Frank Parham (423) fmparham1@gmail.com Once again I want to thank our guest Leroy Matthews for coming from Lilburn, GA to speak at our June meeting. I truly enjoyed Leroy'sinput about the blade show and the knives he displayed and spoke about to our club. The Scagel knives were of particular interest to me. Upcoming Knife Shows Our new activity of raffleing some items brought in by members is going well. It seems that everyone is enjoying this new activity. Please bring something to be raffled at our August meeting. Our next meeting is August 4 th, at 6:00 pm at the Soddy Daisy Communitycenter. We open about 5:00 for time to swap, buy and sell knives. The SDKCA is a good place to find a knife. We still have annual club knives for some members. Most have beenpaid for and are available for pick up at the next club meeting. Remember the Parker show in Sevierville is scheduled for August 26, 27 and 28 th. We look forward to seeing you at our August meeting Thanks to all who help us at the club. 2 Notes From the July Meeting President Frank Parham opened our meeting with the pledge to the American flag Frank and George gave us a up date on the Blade Show that they attended. We have a new member Kevin Henderson We had a guest speaker Leroy Matthews from the Chattahooehee Knife Club Leroy talked about his personal knife collection of folders and fixed blade knives Leroy gave everyone at the meeting a Flicket that you mount on a blade to make it easy to open. Discussed the tactical knives that are made in China. Patent Numbers I recently obtained an Old Cutler Barlow which had the patent number 3,317,996 on the tang of the pen blade. A patent number on any object is useful in dating that object. So, my knife was made after the grant date and cannot be any older than that. The first step in doing this is to open up your Internet browser and go to: When you get there put in the patent number and press the enter key. That will take you to your patent where you will be given the name of the patent owner and the date the patent was granted (plus a lot of other information). In the case of my Barlow the owner is the Colonial Knife Company and the patent was granted in For those of you that do not use the Internet there are charts that have this dating information. You can find these in many reference books and collector guides. One such book is the Official Guide to Collector Knives by C. Houston Price and Mark D. Zalesky. 2

Most of the time this is because of the elaborate etching on the blades, or the fine handle materials, or the familiar name of a great knife company on the razor tang. While you are looking you might begin to wonder if you could use a razor like this. How should I hold it? How should I sharpen it? What razor should I pick? What soap? What brush? are just a few of the questions that might cross your mind. If you are a knife dealer and just happen to have a razor or two in your display case, are you prepared if a customer asks you questions like these? The short book described here has the answers to all of these questions in both words and pictures Best of all it was written by those that had to use these razors on a daily basis and that also had to instruct the generation following them to do the same. No fee or registration is required, but donations are accepted which helps them buy and digitize more books. The book used in the shaving article above is an example of the wide and useful material available. It is also proof that the Internet is a worthwhile tool to have and use. 3

4 Took Elijah on a Trip to the Blade Show... it's been about 8 years since I've been... As Always, I was in Awe of all the knives, the custom guys, etc... My Wish List is getting longer, with Todd Begg and RMJ Tactical, Spartan Harsey at the top...and many others below that... I was however surprised at the amount of "High End" Chinese Knives that were there... Reate & Rike were there as well as a couple more companies that I've not heard of... A Facebook knife buddy I met down there, tried to buy one of these Rike multi-color tactical Kwaiken flippers from a dealer who was asking $300, my buddy offered him $250 and the dealer wouldn't budge...they either have the S35VN or the CTS-204P Blade steel, with the 204P being a little more expensive. This is it here: 1b;searl b;searl We looked at several different styles and Chinese brands...none were real cheap, some were down right expensive. From the one's I played with they are top tier knives as far as quality, I was Impressed. I didn't ever think I'd see a Chinese knife more expensive than say Benchmade or Chris Reeve knives, or anyone in that category as far as quality and price... I was a bit surprised also as I guess I've not kept up on all the custom guys that close as I cant afford them...but Todd Begg's Steelcraft series, is made by his design but manufactured in China by Reate and they sell for around $450, where as Todd's version sell for about $800, the mini bedoga is also made by Reate and designed by Todd and it holds a similar if not more expensive price ($400-$600). I think my preference on the Chinese brands was (From Top to Bottom) #1 Reate #2 Rike #3 #4 Kizer, Not that I don't like Kizer or some of their knives, and they usually have good blade steel, S35VN, but they have a wide range of quality from Cheap to Expensive...and with what I've seen with Reate and Rike they drop a notch or 2. #5 With Real Steel being the more affordable brand... And they're was probably a few more there...but I can only remember so much... Ron Franklin 4
