The community center offers a big hall where you can sleep, a big room and a well-equipped kitchen. It also offers sanitary facilities and a bowling alley which you can use under survey of the local skittles club. Behind the building there is a lot of space to do sports (a soccer ground and a volleyball field) and the working site. LOCATION: Speinshart belongs to the collectivity of Eschenbach and the area is very rural, but you will probably be able to do a trip to Bayreuth (30km) or Nuremberg (90km). Also you will have contact to the Landjugend (the youth of the community) which have a club room in the community center. The place itself is great for hiking; and you should also visit the abbey, which is now an international meeting place! NEXT AIRPORT: Munich, Nuremberg NEXT TRAIN STATION: Trabitz

17 Come to the Black Forest, live in nature and work for nature! You can enjoy three weeks of landscape protection and hiking paths maintenance in an international team. IBG 18 Lauterbach (Baden-Wurttemberg) ENVI 10 vols PROJECT: This is the 9 th time that the community of Lauterbach invites a workcamp. Above all, the local host is very happy to be supported by a workcamp at different environmental and construction tasks in a nature protection area! WORK: A variety of tasks are waiting for your help. One task will be the maintenance of a hiking trail in the forest. So-called neophytes (invasive non-native vegetation) need to be removed in the nature protection area. You will cut and clear those plants. Furthermore, cleaning and clearing of vegetation needs to be done in biotopes like ponds and tarns. You will, most likely, also repair fences and maintain grasslands around fruit trees. Be prepared for hard physical work! Due to working in damp and steep areas (ponds), rubber boots and/or sturdy shoes are necessary for working effectively! ACCOMMODATION: The workcamp team will stay in a nice community house in the middle of the forest, where you can find sanitary facilities, showers and a good equipped kitchen. There are 4-bedrooms for you. Due to the position of the house in a rural area, it is likely that there will not be access to internet and no coverage for mobile phones. Just be prepared to spend three wonderful, adventurous weeks away from your busy and usual everyday life! LOCATION: Lauterbach is situated in the heart of the Black Forest nature park, close to Schramberg and the town Rottweil. There are many possibilities to hike and experience nature first hand. Just step out the door and find yourself surrounded by beautiful nature! On weekends, you ll have the chance to visit Rottweil or the university town of Freiburg. NEXT AIRPORT: Stuttgart NEXT TRAIN STATION: Hausach It s getting muddy!! The community of Schenkenzell needs your help to clear out a creek so the water can run smoothly again and to restore a refuge and a barbecue area. IBG 19 Schenkenzell (Baden-Wurttemberg) ENVI 15 vols PROJECT: In the middle of the Black Forest you can find a small and pretty community called Schenkenzell, which is about 750 years old and was mainly busy in mining and agriculture business and is known for its monastery and floating tree stems. Today Schenkenzell is more of a residential municipality and a destination for tourists since the region is plastered with hiking trails and a wellknown brewery is to be found in the next town. Even though agriculture and farming has almost died out completely, Schenkenzell is still surrounded by meadows and land. 10 km outside of the community you can find a biotope, formerly used as meadow for the animals. It will be the 4 th time that Schenkenzell invites a workcamp and they are always very happy to welcome the volunteers. WORK: During the workcamp you will participate in two projects. Since the meadows were not used frequently anymore the creek that runs through has totally overgrown. The consequence was that the water couldn t run properly anymore, instead the meadows were transformed into marsh land. Eventually it could not be used at all anymore. One of your workcamp task will be to clear out the creek so that it can run smoothly again. That means you have to dig out soil, clear out plants, thereby protecting this cultured nature. It will be physical work and since the land is quite moist you should bring water proof shoes with you ideally rubber boots!
